To be fed up of hearing 'just get on with it'?

This kind of 'just get on with it' RE the heat is all over Facebook. People talking about the heat in 1976 and saying 'we just got on with it' or 'we muddled through' (as if people didn't die as a result of that heatwave)

My issue is - shouldn't we as a society be aiming higher than just getting on with things and muddling through? We should be campaigning for better infrastructure, better working practices.

I just think we have all this technology, we're supposed to be a rich country, let's fight to make things better rather than just managing. What happened to the spirit of the first union workers who demanded better conditions and rights? I want to see that spirit back.

I’m just saying there are plenty of opportunities for you to be the change you want to see in the world. It’s easy to fall into a whiney trap of ‘why aren’t the government doing it’, but all of us can pick up litter, support the elderly, support smaller businesses, fundraise etc

In my OP I literally say 'let's fight to make things better' and somehow you got 'why aren't the government doing it' like I don't know how to help you understand at this point

Op time to put the wine down! It’s midnight so I will say goodnight

And you feel it's necessary to imply I'm drunk and put me down because....

Have a nice sleep, I'll be up half the night breastfeeding the baby (if only I hadn't drunk all that wine!)

The same ppl who tell us we must be responsible for ourselves are also the same ones who would tell a social housing tenant not to be ungrateful for a welfare visit from an HO. Well we are either responsible for ourselves or not which is it. They have certainly changed their tune since Covid. Being responsible for yourself back then was being a granny killer Funny how the MC wernt so keen on personal responsibility back then.

You have made exactly my point!!

People say 'stop moaning just get on with it and muddle through'

But your country didn't just get on with it, you made a change by making air conditioning more widespread! Why are you arguing with me??

I think I've had enough MN for today 😅

All you have to do to make air conditioning more widespread is to go out and purchase a unit and have it installed. What, pray tell, is stopping you. Surely you don't think the government provided them 🙄

Honestly, the term "whinging Poms" was coined for people just like you.

Agree. It's as simple as that. I have evap cooling and get it serviced once every couple of years. When it died, during a heatwave (a real one), we were fortunate to be able to get a technician to replace it the next day. Fans on the ceiling. None of it handed to us. I think this is what Europe is going to have to if this is becoming more regular. Start saving and have one by next year.

By 'more widespread' I'm thinking like schools and hospitals not my own house

Is it that hard to think outside of yourself and think about what might benefit other people?

So true. It's ridiculous that houses are built to such low standards.

I don't know why we have a culture that we should put up with low standards and discomfort, rather than improving our lot.

And we do have the money if we levy the correct taxes and spend it wisely.

Here here.

If formal building standards were strengthened and properly enforced, it would be a great help. Unfortunately the volume house builders have a lot of lobbying power. I would love a campaign to see this exposed to full public scrutiny.

I think you have missed my point entirely

So explain it simply. You want the unions or people like the unions to make things better ie infrastructure or working practices. Like what? You're criticising "people" for what they don't do (and what they do ie whinge) but what's your role?

I'm talking about a general trend I'm seeing in society recently. The heat is an example where I am seeing this attitude but I've noticed it for a few years. People seem to respond to negative things with 'just get on it with and stop moaning'. I'm asking, shouldn't we be setting our sights higher than 'just getting on'? It's the spirit of the labour unions I'm looking for. I'm wondering why it seems to be a trend.

Which is why people going WELL YOU DO IT THEN or JUST GET AN AIR CONDITIONER have entirely missed my point.

How are you personally enabling the country to be more ambitious? Do you work and pay taxes? What job do you do? Do you volunteer, do you do any of this change you want to see?

I have a plug in air con (and solar panels) and plans to get a proper wall unit installed by next summer. I'm actually not talking about myself in this thread. I know that's a difficult concept for some people to understand

Well I’ve asked a few times so will now have to draw my own inferences, which is you are one of the (hardcore group of) jobless posters on here who are very vocal about how they should be getting more, and why can’t they have it, and how ‘the government’ should provide them with whatever they like and if anyone disagrees we obviously hate both them and society (while dodging the economic questions).

I'm not jobless.

I don't understand why some people find it impossible to have a general discussion without individualising everything. If a researcher is studying a phonemon in society, do you think they open their paper with 'these are my personal circumstances'

I don't see why I need to explain my life to you in order to discuss a general trend I have noticed. Why do you need that so badly?

Because the reason why we can’t have all those nice expensive things you want is because of individualism.

The individuals in this country are so needy that they’re costing the country far far more than a comparable person 30 years ago. People visit the doctor far more, they draw pensions for longer, far more children need SEN packages and taxis, everyone wants things which cost a lot of money, seeing it as their ‘right’ while our benefit bill has spiralled to the extent PIP alone costs more than our entire military.

At this point you can’t separate the state from the individual as people like you want them to be heavily intertwined.

Passaggressfedup · 25/06/2026 08:04

Buildings built to stay cool
Widespread air conditioning
Siestas
Bodies that have acclimatised over time
Different work patterns

Yes, countries who are hot on enough days every year to make it a worthwhile investment.

Widespread air-conditioning? Well how about starting at home. Anyone can buy units...if indeed, they consider it a worthwhile investment. My step mum has, she is a happy bunny this week!

As for the acclimatising comment....the irony.....before before getting to the point of being acclimatised, guess what you need to do ..get on with it!

Rubyslipperswitch · 25/06/2026 08:05

Climate change and extreme weather events are real and we need to take action both in term of infrastructure and behaviour changes.

But for some people it is easier to put their head in the sand, pretend it is not happening, that this is just usual summer weather and that we should just 'get on with it'...

Humidity combine with heat is making things worse for us than if it was dry heat and our infrastructure is not set up to cope with extreme heat or cold.

This heat is truly dangerous for so many people: the elderly, children, people who take certain medications which makes it harder for their body to cope with the heat...

I think the 'get on with it' brigade are either the type that worship capitalism and/or are not affected much by the heat because they don't use public transport, work from home or have air conditioning. Nick Ferrari on LBC being a good example of that hypocrisy.

...what are you talking about? Separate the state from the individual?

So you think people getting their needs met is the cause of problems today. Not the corporations generating billions in profit at the expense of the workforce and paying extremely little tax?

The NHS is very different and provides for many more people and needs than it did when it was set up, yes, but another difference between now and then is that when it was set up there were far more taxes in place to tax wealth. That's how it was funded. Since then the disparity between the rich and poor has grown to such an extent it's now at a similar level to what it was during the French revolution.

The reason we can't afford nice things is because more and more wealth has been removed from the economy and hoarded. Many services have been privatised and government contracts given to private companies which moves taxpayer money out of the public and into private hands.

And yet some people have been convinced that's it's...just checking your post...people seeking medical care, SEN children, and disabled people that are the problem.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

There are literally train tracks becoming misshapen in the heat which means cancelled trains. Shall we send some mumsnetters out to go and yell at the train tracks to just get on with it?

But suggesting the government might want to do something about that is me being entitled and wanting everything done for me. I'll go roll my sleeves up and fix the train tracks myself!

OP posts:
Passaggressfedup · 25/06/2026 08:26

You have an utopic view of how other countries deal with it. If you think there are never any train delays in Spain, Italy or Greece because of the hot weather, you are delusional.
