To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

Who would this apply to? Nurses? Doctors? Undertakers? Bin men? Which services would you grind to a halt to impose it?

A lot of those people work indoors, so not a problem. Bin men, yes, an issue. Here in Australia some activities do 'heat out'. Usually at about 35, depending.

Why would services grind to a halt?

There's a maximum legal working temperature in Spain, we can do that too

I dont get any benefits for it They dont know whats causing it Just that the heat exacerbates it. i was offered Colonoscopy last year but refused as my wonderful taxpayer subsidised social housing only has a 1980s bath with two taps instead of a shower. But if ppl like you with the attitude you show want proof im happy to provide it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, but the UK is going to have to adapt and do things to make life easier. We have air con here in most businesses, but not everyone has it at home. When I was young nowhere had it, we have adapted and changed to make things better. Brits just moan and expect "the government" to do something!

wait till the IMF are here slashing all their benefits. They will be wailing that nobody warned them the UK was in trouble.

you live in social housing, are disabled but don't get benefits? I think you need to start your own thread.

So you are in social housing, claiming lots of benefits but your contribution is that you haven't popped out seven kids. Oh well. I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies. Thanks for your contribution to the UK economy

Have you ever done continuous manual work in 30 degree heat? 35 degree? 40 degrees?

Do you understand why 37.5 degree heat is a tipping point in regulating body temperature? Do you understand the symptoms and dangers of heat exhaustion and heatstroke?

Do you understand employer duty of care?

Once more, do you have the first idea of what you are talking about?

Good idea. If you start drinking now it might not hurt so much.

Imagine mentioning the UK's financial problems and the IMF. So sorry. I thought they were kind of important but I can see you are right. They are not worth mentioning.

Anyway my dog doesn't like the way his ribeye was cooked tonight so I've got bigger problems.

if your DH is 76 that ships probably sailed for you. Just as well given how hot your flat is.

Imagine writing, in all seriousness:

Now we keep pre term babies alive much earlier and whilst on the surface this seems like a good thing might be contributing to the huge number of additional needs/disabled kids we now seem to have. So more costs for hospitals, more costs for schools.

On the one hand, fewer dead babies. On the other, more costs for schools.

Sure, fewer dead babies seems like a good thing on the surface...

I see both sides - on one hand, many people have become total snowflakes and refuse to deal with challenging situations, they just wimp out. On the other hand, heat stroke is real, it is a biological response to extreme heat, no amount of “just get on with it” or British stiff upper lip will override that biological response.

Yet we are endlessly told people out of work having children is noble as they’re producing future taxpayers 😬

"Endlessly told" who by? 😂 I think it's pretty well documented that people hate mums on benefits

I think people were more embarrassed to be seen as a ‘fuss’. Whereas now you can’t move for people demanding you hear their truth etc - nobody cares!

My dad told me he had prostate cancer in May two years ago. Described it as a little bit of cancer. That summer when i pointed out he was losing weight he said "i dont eat much in the summer you know that" He made it sound like they had caught it early and that he would be ok. By the time he died in the October it had spread to his spine. I wish he had been more vocal at the start. He was Silent Generation Born in 1936

Makes me think of the early episodes of Call the Midwife where elderly and sick people were living in absolute filth and squalor and wouldn't ask for or accept help, because they didn't want to make a fuss, or because of pride. Those were the good old days. Those people didn't cost the taxpayer anything!

You want a wonderful radical society where everyone is supported, but seem to think the getting mucky and actually supporting others bit is everyone else’s job?
