To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

You have an utopic view of how other countries deal with it. If you think there are never any train delays in Spain, Italy or Greece because of the hot weather, you are delusional.

I think you're the delusional one since you've imagined that? I never said there aren't any train delays. Someone asked how other countries deal with heat and I gave some factual answers. What about that is utopic? Which things on my list aren't true? It's not an exhaustive list of all possible effects in every country

...what are you talking about? Separate the state from the individual?

So you think people getting their needs met is the cause of problems today. Not the corporations generating billions in profit at the expense of the workforce and paying extremely little tax?

The NHS is very different and provides for many more people and needs than it did when it was set up, yes, but another difference between now and then is that when it was set up there were far more taxes in place to tax wealth. That's how it was funded. Since then the disparity between the rich and poor has grown to such an extent it's now at a similar level to what it was during the French revolution.

The reason we can't afford nice things is because more and more wealth has been removed from the economy and hoarded. Many services have been privatised and government contracts given to private companies which moves taxpayer money out of the public and into private hands.

And yet some people have been convinced that's it's...just checking your post...people seeking medical care, SEN children, and disabled people that are the problem.

Oh God, here we go.

No political party has managed to ‘extract all the profits from corporations’ because it isn’t actually possible. Not without causing pyrrhic economic damage and investment in this country to plummet. You can’t just take and take and use it to prop up the jobless and needy - that’s sixth form politics by dim people who have very little understanding of the world.

Do you want to tell me where I said we should extract ALL the profits?

If you have to exaggerate what I said to ridiculous proportions in order to argue against it you must have quite a weak position. Why do you feel it necessary to do that rather than respond to what I actually said?

Until tax revenue increases and people’s neediness and dependency on the state reduces, we are stuck like this, unfortunately.

You know what I meant. You’re forced to focus on semantics are your arguments are… well, flimsy at best.

There’s a reason many Chancellors of the Exchequers haven’t managed to do what you’re asserting would be so easy.

You are the person posting Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail content without realising it was Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail content. You can't really go around calling people dim.

So say what you mean rather than some made up thing designed to misrepresent what I said?

Yes there are many reasons. (I know you think I'm some dim 6th form level person but I do understand that there are reasons for things) Cronyism being one.

Can you refute what I’m actually saying? Maybe produce a couple of sources of your own, showing how we can just tax the corporations and be a very wealthy country again?

I was going to add ‘let me guess, you’ll say something about their mates’ but I didn’t 😂😂 what cronyism specifically? Of course there is some corruption and cronyism, but not to the tune of billions which it would take to even start making a dent in the things we’re discussing. Unless you can show otherwise?

There are economists talking about doing exactly that, such as Gabriel Zucman

I work in planning and architecture and I can guarantee you that these discussions are happening. But no one can afford to just upgrade the rail network etc it will take a lot of time. Also it is only for a few days and lots of the country above Birmingham are fine.

No I'm done, you'll use this to say that I'm wrong but the kind of tax changes and private deal made over literal decades is not something I'm going to explain in great detail in a mumsnet thread. There are literal books on the subject.

A recent one is Escape from Capitalism by Clara Mattei. George Monbiot is a good writer on capitalism and the environment.

Oh OP you’ve been taken in by all those false prophets who tell you what you want to hear. There is no escape from capitalism, not unless the Western world unanimously decides to do it in one go, which isn’t going to happen.

You moaned about train cancellations and I've said train cancellations due to the heat happens in got countries too!

It are you saying that this never happens because their infrastructure is such that trains are never delayed due to high temperatures?

@glitterpaperchain have you started a campaign? If you post the details I’m sure that many mumsnetters will be happy to join you, including me.

Loving the erudite but rather bitchy exchange between Sheismycherrypie and Glitterpaperchain

Passaggressfedup · 25/06/2026 08:52

There are literally train tracks becoming misshapen in the heat which means cancelled trains. Shall we send some mumsnetters out to go and yell at the train tracks to just get on with it?
So why are you pointing this out? What are your expectations?

They are clearly much too high for this earth!

What you were actually saying, and what I was responding to way back when, was that the IMF were hovering to intervene in our economy because we were heading for an unmanageable debt crisis. This is bunkum and not a view shared by the huge majority of mainstream economists.

The "evidence" you gave for this was a single link to an AI-assembled article drawn from stories in the right-wing press (the Mail and Telegraph) based on testimony of fringe right-wing economists - including the father of austerity - the right-wing doctrine that has evidently failed our nation, perpetuating our sluggish growth and dismal productivity.

When challenged about this, you denied even that this came from the Mail and the Telegraph.

You are quoting AI slop as useful information. You are sharing extreme economic views as if they were fact. They are far from fact.
