It disheartens me when posters don’t read the facts or info the OP mentions in the OP or other posts.

Read the thread before commenting.

What I said in the post she's replying to. It's all in the quote history.

“Seconds”

have you seen the length of some threads
and some Ops post hundreds of lengthy updates

Log it with 101.

This is the best of the thread!!

Which is why I said reading the OP's posts might take time, but clocking the date of the OP, the number of posts in the thread and whether there are hundreds of posts after the OP's last contribution does indeed take seconds.

DeeNiall · 21/06/2026 17:08

You can show the OP's posts by selecting See all. If you then select Flip the most recent one will be at the top after the OP itself.
It might mean you don't post something completely irrelevant or unhelpful.

Is that what we're meant to be doing?

But that’s the confusing bit. If an OP’s posted hundreds of lengthy updates then it’s obvious things are going to have moved on quite a lot so what’s the point of anyone just commenting on the opening post?

champagnetrial · 21/06/2026 17:25

I'm sorry, op. that sounds tough. I would probably prick it with a fork until it pops. Failing that, say if it's not sorted by Tuesday you'll refer to the ombudsman.
HTH😊

Who cares about the date of a thread? If someone wants to make a comment and then others join in…. Isn’t it chewing the fat? Debating an issue? Having a chat?

and who care if there’s hundreds of posts, if I want to post, I will

I mean… there’s not a huge amount of “point” to about 90% minimum of mumsnet threads 🤷‍♀️

Was it ever thus. Cancel the cheque.

It’s bloody irritating. But if we’re asking people to read the OP, we should also stop OPs drip feeding information that substantially changes the original position.

I agree about drip feeding but some people don’t seem to be able to read more then a few paragraphs so if you try to put lots of relevant details in the OP you get lots of comments saying
“this was too long so I didn’t read it”.
It’s also common to see people admitting they just skim read it so they still ask questions where the answers had already been posted.

I don’t know how people manage to read books anymore or emails for work if they struggle to read anything longer than a few lines of text. It takes a few minutes at most and if the information is included you don’t have to wait for updates with lots of people commenting and asking the same questions.

I don’t take it that seriously but like a pp said it does really annoy me when people post and don’t return because I feel like I’ve wasted my time bothering.
I always check if OP has come back to the thread now or I assume its likely to be a troll post where someone writes controversial OP that’s actually quite interesting then it’s annoying to take the bait and be left hanging 😆.

Because most “ people” don’t remotely regard mumsnet akin to a book or a work email.

And quite frankly… if you do, then you have a mumsnet obsession

HoppityBun · 21/06/2026 17:54

I actually think that MN should consider limiting threads to maybe 200 posts to account for the decrease in people's attention spans. Then no-one really has an excuse to post without having read the whole thread.

Do you really think that’ll stop them?

do I win the £40?

Strangerpings · 21/06/2026 18:57

I never really get why people take it upon themselves to police the message board. Yes, people should read the post. However, if they don’t, I don’t see why anyone would find that disheartening.

Its the same as people who post specifically to note the OP has posted and “run” - if they have, why do they give a shit?

DeeNiall · 21/06/2026 19:04

@Strangerpings , because sometimes the thread has moved on considerably.

If, for example, the OP was asking if she was being unreasonable in being uncomfortable about her DH's friendship, but the OP has since established that not only impregnated the 'friend' and punched the OP, it would be inappropriate to say that OP was 'insecure and suspicious' and 'men and women can be just friends'.

I usually check a long thread.

Well then likelihood is the op is a fake because when the drips are HUGE and cast a totally different light on the situation.. it usually means the op wasn’t get the responses she expected and wanted… so starts exaggerating or making shit up

Maybe. I used an exaggerated example. Maybe a better one might be 'Do you like the name Romilly?' it might be a bit tactless to say 'It's horrible' if the baby is now 4 years old.
