If you had to lose a stone how would you go about it?

Have a stone I would like to lose. In no particular rush but it just has me feeling gross. I haven’t been on a diet in ages. So much contradictory info. Some say fast - others say this stresses the body. Same with walking but a friend said don’t bother the calories lost is not worth it.

id love any advice as i really dont know which path is best

Give up alcohol if you drink and all snacks
Stick to protein and fruit veg or salad at all meals
Low fat, low carb, low sugar
I don’t enjoy breakfast so have black coffee and some fruit for breakfast
Today I had a prawn salad for lunch and am having a pork chop with carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes and parsnips
If I didn’t enjoy a drink or two and eat out too much I would easily lose weight
I’m trying harder at moment as want to lose a stone by my September holiday

You will easily lose a stone by sept with that diet! 💪

I've been trying for ages. Think the only way I could do it is losing a limb and that seems a tad drastic 😂

Filling meals by Lindsay Wilson. 3 meals a day and a naked bar after dinner. Fruit and veg only for snacks. I have chocolate once a week. I'm losing 1-2lbs a week fairly easily doing this and I'm not starving. Mounjaro didn't work for me I lost weight then put it all back on when I stopped (can't afford maintenance forever). This is much better for me because I am eating healthily and learning to control my eating.

Shodan · 27/06/2026 18:44

Depends how fast you want to lose it.

I lost a stone over four months by upping my walking (brisk walking and for longer), cutting every lunch and dinner by half and filling the empty space with a shit ton of salad, and lapsing quite regularly, because life is too short to go without chocolate/Nandos with the kids/ ice cream or whatever.

Other methods produce faster results but lazy dieting works for me.

I’m a size 10/12. 137 pounds. 5 ft 4. Would love to be a tad leaner.

Honestly unless you are quite young & have a naturally narrow build, a stone under that may be a difficult weight to maintain long term, unless you are happy to make a real lifestyle change and adopt a very disciplined, consistent approach long term.

BleedinglyObvious · 27/06/2026 18:46

Eat much less for a few weeks.

No pharmacist or doctor is going to prescribe mounjaro to someone who is size 10/12 & 137 lbs at 5 ft 4.

ricketybeauty · 27/06/2026 18:52

Going on what you’ve said, you probably COULD lose a stone although it’s sounds like you don’t desperately need to?

Post baby I did weight watchers and at your weight/ height I managed to shift a stone following that plan. I don’t think you’ll get off much more than that though with WW

daisybaby121 · 27/06/2026 18:52

Definitely walking, Pilates and yoga too. I find calorie counting to be too restrictive and it puts pressure on. Food wise I would recommend just avoiding stodgy things. Pasta as a treat, and have it whole meal. Cut the carbs out of dinner and have more veg instead. For example a meat/ fish with broccoli and carrots. Pumpkin or tofu is lovely as a vegetarian option. 0% fat Greek yoghurt with blueberries etc, I use a Keto granola from Holland and Barrett - coconut and nuts. To keep up the fibre I have porridge with flaxseed and chia seeds in for breakfast. If having carbs have them earlier in the day as they provide long term energy and you are more likely to burn some calories off rather than eating carbs at night. For a dessert I will have a tea with a few pieces of dark chocolate or a couple of ginger biscuits . This is how I eat to maintain a lean figure - I soon notice I look ‘puffier’ and hold extra weight even just after a few days of eating more bread and carbs. I hope this helps

Walking at pace and particularly including inclines is the best excercise you can do for all round healthband of course it contributes to weight loss. OK, if you're going to plod along slowly for ten minutes, it won't show on the scales, but if you start there and increase pace and distance it absolutely does.

It did absolutely nothing for me for weight loss. I was walking several km per day at a good pace.

Trotula · 27/06/2026 19:03

I was a shorter, heavier version of you 18 months ago going from a 12 to a 14 and didn’t like what I saw in the mirror or feel at all comfortable in my clothes.

”Diets” as such don’t work for me; the moment I decide to cut back I start buying fatty foods.

So I decided I would go “healthy”.
Is this food nutritious?
No - don’t buy it, don’t eat it.
i just stopped buying anything with empty or low nutrition, crisps, salted nuts, biscuits, cakes, pasta, chips, pastries.
Each day I made a crunchy salad pot and a fruit pot.
Bite size peppers, radish, cu, toms, olives, gherkins, with some protein like Greek style cheese or cheddar cubes and mixed seeds.
Similarly fruit, maybe bite sized apple, strawbs and grapes.
I could eat this throughout the day and didn’t need much more, maybe a banana.
Dinner
Chicken or fish with veg or salad
Veggie curry and rice
Jscket potato with tuna
Veggie options are good for dinner
Yogurt with frozen berries or mango or banana with a little honey, or
Overnight oats with frozen berries

I think walking is beneficial; it’s often peaceful to walk after dinner and initially was really good to stop me raiding the cupboards.
I’ve lost a stone over that period which I’ve maintained and am happy with.

Worth checking your TDEE as assumptions are that we need 2000cals a day but that’s not accurate.
you can check yours here, I’ve guesstimated you are 43 taking little exercise and it calculates you need app 1800 cals to maintain current weight, so you need to reduced to app1300 per day to lose a pound a week.

I did lose a stone. Without really trying to be honest. I stopped drinking alcohol. I started to train to walk a Camino, so I was doing maybe 2 long 8-12 mile hilly walks a week. I naturally just ate healthier because of the no drinking and the being more active and having better mental health. I’ve never been on a diet personally, but the weight just came off. This was 3+ years ago and I am still about 12kg lighter than I was back then.

Jimmyjimmy123 · 27/06/2026 19:10

@ToffeeCrabApple 😂you don't need a pharmacist

No pharmacist or doctor is going to prescribe mounjaro to someone who is size 10/12 & 137 lbs at 5 ft 4.

That’s not entirely true. If youve already held a prescription a lot of providers happily prescribe to those with BMIs of 20 and above. You can legitimately obtain a new prescription at a BMI of 25 now.

Flailingaroundatlife · 27/06/2026 19:28

Listen to the Zoe Health and Nutrition podcast. It'll change your life!

Zanatdy · 27/06/2026 19:29

Calorie counting and increase activity. Lost 24lbs doing this.

Minasama · 27/06/2026 19:32

The eating less path is best. Get a smaller plate and cut out processed foods/ snacks between meals.
Add in a 30 min walk per day but don’t listen to anyone who tells you you can exercise your way into weight loss. You have to do such a lot of exercise to burn off a biscuit, it is much easier not to eat the biscuit (assuming no eating disorder.)

RaraRachael · 27/06/2026 18:53

It did absolutely nothing for me for weight loss. I was walking several km per day at a good pace.

Then you were eating the calories back that you burnt.

managingexpectations · 27/06/2026 19:33

Me personally I’d cut out fizzy juice and eat smaller portions making sure I was having well balanced protein rich meals. And no snacking, that’s my downfall!
I hate “dieting” and I know what I should be doing I just choose not to. If I wanted fast results I’d calorie count.
exercise I’d walk more and add in 1-2 weight based sessions a week
a stone off is doable in a couple of months just by making better choices and eating a little bit less.

Minasama · 27/06/2026 19:35

darksideofthetoon · 27/06/2026 17:04

Depends what your baseline is. If you’re 10 stone overweight then 1 stone can easily be achieved by some calorie restriction and a bit of activity. Could be as simple as cutting out a daily sugary coffee for some.

But if you’re in very good shape and looking to lean down to bikini show shape then that’s a different matter and requires a different approach.

I weight about a stone more than I did at 18 and look slim (size 8.) If I cut out treats and processed food and make sure to do a walk every day I can easily lose a few pounds. Not sure the approach is that different depending on baseline?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/06/2026 19:35

If it is the last stone and you’re looking for a reshape then you can start exercising, running, lifting a few weights, or if it sounds intensive, chair Pilates is easy to do.

Mounjaro. I would just Lie like all the others.

That's probably the only way I could do it too. I've been a stone overweight for 30 years. Once or twice I've managed to lose half a stone then I slowly put it back on. I've accepted it now. I just make sure I dont get any heavier.
I would be tempted to try the Wegovy pills though, if they didn't cost so much.
