To do a ten day holiday in europe with ryan air under Seat hand luggage only. I think I can do it but I have been met with FURIOUS resistance from people saying it’s impossible. Please tell me your best packing hacks for the smallest hand luggage. I can wash clothes six days in so that feels inmediately like only a six day holiday…. Help!

If you have to buy all the toiletries - and presumably throw them away - have you really gained much from bit just paying for another bag?
unfashionable but I love a wide thin scarf / pashmina - packs tiny, or you wear it, and it does lots of jobs

Yes. I wouldn’t go on holiday like this. What’s the point?! I love uk breaks too, so would do that instead if I could only afford an under-seat bag.

Some people like to see other countries. If you don't that's fine but is it that hard to understand not everybody likes the same things as you?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 16/06/2026 08:06

It’s just extra mean! Pay for luggage. Or use a decent airline! Do you like Michael O’Leary? Why support his empire?

Exactly. Once you've bought all your toiletries, flip flops, towel, adapter etc, you've probably saved hardly anything plus you've got the hassle of trawling round trying to find all this stuff for a reasonable price and the waste of leaving it all behind to be thrown away.

Are you travelling alone OP? IF not, could you share a hold bag with your travelling companion (on Ryanair, a 20 kg hold bag often costs hardly anything more than 10 kg in the cabin so much better value). Surely the cost of a bag is a small percentage of a 10 day holiday so worth the cost to not have a the hassle of worrying about going over your luggage allowance, having to buy things you already have at home, making do with a limited amount of clothes and needing to keep up with laundry when you're supposed to be on holiday.

If you can’t pay for a cabin bag, how can you afford things once you arrive? Unexpected costs etc? It does not sound like much fun at all. And I am just adding my opinion to a discussion. That’s how this place works!

People suggesting buying clothes and toiletries at the other end and then throwing them away, it sounds so wasteful.

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 16/06/2026 08:17

Also are you using a bag which properly maximises the space?

It’s the people suggesting spending £50 on pants, toiletries, swimwear and flip flops at your destination that you will then need to bin in over to ‘save £60’.

Lentilcakes · 16/06/2026 08:20

Sounds miserable AF! I have used a squishy small under seat but only for a weekend away. I’m not a big packer but don’t want to be washing knickers in a sink 🤦‍♀️ people saying buy coordinates and toiletries - that’ll be more expensive than paying for an overhead carry on!! If you don’t want to check in because of waiting for baggage reclaim then that’s a good compromise.
When we went away as a family we had 2 big cases between 4 of us and everyone had their carry on - although wasn’t Ryanair.
For some who say ‘do you love Michael O’Leary?’ - you can only fly Ryanair to certain airports.

Lastofthesummerwines · 16/06/2026 08:24

Wear your swimsuit on the plane under your clothes, then you could fit in another piece of clothing.

Whatalunatic · 16/06/2026 08:26

you have had loads of good advice - just wanted to add that I managed 7 nights in Spain as a size 28 woman (no longer - hurrah!) so my clothes were bigger than average! I did have to rinse through some underwear but that was all. Wear the heaviest things you're taking and work it back from there. I also did 5 nights in Lithuania at size 22 - that was harder 'cos it was colder and I needed jumpers but managed!

beigetriangle · 16/06/2026 08:27

foldie travel bag.

take minimal toiletries and buy at destination.
take 3 days worth of clothes and be clever sbout handwashing/airing clothes.

Which is fine, until she wants to go to the toilet......

I can't believe people go to this sort of hassle to save a few quid. But how about wearing a coat with decent pockets on the plane and putting some of your luggage in there?

RausageSoul · 16/06/2026 08:29

Honeyhonay · 15/06/2026 23:25

I just can’t imagine paying and making the effort to go on holiday and standing there washing my knickers in the sink multiple times in the week.
I mean, just why?
Why make it so miserable? Just pay for a bloody bag.

But you also get to wear your knickers around your neck in a pillow!

Or she could knot them together and wear as a scarf.

And an eye mask I guess! Saving 50p and getting a decent nap.

Hope they are clean on the way home after a week of sink rinsing. A wee guffy nap!

That you don't choose to pay for extra luggage doesn't mean you can't afford it. Could mean you prefer to spend money on something else. I nearly always travel with an underseat bag but I wouldn't say there's no point in paying for extra luggage if you want to.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 16/06/2026 08:36

Isn’t it amazing how cheap flights have completely messed up our common sense? We’ve become besotted with saving a bit of money, giving money to a very anti-customer Irish owner, and making decisions that we would never have done 40 years ago when flying was simple - you took a hold bag! The joy of retro flying!

ConstanzeMozart · 16/06/2026 08:37

Get one of those bags with a vacuum section.

ThreeStripeQueen · 16/06/2026 08:38

Stay in a naturist resort then you only need flip flops a towel and sunscreen.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 16/06/2026 08:39

Buy toiletries when you get there. Take a kindle. Use a dress for the evening then wear it next day during the day. One pair of sturdy flip flops and pack a light pair. Use a compression packing cube.

On the plane wear a cardigan and a wrap ( and a jacket if you want one) Wear a pair of light linen trousers under a dress. You can have a tiny cross body bag for passport, phone and headphones as long as you keep it on you.

But I'd probably just pay for an extra piece of hand luggage.

MrsShawnHatosy · 16/06/2026 08:42

Plan to buy as many items as possible at destination - toiletries obviously, swimwear/beach wear perhaps, sandals or flip-flops maybe, etc etc...

Do you then leave them all behind to go home?
