Burnham has won. More turmoil?

Now Burnham has won, it will trigger a leadership contest, and if he wins, a new chancellor of the exchequer.

Surely this cannot be good for the country, or its finances?

YABU - Burnham is a true leader who will improve the UK for everyone and be a competent and respected leader.

YANBU - FFS, here we go again.

Can you really imagine Angela Rayner as PM? Representing this country on an international platform? God help us...

I wish the laugh emoji was still around! 🤭

I like Kemi too. She seems so down to earth. The problem is she’s a leader of a party that now has a seriously bad reputation and it’s going to be difficult, if not impossible for her to fix. She would probably be better off starting her own party at this rate. But the more I listen to her take on KS in the PMQs the more I like her.

She seems so down to earth. 😂

This brings to mind a quote by some wag or other describing a Tory MP thus: "Something about him suggests a mother planet other than Earth."

Who do you like @incidentally? Out of the leaders

I liked Keir Starmer but as his days seem to be numbered I support Andy Burnham for the next leader.

I know. How can we still be believing that the Tories are the party that champions the economy when they presided over such a decline in this country this century plus the economically disastrous Brexit. Just because it may benefit you short term with e.g. lower taxes, it doesn’t long term with crumbling infrastructure and a crumbling economy.

The press! It's down to mainly tory owned press. Shocking state of affairs.

incidentally · Yesterday 12:07

And it's not really a question of 'liking' anyone in particular, I support what Labour stand for and are trying to do in a difficult political, national and global climate. They may not be perfect but I do not agree with any of the other parties' stance, statements or policies.

Why? Because she's a woman? Because she is 'common'? Because she's been photographed, no, papped smoking or on a boat?

Starmer is definitely not relatable though it’s why he’s going, and other reasons. Your earlier android description fits Starmer way more, hence the party ousting him.

Burnham might have more of a chance to connect.

Yep. Better than the rewriting of her last name too on some threads. I like her, and it looks like others do too going by her polling. She polls above the others and a smidge away from being the only leader with a positive net rating.

And I still think Labour have a better chance with Burnham not Starmer. If Labour MPs are feeling hopeful today which I’m sure many are then get him in. They’d be mad not to.

How funny to see you call out namecalling 😂

Mcdhotchoc · Yesterday 12:11

At least Reform didn't win.
Labour clearly need to go with a popular vote and someone with more personality. Let's hope it's enough to consolidate the vote away from the far right.

I don't agree that he isn't relatable, he strikes me as a normal person, probably an introvert. Nothing wrong with that. I think it's childish to expect the prime minister to be like your best buddy - we shouldn't choose leaders on that basis. Boris Johnson, anyone?

But I agree that Andy Burnham appears more charismatic and he is certainly coming out fighting, so if people respond to that, so be it.

StressedLP1 · Yesterday 12:12

Abhannmor · Yesterday 11:45

I won't vote coz I don't live in Britain. But was over last week for a visit. My sis and bil are happy enough with Starmer, they like that he is boring. And they say things are slowly improving. They run a small promotions business so pay attention to stuff like inflation.

Having said that I think the main problem with any change at PM will be the Tory press as per usual. Eden replaced Churchill to widespread indifference. MacMillan usurped Eden , yawn. Douglas Home dislodged MacMillan, whatever. Major pushed Thatcher aside , phew. May , Johnson, Truss , Sunak , wake me up when it's over.
But if it's a Labour guy the case is altered suddenly - he has no mandate ! Immediate election or it's the end of civilization as we know it.
You can just see Chris Mason , Kuennsberg et al ramping up the faux outrage , to say nothing of GBH news....

Yes to all of this. I just want boring and reliable with change going in the right direction. Exactly what the right wing owned press hate.

Boris, Trump and Jacinda should have taught us what happens when people vote for a Big Personality.

You brought up the android line and that’s one of Starmer’s issues.

Exactly. People put too much importance on the characters. Starmer is well regarded internationally, he's quite level headed. Boris was out of his depth.

But it's the labour party I support (though it is waning!), they are still the better party out of the ones we have now imo. Unfortunately our British (tory press) will never admit any of this.

Yes, but I don't see KS as coming across like an android. He's just 'grey' and quiet. For me KB appears like someone who is constantly putting on an act, or worse still, she is actually like that, a person who seems very detached, which I cannot trust.

StressedLP1 · Yesterday 12:17

ClarkeandNewman · Yesterday 12:13

And Liz Truss made it to PM. The cream doesn’t always rise to the top.

ByGraptharsHammer · Yesterday 12:18

Tbh it might be that Conservative and Labour are getting the wrong message. Lots of posters are acting as if it’s a straight choice between these two parties. It is not. It looks like it is a choice between Reform and Labour.

Kemi B maybe saying some interesting things but I do not think her party are a runner in terms of the next election. Labour seem to be deciding that if they want to beat Reform, they need to change. Might thus logic also extend to the Conservatives? The Labour Party do not seem concerned about the Tories, do they?

incidentally · Yesterday 12:20

Flyingintotheunknown · Yesterday 12:16

So what would you describe Starmer as then?

Calm, level-headed, essentially trustworthy. He has made mistakes, sure, but I believe he has the country's best interests at heart. But if he is going, I'm Team Burnham, and of course I have warmed to him as someone who seems confident and who is more at ease in the spotlight than KS.
