AIBU to object to my partner wearing his late father's underwear?

As the title says, am I being unreasonable to object to my partner wearing his (late) father's underwear?

His father died a few years ago, and his mother gave him lots of quite nice clothes of his father's to have. I recently discovered that he'd also inherited his father's underwear which he is now wearing! He claims it has been washed countless times and is in good condition, so he doesn't get why I would object. But, I do....! Would you??

Er, no. Deeply odd

Well in that case surely he can pull on non dad’s inherited pants when you do see him?! Perfect Christmas present right them…. New pants to be worn when he goes on a date with you!

Ha! Yes, that's our usual solution - we respect each other's preferences when we are together on weekends, and do our own thing when we are not! Works very well for us. I have bought him pants from oddballs in the past, they are very entertaining.

Well, I objected, and he said "sure, I'll just take them off" :))

You have said “the agreement was you don’t wear them when you are together”!!

Turntheswitch · 21/06/2026 16:24

Did you ever meet his dad?

spiderlight · 21/06/2026 16:27

I once discovered that a particularly vile pair of my ex's pants had originally belonged to his late grandma's toy-boy. Those went straight in the bin!

Yup, this is my preference!

Yes, he was a lovely man.

If they are nice and to his style why not, if they are ancient white Y-fronts no. Does he wear them to bed? His bits in his dad's pants in your bed a bit weird definitely.

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 21/06/2026 16:27

Yup, this is my preference!

And you have d made that clear to him? And he respects it?

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 21/06/2026 16:42

Thanks to all the posters for your responses. Entertaining range of responses to our domestic disagreement. I'm feeling vindicated by the vote too, so thank you for that too!

Just to clarify - this isn't and was never a deal breaker. It was more of a ' really?!' and an eye roll reaction from me rather than a you-do-this-over-my-dead-body type reaction. But an eye roll is not the reaction he wants from me when he gets down to his underpants so this will sort itself out. Especially as we don't live together and I don't need to wash or see his hand-me-down underpants! He has a full range of others too.

Does this count?

On clearing out a late great uncle’s clothes, we found packs of socks unworn as still had the tags on. My DF wore these

CoralOP · 21/06/2026 17:06

I've lent knickers to a friend when we went on holiday and she had forgot her knickers, can't say I would be bothered at all.

Turntheswitch · 21/06/2026 17:16

I am going to guess he’s pretty…. Careful with his money

Zov · 21/06/2026 17:32

Just when I thought I'd read it all on here! 😂

MrsOni · 20/06/2026 17:09

Because it's someone else's pants?

Because they are pants worn by his dad?

Because they are pants formally belonging to a dead person?

Any one of those 3 is enough to give me the ick, let alone all 3.

Edited

But he wouldn't have been wearing them after he passed away.
Nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Laura95167 · 21/06/2026 18:26

Unless it was new in pack its full weird.

Excited101 · 21/06/2026 19:06

Pants, absolutely not. There’s a reason charity shops won’t take them. It’s not at all like other clothes- they’ve been up someone else’s arse crack!

Waitingfordoggo · 21/06/2026 19:11

What’s all this about pants being up someone’s arse crack? Folks are wearing the wrong size if that’s the case. (Or wearing thongs and I think OP would have mentioned that if it was the case).

FFSItsTooHot · 21/06/2026 19:13

Got this image of white Y- fronts in my head 😂

Newyearawaits · 21/06/2026 19:15

Don't see what the problem is and why you are questioning him about it.
Why is it bothering you so much?

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 21/06/2026 19:17

There are some things in life that it really is OK to just throw out. The underpants of a bloke who has died definitely fall into that category.

whyohwhyisitalwayswet · 20/06/2026 17:05

This is his argument, but I'm in the 'its weird' camp!

Charity shops will take trousers, shirts etc - but not underwear
Ask him if he would be turned on by you wearing your mum's knickers

Not on Mumsnet. If you don’t want your man wearing dead daddy’s pants you’re a weirdo and what’s your problem?

Manthide · 21/06/2026 19:26

I wouldn't have a problem with it - presumably he only wears non holey pairs with no staining from the previous wearer. Dd3 often wears her older sisters' knickers that they left behind when they moved out. My db died 2 years ago (I have no idea what happened to his underpants - df may be wearing them but he was a very clean person). I wear his socks and tshirts.

It depends on whether they r well worn and also the type. Y Fronts as in tighty whiteys arm noooooo. If they r just boxers and reasonably loose I wouldnt be bothered really x
