AIBU to think neighbours should not be naked in their garden?

For context: Our house is on a new build estate and the houses are pretty close together. It’s fairly easy to see into neighbours gardens because the trees etc are not well established yet.

AIBU to say my neighbours shouldn’t be naked in their garden. They are often out in the garden totally naked taking photos of themselves. They have parties quite often and it’s not uncommon for them and friends to be out in the garden naked / using the hot tub etc.

Am I being a killjoy ? Seems excessive to me.

Well I would not be naked in our garden as yes some neighbours from upstairs windows overlook us. Having said that though I would not make a thing of it as it is hot and you have the option of not looking through the windows. If you live on a new build estate you will be overlooked.

Cavorting?

The police don’t turn up for serious events, so good luck!

Well for some people public decency is a serious matter.
If OP and her neighbours, quite rightly, arent happy about what's going on then they should report it . And report it every time it happens. That's often the way to get the police to actualy do something.

JulietteHasAGun · 25/06/2026 20:57

I used to work with a guy who was prosecuted and found guilty of indecent exposure for being naked in his own living room. This was 30 years ago, not sure if it would still be a crime. According to the witnesses he was naked in his large window. He claims his dressing gown came accidentally undone while stood there.

I am sometimes naked in my garden but I’m not overlooked.

SevenYellowHammers · 25/06/2026 20:57

No! You don’t want to see that!

TheWonderhorse · 25/06/2026 20:58

Wouldn't bother me. I think it would be the source of many brilliant family jokes. It's some genitals, and they're not being creepy or sexual about it so don't worry.

The MN cool girls arrived early to the thread.

I think some of the "cool girls" are men having a good old wank about tbh.

out in the garden naked?
are you sure he is not encouraging you to do the fence up?

😂

Dutchhouse14 · 25/06/2026 20:58

I think you are getting a hard time on here OP.
I wouldn't particularly want to see my neighbours and their friends naked in the garden either.
You should be able to look out your window without seeing that imo.
Naked sunbathing is fine if youre not overlooked but they must know they are highly visible from neighbouring houses and if they are taking photos of each other , inviting friends round to get naked etc then I think they are probably exhibitionists and getting off on it. It's probably not just about body confidence.
I wouldn't particularly like it either, but if I was an 11 year old I think id find it hilarious and be inviting my friends round to gawp!

Surely it depends how fit the neighbours are? 🤷‍♀️🤣

ProudPearl · 25/06/2026 20:59

Mumsnet is completely crackers!

I don't know anyone in real life who wouldn't be a bit surprised to spot someone completely starkers in their garden!

Topless sunbathing, ok, not unheard of...but naked gardening? Let alone naked balloon cavorting!

I mean, I don't think they're really committing a crime, and each to their own, but they're definitely bonkers.

Rubyslipperswitch · 25/06/2026 21:00

It would be OK if they had trees/hedges that kept their garden private but I don't think it is acceptable to do it when their neighbour can so easily see everything.

As for naked parties that is just bizarre.

Many of the people commenting here who are trying to be 'cool' and pretend you are being unreasonable would change their tune really quickly if their own neighbours did this especially if they have kids.

You be shocked to know there is actually a naked gardening day!! I do avoid the allotment on those days as I don’t need to see so much dangling dong in one day 😅🤣🤣

sweatymessi · 25/06/2026 21:02

i love that looking out your windows is another thing for the MNs bingo card!

Muffsies · 25/06/2026 21:02

Theraininspainishere · 25/06/2026 20:55

@Beachbeachbaby its not illegal to walk down the street naked.
It’s illegal to behave sexually in public and to intentionally cause alarm.
But simple nudity is not illegal anywhere in the UK

Yes, i'm sure that the neighbours are aware of this, they seem very sure of themselves. They wouldn't be doing this if they thought they could get in serious trouble.

AnonymityAnonymity · 25/06/2026 21:03

Beachbeachbaby · 25/06/2026 20:53

Wouldn’t bother me. We see semi naked people all the time at the beach. It’s only one step up. My kids see us naked, we want to normalise human bodies

I know that British Society has gone down hill big style in the last few years and there is very little left in the way of public decency and civilised behaviour but I really didnt think we had got to the stage where people think it's nornal to go round naked.

You might want to live in a world where anything and everything goes , with no boundaries. I certainly don't.

AgnesMcDoo · 25/06/2026 21:03

It’s a bit inconsiderate tbh

babypickles · 25/06/2026 20:10

My son saw them out of his bedroom window.

Our house looks directly over their garden.

Why does that matter? Surely your son has seen you and your partner naked?

Hang on- if someone stood at their window naked, they’d get into trouble for exposing themselves- how is this different??

Totally agree! Does this not count as indecent exposure?

Booboobagins · 25/06/2026 21:06

They're naturist. I wouldn't be one but each to their own as long as children aren't exposed to it...

LaurieFairyCake · 25/06/2026 21:06

I don’t mind naturists, I would just avoid those areas

Being forced to see cock is assault and I’m not using that word lightly. I do not want to see random men’s cock. It is being forced upon me.

”LOOK AWAY” ? Too fucking late I’ve already seen it.

sure it’s about intent but I don’t give a fuck, I don’t want to be flashed, I don’t want to be imposed up. I don’t want to live in a world where random cock pops up and I feel discomfort.

fuck that shit.

For someone to be naked in their own garden? Yeah righto! They’ll be sending the best officers they have!

My teen doesn’t like seeing me naked 🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s the solution then?

My children have never seen me completely naked and I don't want them to - it's not a pretty sight.
So no - I don't want to see others - most of the ones that do it are not exactly pleasant to see. And no I don't want to be constantly remembering not to look in a certain direction.
