AIBU to challenge the school’s wording about pupils rolling skirts up?

GreenSalon · 19/06/2026 17:50

Weekly newsletter today from DC’s secondary school contained a paragraph on uniform including the fact that there have been complaints from the public about “pupils who choose to wear skirts” rolling them up to wear them extremely short. It finishes with asking parents to speak to their children about why this is “not a good idea”.

Now, apart from the fact I assume that they must mean girls, is this not clearly implying that short skirts = making themselves vulnerable and if is, then if anything bad happens as a result it is their own fault? I thought we had moved beyond this kind of nonsense.

I only have boys at the school not girls but want to write to the head to point out how utterly sexist this is. DH agrees with me pov but thinks I shouldn’t write. AIBU?

They said yes go ahead please do.

IMO this thread is no longer about that but whether most posters think it’s acceptable to come on and call young women whores.

But you aren’t?

Gloriia · 23/06/2026 11:32

Using misogynistic slurs when describing schoolgirls of course isnt breaking TGs. If I called another poster a slur that would be. Probably better to let the awful derogatory sneers stand tbh as it shows up what the actual problem is with appalling judgement and shaming.

So as you say your issue with the thread is the language employed

but fundamentally, like your daughters, you agree with a uniform code and it being adhered to. Correct @Gloriia ?

But if a man wanted to walk around in a jockstrap, we'd find it disgusting. But apparently we shouldn't be allowed to express our disgust we should just police it nicely or something.

Oh you can express 'disgust' obviously. A man walking round in a jockstrap would be totally inappropriate but not remotely comparable to what the thread is about though.

CricketIsASport · 23/06/2026 11:41

Gloriia · 23/06/2026 11:29

I think they look awful but I'd never call anyone a tramp or a whore for having them?

I'm saying thing on here that we think. You might walk past and think "rank that's incredibly inappropriate". And now people are just saying what they think.

Have you actually read my posts?

Yes I agree with a dress code. I don't agree with the misogyny and hysteria demonstrated on this very thread.

Dress codes can be enforced calmly and rationally without slurs, shaming, <'rolls of fat' a few posts back but I seem to be the only one appalled by that> and awful blaming schookids for pervs behaviour/'discomfort'. Teachers should get back in their boxes and focus on teaching kids competently.

And the way the girls are dressing is incredibly inappropriate as well

Gloriia · 23/06/2026 11:44

'Surely anyone on a site predominantly aimed at supporting women would take exception to this language? It’s unlikely to be a reporting issue as it’s presented as opinion but it’s beyond distasteful'

Thank god! Exactly op. All the other sensible people must be at work Grin.

Absolutely right, @Gloriia. As I said earlier, neutral language from the school would be something like “All skirts must be knee length, and underwear should not be showing - this applies to all pupils”.

Ok. Progress at last. Of course you can say it's inappropriate to break dress codes if you like.

That is not the same as saying 'tramp/whore/sweaty arse cheeks/like baboons showing their genitals/rolls of fat'/ like pervs flashing in parks' etc etc.

One of you go there in the end! Well done.

Why be so polite about it?

CricketIsASport · 23/06/2026 12:00

I don't care about the language used. It's only being used because they are dressing in an improper manner. People are saying what they blatantly think. Calling it as it is.

Both you and Gloriia seem determined to deliberately misinterpret what people are saying for your own agenda.

Nobody has called young women whores. What's been said is that hiking a skirt up so high that it's exposing your underwear and/or bum makes the girl look like a whore.

And that's a perfectly fair comment. Many of these girls are physically developed women, so if they wear clothing that an adult woman might wear they will obviously look just like those adult women.

Street prostitutes do often wear extremely short skirts that reveal their underwear/bum, so if a physically developed teenage girl does the same she will look like a whore, whether you like it or not. But of course that doesn't mean that she is one, neither does it mean that she wants to look like one, and nobody is saying that, so please don't put words in their mouth just so you can suffer faux-outrage.

I used to do it and my skirt was pleated and it looks ridiculous and my teacher said ‘Please sort your skirt out, I can see what you’ve had for breakfast!’ In front of everyone! Clearly it bothered me as over 20 years later I remember it and her as she’s now my gym instructor!!

I think it’s wrong when I see young girls brazenly walking around with their bums on display because their skirts are rolled up. Saying it isn’t a good idea is fine wording IMO, they’re longer for a reason to cover your modesty. Boys of that age are clearly going to be interested in girls and it just adds something else for the school to think about. This isn’t about feminism!!

Tattoos are awful, they look ugly and so cheap no matter how much they cost.

well, still rather unpleasant given so many women do have tattoos

Exactly. The mask slipped a good few pages ago.

Agreed

but I am still unclear re what your position is @Gloriia on the OP and as it seems on the one hand… you agree with a uniform code and indeed your own daughters never failed but to strictly conform to their schools dress codes, but on the other hand you think that they should be able to wear what they want and teacher’s exclusive focus should be on teaching?

Plantchoc · 23/06/2026 13:03

@GreenSalon so your teacher friend thinks you should absolutely challenge the school on this newsletter (does she clarify why she is so insistent on that point?) but you have decided not to? Or you are going to challenge?

Rescuedog12 · 23/06/2026 13:04

Suggest to the school they change to skorts as part of the uniform.problem solved.

I strongly believe women and girls should be able to wear what they like without being called out on it.

That is the diametric opposite to the concept of 'uniform' then isn't it? I am sure that school uniform was in place long before you enrolled your daughter.

Indeed - it's the elephant in the room, and I don't know why so many students and parents just don't seem to get it.

I wonder if some people are just trying to be difficult and push boundaries for the sake of it. In the highly unlikely event that the school changed their official uniform policy so that skirts had to be short enough that everybody in the vicinity could see the wearers' pants and bum cheeks, I bet some of the most furious complaints would come from the families of girls who already insist on wearing just that!

I agree. I still don't actually see why it's supposedly shaming anybody to concede that bottoms are parts of everybody's body can get sweaty and that people don't want direct contact with somebody else's.

Nor to point out that flashing is flashing, regardless of who chooses to do it.

Gloriia · 23/06/2026 13:38

Are you serious or are you taking the piss?! I've explained my position repeatedly.

I'll do it again for you though if you're struggling.

I agree and support dress codes to a degree. These can be enforced and policed calmly and professionally. I never want to hear the misogynistic crap we've seen spouted tbroughout this thread such a tramps/whores/ arse cheeks/like pervs in parks flashing/like baboons waving genitals etc etc etc.

A pp managed to sum it up perfectly 'Absolutely right, As I said earlier, neutral language from the school would be something like “All skirts must be knee length, and underwear should not be showing - this applies to all pupils”.

Surely you understand now Confused

In the meantime teachers please teach. Teach!
