Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

I disagree with illegal immigration. It's dangerous and costly in terms of human life. I think there should be many more safe and legal routes for asylum seekers. I've never been called a racist. It depends on how you couch your views.

Well that’s something we can definitely agree on. But I have been called racist on various threads on MN. As a white British mum to mixed raced kids with a beautiful warm brown coloured skin tone, I couldn’t disagree more with this logic about me being racist.

LovingTelescopes · Yesterday 19:26

ClarkeandNewman · Yesterday 19:20

The definition hasn't changed. People seem more comfortable with expressing views that used to be seen as shameful. I think it's because they've been given permission to do so by right wing populists like Farage, Johnson, Trump, those kind of figureheads.

You are wrong but as you wish.

I’m not sure what the war in Iran has to do with the UK…. But I guess you are deflecting again. I think you should do some research. Many articles state he is the worst PM in history. Put it this way, in the whole 46 years I’ve been alive I’ve never known a PM become so unpopular within their 1st year of premiership. Starmer has managed that in true Starmer style. You can deny all you like but nobody wants him in power anymore (apart from people like yourself). What do you think this thread is about - Burnham winning the by election as a way to get into Westminster to get Starmer out. It was all a well articulated set up for that very reason. But you can deny that all you like.

Really? You don't see what the Iran war has to do with the UK?? Why do you think prices are rising everywhere?? Surely you aren't that stupid?

And again with the sweeping statements "nobody wants him in power"?
What, your friends down the pub? The Daily Mail?

The Right wing press have been out for Starmer from day one because they were scared that the glory days for the rich were going to be over and he might try to redistribute wealth a bit more.
So they have had a constant campaign against him and have told people he is unpopular. They would have done it to any Labour leader and will do it to Burnham if he gets in.

You need to start honing your own critical thinking skills and be less influenced by what you read in the papers & online.

KatiePricesKnickers · Yesterday 19:27

ClarkeandNewman · Yesterday 19:17

I'm not convinced that popularity is synonymous with being a good PM.

I think one of Starmer's biggest failings is that he keeps incredibly quiet about positive changes the government makes. Why?

On immigration and the NHS at least, Labour seem to be making progress.
Why isn’t Labour on radio shows and TV stating the actual figures of how well they are doing ?
It really seems to be a missed opportunity.

Because they aren't invited on - the press in this country is largely managed by wealthy right wing folks who don't want any good news stories getting out!

Yeah I refer you back to the post very early this morning. I think somewhere near 6am where someone made a blatantly obvious racist post about white male leaders. Yet nobody batted an eyelid about it. If they had mentioned “brown leaders”, however, there would have been uproar. It seems nowadays it’s absolutely ok for people to be racist against white people!

It wasn't racist. It was, at worst, prejudiced, although, as I said you'd be hard pressed to make a convincing argument about the lack of white men in positions of power. Therefore I don't believe it even reached the threshold for prejudice. I think it was an apt observation.

Oh pull the other one. I really don’t have time for this shit! The only people who seem to want KS to stay are the likes of you! Well, I’m sure you will get your wish as he seems unwilling to stand aside and would rather pretend he’s doing such an amazing job! Oh well… I’ll let you keep batting on about how wonderful you think he is. I’m sure he will give a shit about your views. Just like he has about the rest of his voters…. NOT!

In the UK, as a predominantly white country, I think it’s to be expected that the majority of leaders are white. We have also had female leaders…. Thatcher… Theresa May… Truss…. Funnily enough though all tory. So your comment may have a bit of truth in it… towards a certain Labour party I guess. However, my point was that if someone had mentioned ‘brown skin’ the whole of MN would have been on it and the post would have been deleted by the moderators.

I haven’t ran away. I just cannot reason with someone who is so in love with Starmer when the whole point of this thread was regarding burnham’s win in Makerfield which was set up to get Starmer out…. Go figure

Do you think saying that upsets me?

You came on here with rude, sweeping statements, having a go at people but you have nothing to back your statements up with so now you are getting cross, swearing and running away.

Good, because you weren't to the debate anyway.

ClarkeandNewman · Yesterday 19:36

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 19:18

I agree. But the whole country nowadays is divided. We all seem to hate each other, including on these threads. People have done well to campaign against misogyny and racism and we have come a long way since then. But when you get a completely divided nation and many different political parties that didn’t exist years ago all giving their views then it’s something else altogether.
i hate absolutely nobody for being a different skin colour, even my mixed race kids. But somehow get called a racist for speaking up against illegal migration. What I can’t stand is the total ‘shutdown’ and silencing of opinions that don’t adhere to the left’s way of thinking.

I agree that politics is becoming more fragmented. We're seeing the end of a political system that's endured for more than a century and that's going to cause upheaval. I think we've been condemned to live in interesting times! I believe that the division comes from the right and its internal struggle to move public opinion and policy further rightwards as the lessons of WW2 and the Holocaust move out of living memory. We're also in a later stage of capitalism than we were 40 years ago which necessitates division.

Rude sweeping statements says it all. You were offended on behalf of Starmer 😂 And personally, I couldn’t give a monkeys arse whether or not he cares about you. But for you to be upset on his behalf shows you care a lot about him! I haven’t run away. I stand by my word… he is a laughing stock on the world stage. Sorry that offends you!

Wasn’t like this 30/40 years ago.

You’re right. It was worse. We were enduring Thatcher 40 years ago.

Ah see I’m of the opinion that the division is coming from the left because they seem to shut down and belittle any concerns from the right. But honestly, I absolutely respect your views and it’s very rare that I see someone as sensible and logical as you comment on these sort of threads. But you know what? I can agree with some of your points. I think if more people had your sort of logic then we would all get along just fine. It’s the gaslighting, manipulative tactics of some of the left in an attempt to shut down concerns from people of the right I cannot stand. But I haven’t seen that in you.
We are definitely living in interesting times. I guess it would be great to see the whole country united. But we are a long way off that.

I definitely think there's common ground to be found, especially if you can agree to disagree! It's good to hear other people's viewpoints.

Don't try to turn it round - again!
You have brought nothing to the debate here except things you are parroting from the right wing press that you have no actual evidence to back up.

I don't necessarily love Starmer but I do despise people who rubbish him or any other politician they don't like but with no actual argument to back it up with.

It was so obvious you were one of those - just posting empty sweeping statements and thinking you were clever. But when someone questions you, you just crumble and resort to insults. 😂

Yes it definitely is. Common ground is great. Resorting to insults is not. Like I said, I think you have been really sensible in what you have said without resorting to insults which is refreshing.

Fellow mum to mixed race kiddo here and also MN racist! 🤷‍♀️

Mind you, my Muslim DH has been called an Islamophobe for expressing perfectly reasonable views about very young girls wearing hijabs. We seem to be determined to protect the intolerant folk of any race or religion, at any cost.

i have my opinion, you have yours. You love Starmer I get it. Personally I can’t see what he has done good for the country. And I still stand by my words that he has made us look like a fool on the world stage. You can’t see that. But it’s Friday night and I’m beyond the point of caring now. Tee hee hee. It’s hilarious isn’t it how they can jump to the conclusion we are racist. I’m jealous of my kid’s warm tanned skin tone.
I’m the least racist person on earth but because I speak up about unlimited illegal immigration it makes me racist apparently…. Go figure 😂
