To ask for a hoover that actually WORKS and will not SHOWER the floor with FILTH !

Having a quick hoover before work. Because we have the completely WORTHLESS shark, which spits and sprays the detritus out the back, all my revolting bits of dirt and grit went all over the floor in a fine mist of grot. I then trod on a shard of glass (c/o the Hoover) which I had to pull out my foot with tweezers. I wanted to be sick. Blood all over the carpet. NOT TOLERATING THIS WORTHLESS CORDLESS MACHINE A DAY LONGER !!!

I have a Hetty. My Mum bought her for me after my husband broke the cordless Dyson we had. My Mum has sworn by Henry et al for years. Yes, its heavy and does need to be plugged it but it does the job and boy, do we need one that does the job considering how much our cat sheds. We did used to have a robot hoover, affectionately named Noonoo it would do a good sweep of the ground hardfloors daily but it wasn't great on carpet and had to remember pick up the sheepskin rug or it would get stuck.

Mauhea · 23/06/2026 15:06

I also have a cordless Shark and it also does exactly the same thing. Useless bastard thing that seems to suck up every skin cell ever shed but anything larger than 5mm gets booted out either across the room or back at you. I have a Henry hoover buried somewhere in the spare room of doom that smells vaguely of wet dog despite us never having a dog and every time I use the crappy Shark I'm tempted to go rescue it.

You have to clean your vacuum cleaner and maintain it. The lacking "oomf" aside, if its spitting out dirt... it's on you.

We cleaned our shark until it gleamed inside and out. You could have eaten your dinner off it.
Little fucker still spat everything back out when it was switched off.

frecklejuice · 23/06/2026 21:08

I don’t have any recommendations but we have a Shark cordless and I hate it so I feel your pain!

TheCurious0range · 23/06/2026 22:00

Ours was awful, had it 5 years and it was like trigger's broom it had been repaired so many times. We've got a Henry quick pro now and it's great also maybe not popular but I like having a bagged hoover again

localnotail · 23/06/2026 22:01

I have an upright Shark with cord - really good. Powerful, cleans as good as when I bought it 4 year ago.

Dyson hoovers are shit. Quite intrigued about Henry - like their look, but they are HUGE! Always thought they are industrial type of hoover, for offices etc.

Madwoman94 · 23/06/2026 22:05

I’ve a Hetty she’s great, very low maintenance. Occasionally when she needs a really good clean I take her to visit my parents Henry and he hoovers her out. I do need to treat her to a new brush though

ToffeeCrabApple · 23/06/2026 22:06

After years of not understanding the Henry Love i caved and bought a quick pet and OMFG I LOVE IT

he is a chunky dad bod of a cordless but he gets the job done and you feel like you are hoovering with a rocket launcher

ToffeeCrabApple · 23/06/2026 22:08

I would also say you cannot use a cordless/handheld as your main or only hoover. Thats just not what they are built for. They are built for spot cleaning, hoovering the car, hoovering the stairs etc.

You need a main corded hoover as well. I
For that I have a miele cat & dog which is excellent.

Citadelica · 23/06/2026 22:16

I have a cordless shark and while it doesn't spit stuff out, it doesn't pick stuff up in the main mode. With the nozzle attachments it works. So not great.

Also have a dyson - works much better. Must be around 12- 15 yrs old. Getting a bit more faffy to reattach the dust container, but still works well.

LilacDrift · 23/06/2026 22:22

I love my Henry, He might fall over dramatically sometimes if I yank him too hard. But I've never had another vacuum cleaner to match him.

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/06/2026 22:24

Has my sebo 16 years. Best thing ever

Middlemarch123 · 23/06/2026 22:26

Another shout out for Henry, I’ve had far more expensive hoovers over the decades, but he’s never let me down. Although the cats hate him! No more wasting money in the future for me, it’s Henry all the way.

Pllystyrene · 23/06/2026 22:30

Another vote for Henry mine is older than my 15 year old and still works perfectly!

GustavaKlimt · 23/06/2026 11:05

I had a cordless shark that did exactly that. Cleaned everything. No difference. Lobbed it in the bin. I bought a Miele and the difference is night and day. Love it. Ive had it 3 years now and it's as good as new.

Me too,I bloody love my Miele. It’s so efficient and the bags last ages. Easy to change. Very long cord so not an issue. Best vacuum I’ve ever had. Will never buy anything else. Got a Black Friday deal on their website.

ChaliceinWonderland · 23/06/2026 22:37

Youspurnme · 23/06/2026 14:34

Yup you need a Henry. I’ve had Dysons, Sharks, Samsungs, Henry beats them all hands down

This!!!

Nat6999 · 23/06/2026 22:40

I've got a Gtech Air Ram Mk2, cheap as chips & brilliant, you have to empty it more often but it's light, easy to handle & good suction.

hecalledmecaptain · 23/06/2026 22:41

Good ole Henry.

I've had dysons and sharks and Vax and hated them all. Always turned my nose up at Henry until the cleaner gave us one of his. Ive never looked back.

Sidebeforeself · 23/06/2026 22:42

I bought a Henry and thought it was rubbish. Have a Bosch cordless now which was brilliant to start with but I now have same problem as you OP.. more grit when I’ve finished than when I started.

Fulbe · 23/06/2026 22:47

I have a cordless Vytronix. Cheap, light and does the job well, and it's a British brand. I've always hated hoovering previously. Only downside is you have to regularly clean the filters, but I think that's the same with Dysons.

TheLurpackYears · 23/06/2026 22:47

Henry Quick if you want to carry on cordless, only downside is the bags are about a quid each.
Are you absolutely sure all your tubes are clear and filters are clean though?

Lucinda7 · 23/06/2026 23:18

I have a Hetty Extra. She is 9 years old and very efficient. I also have a cordless vacuum cleaner for lighter jobs. Even my DH is impressed with Hetty.

dontlikethistoday · 23/06/2026 23:19

I love my Henry!

C8H10N4O2 · 23/06/2026 23:20

I’ve never found cordless vacuums to be much good. I have a 15 year old Miele Eco line which still works brilliantly. It was a best buy in Which, they still have that style of Miele in their best buys. Top rated cylinder model is currently Miele
Blizzard CX1 Powerline SKRF5 but if that is too pricey there are several between 150-250ukp such as the Miele Guard Flex 1 mentioned upthread.

Henrys don’t always do so well in Which tests (good middle not bottom of the heap) but every builder I know uses them. I think they are a bit noisier but that wouldn’t bother me.

2025M · 24/06/2026 06:49

I hate our Shark cordless with a passion. It adds on 20mins to every hoover because of how bad it is. As with other posters i spend half my life with it spitting bits out and removing the bottom. Possibly the worst purchase i have ever made.

I only use it for quick crumb blasts and use our 20 year old held together with gaffer tape Henry. It's outstanding compared to shark and what it collects in the same area is vastly different.
