It disheartens me when posters don’t read the facts or info the OP mentions in the OP or other posts.

Read the thread before commenting.

OP posts:

Maybe. I used an exaggerated example. Maybe a better one might be 'Do you like the name Romilly?' it might be a bit tactless to say 'It's horrible' if the baby is now 4 years old.

Well the op asks so…. Yep she runs the risks of people saying Hell no!!

CoolGreenBee · 22/06/2026 08:04

It's not just not reading the thread, it's that a majority of posters don't even seem to read the OP.

Social media really demonstrates how many people are functionally illiterate.

Or loads of people don’t take SM particularly seriously and so scan read at best.

Healthy

What's healthy about involving yourself in a conversation when you don't take the time to read what the conversation is about?

Feeling the overwhelming need to give an opinion when you haven't taken the time to read a few paragraphs so you don't actually understand what's been said or what's being asked?

I wouldn't say that's very healthy at all.

SM is inane
scan read if you want, post, move on and forget about it

or so what some do on mumsnet… see it as a full time job akin to saving the world

Turntheswitch · 22/06/2026 08:24

I don’t regard posting a one liner on a mumsnet thread as in any way “involving myself in a conversation “

it is a mumsnet thread. Will be forgotten by all in a few days at absolute most

So what's the point of wasting your time, the OPs time and the time of people who actually bother to read the thread?

What's it achieving?

If you're on MN to not read the OP and drop in a line which is probably irrelevant?

Why?

If we answer you does it help with writing your very important thesis about MN threads?

Mumsnet is a waste of time when you think about it 🤭

I am on it when I’m waiting in line at the post office; sitting in my car whilst my children are at tennis practise etc

It’s an inane way to kill a bit of time. No biggie. No going to plough through long op updates or pages of comments. I’ll read to what extent I want and I’ll post what I want. And then… forget about it!!

Turntheswitch · 22/06/2026 08:36

I am going to guess mumsnet is very important to you @CoolGreenBee ?

You could just read..

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 22/06/2026 08:48

Re checking dates - because if a specific date where something was going to happen has passed, there’s no point writing what you think OP should do.

People still writing on the thread about an elderly home owner being sent a note about someone visiting on Thursday and telling OP how to handle it - it was last Thursday and OP has updated. No point giving your badly thought out opinion now, and no point hoping it went ok as it’s all there in black and white.

And thus MN becomes a waste of time for everyone else. Threads which could have been informative/helpful/funny, spoilt by inane plops.

Agreed
at work, school, RL basically

not on SM. Some I’ll read from start to finish. Some… I won’t

So if it’s so useless to you… maybe do something else?

in the meantime, many will continue to read to whatever extent they wish to on mumsnet, and that’s there prerogative.

I didn’t say it was useless to me. There are bits I still value. Shame it’s degenerated.

I agree MN just feels more like a waste of time than it used to and I guess that's because of posters like the one above. I think it's arrogant to think your opinion has any value when you haven't even bothered to read the facts/look at the whole situation but society is like that now.

I'm not convinced MN will still be around in 10 years time because it will become as vacuous as Facebook.

Their prerogative not there.

Nobody objects to or complains about anyone reading as much as they want on MN.

What they object to is posting when you haven't read what you're responding to.

Because you still haven't said what the point is? What is the actual point of you feeling that you need to reply to a post you haven't actually read or understood?

It makes you look foolish or illiterate, wastes your time, the OPs time and the time of everyone reading the thread.

So why? if you're just wasting time and it's not important, you can just read. Why feel you have to respond?

I can’t say I give a fig what anonymous mumsnet obsessives think about me.

all I feel for them is… well a bit of pity if anything!

Turntheswitch · 22/06/2026 10:20

And on that note, I need to go to work.

Where I actually care what people think of me!

I feel like you're trying to flex or something?

You're not.

You're basically saying I waste my time and yours and don't care what you think and if you care about MN, you're ridiculous and should just not and do something else?

How about you do something else then? If it's not important and you don't care, there's hundreds of not-important things you could be doing that don't waste other peoples time and effect an entire website.

LobeliaCider · 22/06/2026 10:36

How would you feel if your ungrateful daughter-in-law called you an "interfering cow" when you were only trying to help?

muddyford · 22/06/2026 10:46

I read all the OP's comments but I'm not reading 750 other posters' remarks.
