To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

How do you think the NHS is faring in a heatwave?

The MRI scanners at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital have stopped working Cant be fixed till after the heatwave but hey if its only a few days that wont matter right?

264 appointments cancelled.

Well that’s not good but equally there is no weather ombudsman you can complain to?

And the answers some people on this thread give to this is to shrug and complain that the economy isn't productive enough..As if having commerce, health and transport shutting down doesn't damage productivity!

What do you think other countries which have a bit of hot whether now and again do? They just "get on with it" - something you seem incapable of understanding. The whole world doesn't stop for a few days of hot weather.

Is this a joke question?

Examples of things other hotter countries do/have:

Buildings built to stay cool
Widespread air conditioning
Siestas
Bodies that have acclimatised over time
Different work patterns

We 'get on with it' because we have cooling systems installed, offices have cooling systems, we're ready for it. If your cooling isn't up to it, you can go to a mall for a reprieve (they're air conditioned) or go to a movie (always cool). But don't leave pets at home in the heat. Please watch the pets and cool them as you need to.

I agree, but the UK is going to have to adapt and do things to make life easier. We have air con here in most businesses, but not everyone has it at home. When I was young nowhere had it, we have adapted and changed to make things better. Brits just moan and expect "the government" to do something!

At no point did I compare those two things. I gave an example of something which at the time was ambitious and difficult and yet was achieved. I made no comparison to the present day NHS, benefits system, or pension. As I said to PP, if you have to put words in my mouth then you clearly don't have a very good point yourself.

Op, your posts are a joke, and now just consist of you attacking people who ask you to account for your grandiose ideas with even a tiny bit of economics.

I’ll ask again, what is your ambitious contribution to society?

I've never been to Dubai. Last hol was 2014 to Cornwall. I drive a tiny 'city' car and do less than 4000 miles per year. Not sure what that has got to do with anything. I'm childfree as well.

Confused as to your comment re Social housing. Do private houses not get hot then?

Also nobody said you had to live to my standards. If you don't want to buy an air conditioner then don't

Private HOUSES arent forced to have window restrictors and fire doors like flats are Something wrong with your comprehension

I'll ask again, do you know how AI works yet, from where you get your terrible "opinions" on economics?

Absolutely fucking right You cant compare them We didnt have ridiculous health and safety rules in 76 that turned flats into sweat boxes like window restrictors and fire doors No gaps allowed No ventilation.

If you don't like your taxpayer subsidised social housing you could always pay for your own private house. Then you can have all the gaps you like. Really! My windows are old and knackered and really draughty in the winter.

Is suggesting having a legal maximum working temperature a 'grandiose' idea?

THEY STOPPED WORKING DUE TO THE HEAT machines like MRIs arent immune to a heatwave

I wasn't referring to countries which consistently have hot weather - if you bothered to slow down and read you would have got the "other countries which have a bit of hot whether now and again" part. There is a huge difference between hot countries and countries which have a few hot days each summer. I live in one of the latter, our buildings are not built to stay cool, we don't have siestas, we do have more air con now - but that's because we didn't just sit around and moan - and we don't have different work patterns. You do not live in a hot country, so yes, you need to learn to adapt and get on with it.

IBS isn't the same as something like IBD. IBD can absolutely be a disability for those severely affected.

You have made exactly my point!!

People say 'stop moaning just get on with it and muddle through'

But your country didn't just get on with it, you made a change by making air conditioning more widespread! Why are you arguing with me??

I think I've had enough MN for today 😅

Energy is not problematic.

Fossil fuel energy is problematic.

As the nation gets hotter we will need more AC to be climate resilient. (We may need less heating.)

We need to power it with sustainable energy.

Which is pretty much what I was saying…..

Stuff and nonsense!.

In the good old days the machines worked through the heatwaves. Not like the woke machines of today. And they'll no doubt be claiming benefits. Not like in 1976 when letting more babies die was apparently a good thing...

So you are in social housing, claiming lots of benefits but your contribution is that you haven't popped out seven kids. Oh well. I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies. Thanks for your contribution to the UK economy

Who would this apply to? Nurses? Doctors? Undertakers? Bin men? Which services would you grind to a halt to impose it?

That's the point though, isn't it? If you're going to have more heat, you will also have to adapt by making changes. 'Get on with it' might also mean think about what you can do to adapt and start working on that.
