After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

Except Tennis (Andy Murray) and cycling (Chris Hoy) and rowing (Katherine Granger) and managing football teams (Dalglish, Ferguson) and Curling (too many to name) and running (Liz McColgan, Alan Wells, Eric Liddell) and motorsport (Jackie Stewart) and darts (Jocky Wilson) and golf (Colin Montgomery) and swimming (Duncan Scott)….

Yeah, Scotland are rubbish at sport

John Huggins and Stephen hendry

dailychallenge · 18/06/2026 13:16

I am going to add Eilish McColgan and Laura Muir. Runners in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Jamie Murray, Colin McRae, David Coulthard.

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 18/06/2026 13:36

Jackie Stewart, David Coulthard, Jim Clark (widely known as one of the best all-time drivers), Dario Franchitti, Allan McNish, Susie Wolff, Chloe Grant.

All just from the racing world 🤷‍♀️

Duncan Scott won gold in the 4×200m freestyle relay at Tokyo 2020 and added further relay gold in Paris 2024, making him Scotland’s most decorated Olympian.

Katie Archibald earned Olympic gold in the women’s team pursuit at Rio 2016 and in the Madison at Tokyo 2020.

Heather Stanning won gold in the women’s coxless pair at both London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Scott Brash won team jumping gold in equestrian at the Paris 2024 Games.

Sholto Carnegie won rowing gold for Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

YANBU. Support who you want to.

I’m the opposite way round. Scottish born & bred. I would love to be proud of my country but I can’t be because I absolutely detest the embarrassingly small-minded, chippy ‘Anyone But England’ mentality of so many Scottish people. Which is who I’m supporting England. A proud nation which doesn’t have a pathetic inferiority complex. At least we might win a couple of games…

Don't worry, you embarrass us too.

Calling me “strange” and “hysterical” is a convenient way to avoid acknowledging that you couldn’t defend your own argument. If that’s the note you want to bow out on, that’s entirely your choice.

All the best with the flounce. Goodbye accepted.

Nope, just I literally have better things to do! See ya.

Perpetualscroller · 18/06/2026 16:06

Thanks all for adding to my list. I started with the most famous and successful worldwide to prove my point. I didn’t even begin to name the many, many individual footballers (men and women, Kim Little) or Rugby players who have had unbelievable success with their respective teams. Just cause the teams often fall short, doesn’t mean the Scots are collectively bad at all sport.

I will add, as a proud Scot, that I also proudly wave my Union Jack every other 4 years for the Olympics, supporting athletes from all 4 nations with equal gusto and measure. I’m another Scot that’s not a member of the ABE camp and quite like to see the team doing well. I watched the game last night and thought they were impressive, especially after Saka came on.

I’ll be wasting my breath to say the ABE stuff mostly really is the Scottish sense of humour, which is notoriously hard to read. Mostly cause the people on here who don’t believe me aren’t listening anyway.

Yes there are some who take it seriously, but I would also point out this is football, it’s not exclusive to Scots. Ask an Arsenal fan to support Spurs in Europe. Ask a Liverpool fan to support Everton in the FA cup final. It’s Derby’s and rivalry, and it’s what the sport is about.

OP, we’d be delighted to have you on board and wishing us well - we really can do with all the support we can get! In my turn, I also wish England well, and I’ll leave it at that.

Have you actually read the many posts from Scottish people saying we support England? I haven't seen a single post saying the English are hated. Yes, there is rivalry but not hatred. Why are you so angry? I ask this genuinely.

And the Scot’s don’t hate the English … think you’re kinda proving the point

You claimed Scots “hate the English.” Every Scottish person who replied—including me—has said the opposite and backed it up with actual lived experience.

I’ve lived in England for over twenty years, I’m married to an English man, and my children are English. If you think that somehow supports your claim, then you’re not engaging with this discussion at even a basic level.

You were asked for evidence. You still haven’t produced any. Instead, you’ve shifted to inventing things about me because you can’t defend what you originally said. That isn’t debate. It’s evasion.

Have you actually read the many posts from Scottish people saying we support England?

Not one person has claimed Scots “hate the English.” There’s rivalry, yes, but not hatred.

My English and Scottish families holiday together, raise each other’s kids, and are godparents across both sides. If your “reality” can’t stretch far enough to include that, the limitation isn’t cultural — it’s you.

At this point, your rebuttals aren’t even landing. You’re reinforcing my point with every message. It’s like the lights are on, but nobody’s actually home.

If you’re confident in your claim, feel free to provide evidence. If not, pretending your assumptions are facts won’t fool anyone—it just shows you’re out of your depth. Anyway, here’s hoping the third “goodbye” and “see ya” is the one you finally manage to follow through on.

Here in the USA atm, really not liking the Scottish fans here! Loud, rude and really, really drunk, swearing and being dicks, letting the kids run amok because the football is on, about 15/20 families.. So not the whole of Scotland but letting down their country!

Seems to go completely against every other thing I’ve seen on social media about the Tartan Army in Boston. They’ve even decided to twin Boston with Glasgow and made haggis legal! Maybe as a thank you for the £30,000+ donated by the Army to local charities.

💯
England suppprters always think England is better than they really are. And there are many racists in the country so that doesn’t help with the attack on the black players.

The pundits are the worst at exaggerating England. The way they dismiss other nations is so arrogant and shameful.

However I like this squad and i’m looking forward to what they can do. I don’t think they’ll win it but hopefully they’ll go far.

Yes I think the pundits/media are usually the issue - bigging up England, acting as if it’s their right to win something.

the actual team themselves don’t act or talk arrogantly like that. I remember interviews during the Euros and thinking what a pleasant sensible bunch of young lads most of them seemed to be.

I always feel sorry for anyone who misses a penalty to lose a match. Whatever the team. Such a sickening moment for them and their team.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 19/06/2026 00:05

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 17/06/2026 11:40

Scotland isn’t defined by Rangers and Celtic, and pretending otherwise is just ignorance.

Every country has louts around derby matches — that’s not a Scottish problem, it’s a football problem. Living in England, I see firsthand how some people here show a level of bitterness toward Scotland that’s honestly embarrassing.

The Tartan Army is known worldwide for their good behaviour and the charity work they do while supporting their team. Yet there’s always someone — usually English — desperate to criticise them. It’s unfair, it’s outdated, and it says more about the critic than it does about Scotland.

We all know Rangers Celtic has a religious element. Actually Aberdeen Rangers can be pretty brutal too. I agree completely that loutish behaviour by a minority is a football problem found at all levels and across all countries.

The Tartan Army is unique, joyful and a pleasure to watch.

YABU … they don’t stand a chance and they hate England with a passion! Why would you want someone to win when they want nothing more than your country to lose.

Sometimes it is just a fun way to wind up a Sassenach. We don’t always mean it. Grin

This was in the late 80s and 90s.
i moved up from London and could not believe it. I had worked with people from everywhere, but in Aberdeen it was a different world.

Maybe it was just your sparkling personality

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 19/06/2026 00:16

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 17/06/2026 20:01

Using the 1977 Wembley incident as if it defines Scotland fans today is just outdated.

Football in the 70s was chaotic everywhere, and it’s simply not accurate to pretend that was some uniquely Scottish disgrace.

If we’re going to talk about fan behaviour, then we can’t ignore the far more serious and far more recent issues involving England supporters.

The Euro 2020 Wembley disorder, the Marseille clashes in 2016, and a long list of fines and sanctions over the years didn’t appear out of thin air.

That’s not an attack on anyone’s identity — it’s just acknowledging well‑documented events.

Meanwhile, the Tartan Army has spent decades building a reputation as one of the friendliest and most respectful travelling supports in Europe. Host cities praise them. UEFA praises them. Rival fans praise them.

That reputation exists because it reflects how the vast majority behave.

You’ve had a few bad encounters, and that’s fair enough. Everyone has with every fanbase. But using isolated personal experiences to paint Scotland fans as the problem, while overlooking the much larger and more recent issues elsewhere, isn’t a balanced comparison.

The reality today is straightforward: Scotland fans overwhelmingly travel well, behave well, and bring atmosphere rather than trouble.

That’s why there positive stereotype exists worldwide! #NoScotlandNoParty

England will naturally have more well‑known figures simply because its population is around ten times larger than Scotland.

But our wee country doesn’t need to tear others down to feel good about itself — we stand on our own merits.

Scotland doesn’t need to drag anyone else down to feel good about who we are.

I think I love you 😂
