To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

@glitterpaperchain In your original post you said shouldn’t we be aiming higher.

Aiming higher is what’s caused climate change. Humans have caused nearly all the problems on the planet by overconsumption and greed. Technology is a major driver of climate change.

What to do? It’s a real dilemma!!!

There is more than one way to aim high. Technology can be both a problem and a solution, look up solarpunk

Agree. We need to go back to older ways. Not double down in an attempt to game the system. Smaller cars, smaller houses, buy less tat. Less flying (and yes before anyone starts I do all these things - have never owned a car, live in a very basic house, haven’t flown for 8 years and spend very little. Try to ethically buy, etc).

All good ideas 👍

Thinking that we need to tax corporations more doesn't mean that I think we are a tax haven

I think the issue here is that you seem to have very black and white thinking. I'll say something like we should tax private profit more, and you'll respond with 'and how do we go about taxing ALL profit?'

And your comparison to Scandinavian countries. 'We have higher corporation tax than Scandinavia, why aren't we an amazing socialist state like them??' Because things are very complicated, one type of tax does not a socialist state make. It's about other taxes as well as how you spend it, in the context of a whole history of socialist practice.

Genuinely, I really think you would benefit from reading books. I recommend Ha Joon Chang. (You had a problem with Gabriel Zucman being French, do you also have a problem with South Koreans?)

Ireland’s economy is doing better than ours because they have better investment because they have lower corporation tax rates. Surely you understand global market competition? Confused

Sheismycherrypie · 25/06/2026 10:52

I don’t have a ‘problem’ with anyone but we live in the UK and it’s pointless reading arbitrary books about radically different countries and assuming we can apply the principles here.

Suchevilforebodings · 25/06/2026 11:00

What's baffling me - and genuinely baffling me, not mumsnet "baffling" - is that have we not seen this heat before?

It's what, 32 degrees? Maybe 35 in some areas? I am absolutely certain we have reached these temperatures before in the UK and it hasn't been received like this. Yes, it was later in the year, July or August but it's not "unprecedented" is it?

That's why I'm not sure why everyone is finding it hard to cope??

So, Gabriel Zucman is a French person but his research is not about France specifically. Seriously, please read about economics

Openly admitting a lack of understanding is the first step towards understanding, well done

So you want entire global reform because the UK is experiencing a heatwave?

We’re not a rich country though our tax take doesn’t cover our expenditures. Maybe if we stopped making every minor inconvenience a problem for the government to solve we’d be better off.

Ha, exactly. I am also very dubious of exactly how well people remember an event 50 years on. People don't even remember aspects of COVID accurately.

I grew up in the far south of the UK, anmd distinctly remember mum having to use a shovel to dig our way from the back door to the outside toilet ( and no it wasn't seemingly high drifts of snow just cos I was a kid, was actually door height)

If I just get on with it I will end up in hospital. So no I will not just get on with it

So what can you do other then just get on with it? If people are sensible, they won’t end up in Hospital.. stay hydrated, stay out the sun , buy fans, , portable air-conditioning whatever helps thenjust carry on. What else? Apart from come on here and moan of course, which achieves nothing. The temperature will drop down from tomorrow anyway.. next thing people will be moaning they’re too cold, some people are never happy.

gardenflowergirl · 25/06/2026 18:03

That's all gonna cost money that the government and businesses haven't got. So we just have to get on with it and close early if we need to.

Viviennemary · 25/06/2026 18:04

I'm glad I dont have to go to work in this heat. However, people do have to just get on with it. Whats the alternative. Close the hospitals and cancel operations because it's hot. I dont suppose folk who lived through world war 2 had the option to tell the enemy to stop the air raids because it was disturbing their sleep. I agree we are turning into a nation of totally pathetic weaklings.

Merrycritictime · 25/06/2026 18:04

The World Health Organisation is screaming for applied solutions re: climate change. Countries, councils, local authorities…just kick the time bomb down the road where eventually it will go BOOM, meanwhile everyone either denies it or blames someone else (or even God…or history ‘well we survived the ice ages’ yadda yadda). Fiddling while Rome (and everywhere else) burns 🔥

oliviaAustin · 25/06/2026 18:10

It would cost around around £300-500k to install AC in every classroom of a large British school. There are 22,000 state schools in the UK. The cost would be £2-11BILLION.

inappropriateraspberry · 25/06/2026 18:13

We should also be looking at how to mitigate climate change, and preparing ourselves for more weather extremes like this, and snow etc.

I'm freelance and work from home so there's no union for me. But again, this hyperindividualisation of bringing it back to me specifically when I'm talking about something I'd like to see in wider society. Why can't we discuss that without going WELL YOU DO IT THEN

It has to start with someone….well volunteered!
