To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

Boomers gonna boom.

I'm currently in hospital at 30 weeks pregnant after fainting at the train station. That's what I get for 'just get with it'.

I've been making as much noise as possible since I was 12 about the climate crisis. Eventually it'll clock hopefully not before it's too late.

It would cost around around £300-500k to install AC in every classroom of a large British school. There are 22,000 state schools in the UK. The cost would be £2-11BILLION.

As a PTA, we and many others have tarted thinking g about fu ding some portable ac units for the classrooms. It’s not a long term solution, but cheaper than a full install and they can be moved to wherever is needed.

RH1234 · 25/06/2026 18:15

Most workplaces have AC.

if you need it at home, but it, or buy a fan.

We don’t have this weather often enough to justify massive spend, we have more cold days hence insulation and winter fuel payments (…maybe not the best example)

Unfortunately It’s the cost v risk v benefit

For a few days every half century, I think that we should just get on with it rather than spaff hundreds of billions adapting infrastructure and working practices.

Were you not in the UK in 2022 or are you just really shit at maths? Temperatures rose to almost 40° and it was impossible to do anything for a week. It was also extremely hot last year for a bit. Your comment has to be one of the most ignorant I think I’ve ever seen on Mumsnet - and that’s saying something!

Switcher · 25/06/2026 18:17

I think we should be able to continue to function as an economy and go to work, which is what I would mean by "get on with it". I don't mean ignoring climate change or the changes we obviously need to make to handle our new reality. Bur I'm really tired of people just beating about how they can't sit in an air conditioned office and do their jobs. I've spent over four hours round trip every day for my commute to London this week because apparently providing a normal train service just too much to ask.

bafta16 · 25/06/2026 18:19

I was a young adult in 1976. The world was a different place. Thatcher sold off anything of worth and created the cult of the individual. Social Media makes it so much easier to be vile to people.

If I just get on with it I will end up in hospital. So no I will not just get on with it

How so ? Do you have an outside job? Why will you end up in hospital? Not the point of the thread I know , but just genuinely curious

bafta16 · 25/06/2026 18:22

buy less tat

Won't happen.

Dolphinnoises · 25/06/2026 18:23

Sploon · 24/06/2026 17:41

Maybe not this exact temperature but it's high 20s every summer term at some point. It was high 30s in 2022. 2018 had 5 weeks of very warm weather, a lot of days were in the 30s. It's really not like we don't get warm temperatures many years.

This isn’t the hottest it’s been. It’s been 40 degrees in recent years. This is the hottest it’s been in June.

Anybody?

user5683926547 · 25/06/2026 18:27

We live near a rapidly expanding commuter town in the south. In the last 10/15yrs we have had tens of thousands of houses built here. It’s not an exaggeration to say there is not a single tree planted to provide shade in any of the postage stamp gardens. Theres a wide strip of shrub/small trees around the perimeters to give an illusion of ‘green’ on the way in, but once within the houses, as I said not a single tree, no shade for anyone to sit under, no shade to cool the houses. These developments are all new and shiny at the moment, but the ghettos of the future.
We need less people, 3 or 4 billion less people world wide if any significant difference is to be made.

We’re not a rich country though our tax take doesn’t cover our expenditures. Maybe if we stopped making every minor inconvenience a problem for the government to solve we’d be better off.

This in a nutshell.

We need to be resilient and independent.
Currently more foes out in benefits than comes in with tax.

Grow up and stop asking for more laws and red tapes

Switcher · 25/06/2026 18:28

Sheismycherrypie · 25/06/2026 08:57

It’s not bitchy. I’m actually getting quite bored of this tone of thread, which makes out that anyone who thinks things are a bit more complex than ‘smash the corporations mannn! All it takes is ambition! We’re worth more than this’ are seen as capitalist stooges who lack vision or benevolence.

Of course I would like air con in hospitals and public buildings, of course I would like a better rail system (all my trains home were cancelled yday so had a 2 hour bus journey instead 🙃) but we are stuck with this very crappy flagging country until we get a grip on our out of control expenses, mainly the benefits bill and debt repayments.

Just going ‘but billionaires’ is just so tedious and has been done to death.

I could not agree more. It would be funny if it wasn't tragic for all of us.

Tauranga · 25/06/2026 18:30

SovietSpy · 24/06/2026 17:24

I agree. But there’s no willingness to change. Unfortunately there is a certain generation in this country that does not want change. They vote so politics revolves around their opinions and demands. They want to everyone suffer because it was hot in the 70s once and they ‘got on with it’. They say this as you struggle to go out to work and send your kids to school while they watch tv at home in the cool.

What a load of rubbish

glitterpaperchain · 24/06/2026 20:59

Honestly I'd rather discuss the idea of people that are content to just 'muddle through' rather than fight for change, instead of discussing the merits of taxing wealth vs cutting benefits. It's an attitude I've noticed for a while in many areas, the weather just being one.

But is the fight really worth it?

If it was something that affected people day in and day out you would have plenty of support, but hot and cold weather is probably the LEAST of most peoples problems and it is for only a very small portion of the year so you will never win any sort of fight, even if you had the energy to start one.. which most people don't.

So people do, by and large, just get on with it.. and whinge.. but we probably wouldn't be happy unless we were unhappy about something.

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 25/06/2026 18:34

Sploon · 24/06/2026 17:19

But for things like schools, it has to be the government that makes changes. We can't even begin to think about installing air con - we're quibbling over £30 expenses for resources. We are just so far away from being able to even consider upgrading our building. School is hot every year. I can't think of a summer recently when we've not had at least 2 weeks in the classroom where learning has been affected. No one would expect children to come to a school with no heating; I'm not sure why being too cold is considered so much worse than being too hot. Based on times when our heating has gone off, I'd say it's been far less problematic.

You can mitigate being too cold, to a certain extent, by wearing thermal clothing, hats, gloves, more layers etc.
Harder to mitigate being hot ...

You mentioned 1976. Yes, it's currently hot, but hasn't been this hot for 50 years. Spending a load of money on infrastructure would be an overreaction in my opinion.

But not for every scientist studying climate change

The max temp in 1976 was 35 Degrees C. We have had temps in excess of 40 in the past few years. Climate change makes these events more likely so we need to invest in our infrastructure so the country doesn’t grind to a halt. Governments need to invest in schools and other public buildings so people can carry on as normal.

1976 heatwave

UK heatwave: How do temperatures compare with 1976?

People have been comparing the current temperatures with 1976 heatwave. What does the evidence show?

The NHS have just declared an emergency across services because of this heat

Anyahyacinth · 25/06/2026 18:40

Extreme heat is associated with hundreds of excess deaths.

It places strain on our key workers who we should CARE about as they care for us.

Its basic decency. Future proofing too

Agree with this. We can’t keep up with house building with the current population figures especially immigration (our birth rate has gone way down, we should have far less people). They’re concreting over masses of greenery which isn’t helping the heat whatsoever. It’s constantly happening around by me and it makes me not only sad, but concerned on the future health of people who are surrounded by concrete.

Respectfully, the NHS can’t seem to cope when it’s business as usual so it’s getting hard to tell when they are having an actual emergency.
