To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

Loving the erudite but rather bitchy exchange between Sheismycherrypie and Glitterpaperchain

It’s not bitchy. I’m actually getting quite bored of this tone of thread, which makes out that anyone who thinks things are a bit more complex than ‘smash the corporations mannn! All it takes is ambition! We’re worth more than this’ are seen as capitalist stooges who lack vision or benevolence.

Of course I would like air con in hospitals and public buildings, of course I would like a better rail system (all my trains home were cancelled yday so had a 2 hour bus journey instead 🙃) but we are stuck with this very crappy flagging country until we get a grip on our out of control expenses, mainly the benefits bill and debt repayments.

Just going ‘but billionaires’ is just so tedious and has been done to death.

We’re not a rich country though our tax take doesn’t cover our expenditures. Maybe if we stopped making every minor inconvenience a problem for the government to solve we’d be better off.

This. It’s a lovely idea, but not practical, and won’t happen.

So, everyone has to get on with it for a few days. I’m in a red zone, but it’s forecast to end tomorrow, and be much cooler next week.

What you were actually saying, and what I was responding to way back when, was that the IMF were hovering to intervene in our economy because we were heading for an unmanageable debt crisis. This is bunkum and not a view shared by the huge majority of mainstream economists.

The "evidence" you gave for this was a single link to an AI-assembled article drawn from stories in the right-wing press (the Mail and Telegraph) based on testimony of fringe right-wing economists - including the father of austerity - the right-wing doctrine that has evidently failed our nation, perpetuating our sluggish growth and dismal productivity.

When challenged about this, you denied even that this came from the Mail and the Telegraph.

You are quoting AI slop as useful information. You are sharing extreme economic views as if they were fact. They are far from fact.

Hmm how does it go?

'you’ve been taken in by all those false prophets who tell you what you want to hear'

Again, that's not my point and it's getting a little sad that you have to exaggerate and misrepresent what I say in order to argue against it. I know it's a complex issue as I've read many books on the subject. You are welcome to recommend some books you've read that support your position.

My position is supported by decades of politics and history. Few countries has broken free of capitalism, and the ones that did all have dictators and are not places a sane person would want to move to. Even Scandinavia haven’t managed it.

You keep saying ‘that’s not my point’ but you’re not making a point. Just wittering on about ambition and how it should be funded by dismantling cronyism.

I don't think we need to break free of capitalism

So that's a no to recommending books then?

You're just wittering on with GB News talking points about benefit culture and the loony left.

Of course I have. But they’re opinion. They’re not fact, or usually by people who have a modicum of control over the situation. You pick the books that write the things you want to believe. They’re not a forecast.

People don’t want to pay more tax, but still expect the money to come from somewhere.🤷‍♀️

John Healey has also resigned due to the piss poor defence budget. These things are urgent, not train travel.

I don’t want to pay more tax, I want people currently not paying any tax to start paying tax. You can’t just squeeze an ever dwindling population.

That you think they’re ‘fact’ gives you away. They’re opinion books written by people who are making money out of telling people what they want to hear.

Apologies he’s not resigned yet but he had WhatsApp messages leaked:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jun/02/labour-not-looking-to-raise-taxes-to-fund-benefits-minister-says-after-whatsapp-messages-revealed

In messages between the work and pensions secretary, Pat McFadden, and Peter Mandelson released on Monday, McFadden wrote: “Every meeting I have is: ‘Who can we tax in order to pay benefits to others?’ They’re asking the wrong questions.”

I think like the rest he’ll hand his notice in within the year. Let me guess he’s a GB News stooge?

The Defence Secretary resigned. Who else are you thinking of?
