If you had to lose a stone how would you go about it?

Have a stone I would like to lose. In no particular rush but it just has me feeling gross. I haven’t been on a diet in ages. So much contradictory info. Some say fast - others say this stresses the body. Same with walking but a friend said don’t bother the calories lost is not worth it.

id love any advice as i really dont know which path is best

@Pansykavalier yeah I can see your point, but if you change your habits, it's really a no brainer, plus it's so cheap you can stay on a small dose anyway I do.

Cut down on bread, sugar and portion size. I lost weight by having crackers and a piece of fruit for breakfast and making a (massive!) salad of some sort for lunch most days, then a normal meal in the evening, such as fish, a few new potatoes and lots of veg. Hardly ever have sandwiches, cake or pudding, now. I’m not good at eliminating anything completely, but I was ruthless about cutting down - e.g. a tiny piece of a pudding or 1 choc, if a box was handed round. Snacking is my downfall, so I substituted snacks which were either low cal or healthier (Proper popcorn, apple slices with peanut butter, a handful of nuts and raisins, a rich tea finger instead of choc hobnobs!) Am strict about buying stuff with no added sugar where possible (not where artificial sweeteners have been added), such as Dalfour jam. Lost 2 stone over 18 months and have kept it off.

Cut all sugars - that means carbs too and any drinks with calories except the odd glass of wine. Protein, green veg, beans. I lost 7kg in three months which is a bit over 1st. Didn’t count calories.

3luckystars · 27/06/2026 20:52

I would walk an hour every day, eat an apple every day and drink loads of water every day.

( I need to follow my own advice )

Different things work for different people.

Then you were eating the calories back that you burnt.

No I wasn't

I lost a stone by just cutting out sugar and low carbs (no crisps or anything like that). Basically I snacked on nuts and a little bit of fruit, such as apples, blueberries. I'm still no sugar, low carb and started exersicing again and easy to maintain the weight. Also I'm in my late 40s.

So intermittent fasting isn’t too stressful for female bodies?

I’m open to absolutely anything. Just don’t fancy meditation (possible side effects). Looking into MCT oil never heard of it

MCT oil with your coffee, it shuts down your hunger, admittedly I do jab as well but I have friends who say MCT on its own is enough

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/06/2026 21:19

I lost loads of weight through walking and slimming world. Unfortunately I put two thirds back on and am struggling to lose it again

babyproblems · 27/06/2026 21:38

Drink an insane amount of water. No other drinks other than tea / coffee.
Exercise - weights & cardio.
Eat as little as you can and as much protein as you can.

It’s very Hard work!!! And miserable work too.

Depends what your baseline is. If you’re 10 stone overweight then 1 stone can easily be achieved by some calorie restriction and a bit of activity. Could be as simple as cutting out a daily sugary coffee for some.

But if you’re in very good shape and looking to lean down to bikini show shape then that’s a different matter and requires a different approach.

I am in this camp I have a BMI of 22 to get down to a BMI of 20 I would need to eat 1,000 calories a day for a least a month maybe 2. No alcohol, no cheese, no puddings.

HeyThereDelila · 27/06/2026 21:43

I would walk briskly for 30 minutes every day.

Worked for me.

Or train and do martial arts etc, every day, as well as a high step count.

lovecotswoldsliving · 27/06/2026 21:47

If I need to lose a stone, I eat a small breakfast and lunch, then nothing else. It’s tough, but you soon get into the swing of it.

Charlize43 · 27/06/2026 21:54

I cut out carbs for 4 weeks, only eating meat, plenty of vegetables (omitting potatoes) & fruit and the weight just dropped off me.

It also helps if you work on reducing your portion size and I would walk lots.

There isn't much to losing weight; eat less and move more and it drops off.

It's also nice just doing it for 4 weeks as it doesn't feel like a bore.

Intermittent fasting. I had never dieted in my life and it worked a treat, for me.

oliviaAustin · 27/06/2026 22:02

Cut calories to 500 a day below my TDEE. 20-30 minutes on a stationary bike every day. It’ll drop off.

SquirrelGG · 27/06/2026 22:03

I have lost a stone fairly recently. All I did was eat less, eat better, and mainly cut out snacking on chocolate etc. I already walk a lot but did a bit more of that as well. I can't be faffed with calorie counting, never done it, never will.

SquirrelGG · 27/06/2026 22:05

Forgot to say, I'm in my late 60s but this is how I have always lost weight.

SunnyRedSnail · 27/06/2026 22:06

@Graee I have 3 kg to lose.

I am 1kg down so far in 2 weeks.

I am NOT willing to compromise on food as I don't do diets so I'm just doing a brisk 3km to 5km walk every day whilst listening to some good tunes! Im trying to hit 15k steps a say, or 10k at the very least.

So far so good although it has been tough in the heat.

Exercise doesn’t need to be miserable! For many years now I have been doing Caroline Girvan for weight training and Growingannanas for cardio/HIIT. I enjoy both tremendously, especially since I listen to the radio while doing it. (Neither Caroline nor Anna talk, which is how I like it.) Heather Robertson is another excellent online trainer - her workouts are more Pilates based.

For those struggling to cut out sugar I would recommend Dr. Becky Gillaspy’s short talks. Also on YouTube.

Mounjaro. I would just Lie like all the others.

Really? I need to lose a stone, I assumed I couldn’t use MJ!

LorenzoCalzone · 27/06/2026 22:11

I'm in this position. 5'7 a weigh 11st7 or 11st11 depending on the day of the week. After years of calories counting, couch to 5 k and gym weights I've ordered wegovy. I'm going to start it after my holiday. Cost £70 for a month. I hope it works cos I cant fasten half of my trousers and feel awful.
