If you had to lose a stone how would you go about it?

Have a stone I would like to lose. In no particular rush but it just has me feeling gross. I haven’t been on a diet in ages. So much contradictory info. Some say fast - others say this stresses the body. Same with walking but a friend said don’t bother the calories lost is not worth it.

id love any advice as i really dont know which path is best

But carbs are converted into glucose/sugar and the end result is the same. Why do you think diabetics have to strictly control their intake of carbohydrates…

ETA: There are many food groups apart from bread and pasta that I find way more tasty. Give me some chicken and salad any day. Clearly you feel different, and that’s fine.

Edited

What’s that got to do with the price of fish. You said you prefer savoury. It’s about balance. You can be slim, healthy, not diabetic and still eat a balanced diet that includes carbs. I hate this rhetoric that you can only be slim if you cut out an entire food group, particularly one as wonderful as carbs.

Whataflippincircus · 27/06/2026 23:58

My go to diet plan is to cut right back on carbs and increase my protein. I eat a lot of fish, chicken and eggs.

Some people find protein plus vegetables/fibre both tastier and more filling.

Overconsumption of carbs and sugar is responsible for the type 2 diabetes epidemic.

Yep for dinner today I had bacon and feta salad
-3 slices of back bacon
-20g of feta cheese
-2 handfuls of iceberg lettuce
-a handful of spinach
-a small handful of red onion
-a small handful of cucumber
-8 black olives
-a tbsp of balsamic vinegar
-parsley, mint and coriander finely chopped

it was absolutely delicious 🤤 much better than bread or cake!

it probably had 10-13g of carbs.

I eat carbs. Mostly in the form of vegetables, but I do consume some bread (especially low-carb wraps) and occasionally wholewheat pasta. So I’m not cutting out an entire food group. I’m simply conscious of the effect of REFINED carbs on glucose levels and the resulting insulin spikes, and therefore limit them.

Great advice here !

To do that all I need to do is cut out sugar, switch to skimmed milk, just eat 3 meals a day. No snacks, choc, crisps or biscuits in between or in the evening. No calorie counting. No exercise. I can loose a 1 - 2 lb a week.

This.

Atleastitsnotsunstroke · 28/06/2026 04:11

Double dose of food poisoning. I'm half way there.

LolalaBouche · 28/06/2026 07:26

Intermittent fasting. Eat within an 8 hour window, consistently. Occasionally all day fasts. Prioritise protein at every meal, but no food off limits. I’ve lost almost 3 stone doing this. Also cut back a bit on UPF’s (although I do love the odd bag of crisps).

Following as in the same boat

Mounjaro. I would just Lie like all the others.

I told everyone I was on it. I didnt get any negative comments. I wouldnt take it for a stone though. I lost 6 stone on it.
In previous years Ive used slimfast on 2 shakes and one bar a day. No alcohol, no additional milk. 600 calories a day.
You'll lose that stone in a month.

So there was absolutely no reason to come at me then was there? You effectively agree with me, balance.

Catdoorman · 28/06/2026 09:36

I am currently losing weight consistently by eating more protein, which really helps fill me up, and stops me craving cake and chocolate, I used a calorie calculator to work out exactly how many calories I need to lose weight, getting a grip on portion control was a major breakthrough for me, and also exercise, I started out doing 5 minutes on my cross trainer, I've built up to twenty minutes every morning now, and it feels great. I've started doing fifteen minutes in the evenings because I'm feeling so good about it. I've lost nine pounds in eight weeks, I want to incorporate some yoga soon, to improve my muscle tone and balance.

0livetree · 28/06/2026 09:37

Throw it on the beach and it will be lost amongst the other pebbles

Ponoka7 · 28/06/2026 10:13

Jimmyjimmy123 · 27/06/2026 22:13

@Ponoka7 or jab?

Without change, which will get the results anyway, as soon as she comes off the jabs, she'll put more weight on, than she's lost and she'll start to look rubbish. The muscle loss is dangerous. It doesn't make sense to think that you can use the jabs like this. What you are doing is Yo-Yo dieting, which we know is harmful, within the side effects of the jabs. They were created to get obese people's weight down quickly, so they could add in exercise. Just like the, fast 800/milkshake/phentermine, they aren't a get out of eating well and moving enough.

ThatHappyBlueCritic · 28/06/2026 10:21

High protein so eggs at breakfast (extra egg whites too), chicken or other lean protein at lunch and dinner and weigh out your carbs so you aren’t over eating. Weight training is the best but sometimes weight loss is slower as muscle is heavier but your clothes will fit better as you will be slimming. Cut out unnecessary calories in drinks and focus on water.

Can I ask why you cut sweetener? I live off sweetener - have it on iced coffee, Greek yoghurt etc. It doesn’t seem to have any negative side effects

So my blood sugar went into the prediabetic range (just about) and I had a consultant tell me to cut out all forms of sugar including juice, but I could have as much fruit as I wanted. That's just how I interpreted it and I also read some things about some sweeteners not being great for your health, so stuck to fruit. Wasn't a great time! I'm not saying they have bad effects but it wasn't worth it to me / I didn't feel like I had the time to properly research them

Lyra25 · 28/06/2026 18:12

I had to lose a stone last year, I used My fitness Pal calorie counter and exercise. I started by slowly reducing what I ate a day and went for more of a deficit when I felt like it, losing on average a lb a week. I kept it off.

Pansykavalier · 28/06/2026 20:09

If you are interested in finding out more about how sugar affects our metabolism, @beeble347 I would highly recommend Dr Mark Hyman’s The Blood Sugar Solution. He not only explains the physiology of glucose metabolism in layman’s terms, but also shows how the food industry has managed to hide sugar in so many processed and ultra-processed foods.

Sugar, in all its many forms, makes (crap) foods more palatable and thus more addictive. For the same reason, substituting artificial sweeteners has the same effect - plus it allows manufacturers to plaster ‘low sugar’ on their ultra-processed garbage masquerading as food.

I know from personal experience that getting used to non-sweetened foods reduces cravings for all kinds of refined carbohydrates, not just UPFs.

I weight about a stone more than I did at 18 and look slim (size 8.) If I cut out treats and processed food and make sure to do a walk every day I can easily lose a few pounds. Not sure the approach is that different depending on baseline?

How old are you ?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 28/06/2026 23:51

Walking everywhere, weights, no or very few liquid calories in drinks , cut out as much booze as possible, then put everything I ate into my fitness pal to count calories. As much protein and fiber as possible. No take aways.

Shinyhappyapple · 29/06/2026 10:24

EconomyClassRockstar · 27/06/2026 22:14

There is walking and there is walking. I do a 3 mile walk at a 13-14 mins per mile pace every single day and it's been game changing for losing perimenopausal weight. Never take the dog. His walks are his walks and we go at his pace and my walk is my walk, just for me.

Yes, good point. I tell myself I’ve been for a 45 mins walk every day but I’ve only gone a mile in that time, if that. Two steps forward, one step back and stand whilst he sniffs a wall for a few mins. It works in a mental health, get me out of the house way, and is better than sitting in a chair but it’s hardly exercise!

Sartre · 29/06/2026 10:27

Recently lost a stone in a month. I wasn’t overweight but I didn’t feel confident in myself and I’d gained it because I was drinking too much wine basically. Totally cut the wine out, started tracking calories on my fitness pal and I already work out 6 days a week (alternate between strength days and running with one long run a week and 2 shorter 6kms). I did the 5:2 as well so 2 days I’d have 500 cals and 5 days around 1300-1400. The weight flew off.

Sartre · 29/06/2026 10:28

Oh and as an FYI walking is great for general health and fitness but unless you’re putting in 20k+ steps a day (as I do some days tbh) then it won’t lead to weight loss. It isn’t intense enough.

EllaPaella · 29/06/2026 10:44

Calorie count and increase exercise- log onto my fitness pal for a while.
