To think benefits need to be cut to fund increased spending on defence

This is absolutely necessary. Keir Starmer shouldnt have backed down the last time. But now with the current situation with Russia drastic steps need to be taken. We simply can't afford to sustain the current benefits bill with the armed forces so depleted. The money is needed to increase defence.

The benefits system in the UK is totally mad. People have got used to money being thrown at them while they stay persistently underemployed on part time hours and feel like they're entitled to do so because they have kids (or, more recently, dogs 🙄). The economy has inflated itself to fit what people are earning/being topped up by benefits, just like rental standards have inflated rent prices and now everyone's complaining at the cost of accommodation. That's the bit people don't understand when they go on about how "employers need to pay more" the minimum wage in this country is pure gold in the first place! The whole benefits thing is ridiculous and needs deleting and starting again. The country doesn't owe anyone a living, people need to cut their cloth. And ironically the low salaries in the military mean that a single parent in the military these days would likely be better off working part time in B+Q and claiming benefits. Make it make sense.

So you want benefits cut to make the economy smaller!?

Overthebow · 14/06/2026 20:37

I do think benefits needs an overhaul. It’s great we have a benefits system for those who really need it, but it’s too wide. Wage top ups from UC should only be for those working full time (which could be as little as 30 hours a week), part time working is a choice. PIP and DLA should be means tested, It’s ridiculous that households such as mine are eligible.

Need to stop free childcare/nursery hours for people who do not work

Sgurrdubh · 14/06/2026 20:42

Lastofthesummerwines · 14/06/2026 20:09

Or make companies pay proper wages so that people don't have to rely on benefits to top up their wages with uc!!! It's madness. We shouldn't have to claim benefits when we have a job!!!

This needs saying again!

wonderstuff · 14/06/2026 20:05

Or we could make Amazon and Starbucks pay their fair share of taxes?

They pay them..... What makes you think they dont.

Meanwhile everyone comes to England, claim fake asylum or just not work and have plenty of children....

MissyB1 · 14/06/2026 20:43

Oh yeah creating more poverty is absolutely a great idea 🤦‍♀️

bestcatlife · 14/06/2026 20:43

Why is it the responsibility of poor people to pay for defence?

shutmumsclub · 14/06/2026 20:44

Danikm151 · 14/06/2026 20:36

Live off UC for a month then tell us how much it should be cut by.
I work full time and get UC. It basically covers my childcare. Without UC I couldn’t go to work.
I pay more in tax and NI than I get in UC so essentially it’s like tax credits.

defence spending is already high but, like the NHS, the spending isn’t efficient or cost effective,

It doesn't bascislly cover your childcare.

You get a housing element, a adult person element, child element and a childcare element.

All those elements put together, minus your income....... And that's free money

Corianda · 14/06/2026 20:44

Benefits need to be cut to fund everything- NHS,education, defence

Lifelover16 · 14/06/2026 20:45

I agree the benefits system needs an overhaul, but there always seems to be money available when needed eg the £4.5 billion for new cycle tracks and footpaths.

wonderstuff · 14/06/2026 20:05

This and increase the taxes of the wealthy. The rich have become far richer over the last few decades.

PinkCatCushion · 14/06/2026 20:49

Instead of sending all our young people to die in a war, we simply need to put each warmongering country’s leaders into a stadium and let them fight each other to death - they’d soon think twice about starting wars then.
I bet Donald ‘Draft-dodger’ Trump/Fart would soon back down.

That is to benefit the children as they are then less likely to start school behind their peers. It could be more costly in the long run to take that away.

Larrythecatforpm · 14/06/2026 20:50

Yeah let’s reopen the work houses that includes everyone who gets a state pension too, since state pension makes up over 50% of the welfare bill.
Fabulous idea!

Wednesday505 · 14/06/2026 20:50

Utter nonsense, can people stop looking down, try looking up there's much more to be gained there than taking from the lowest earners, sick, unemployed, pensions etc.

Lemonfrost · 14/06/2026 20:51

MeinKraft · 14/06/2026 20:17

Yeah, fuck the kids of parents who aren’t able to work or who have been made redundant, let them starve. Think of the poor skint arms dealers!

This isn't representative of all benefit claimants. There are an awful lot of people who have made a conscious decision to opt out of contributing to society and see benefits as an income. These people should absolutely be targeted and benefits should cease.

Wednesday505 · 14/06/2026 20:51

Duvetdayneeded · 14/06/2026 20:16

Cut welfare benefits - spot on. Get people back to work. Only genuine cases should get benefits - but it’s become a choice and way of life for way too many. There’s been about a 55% increase in claims this past year also which is ridiculous.

Ridiculous

Come on, admit how much rent a single parent pays the MOD compared to how much they would pay BTLer? They absolutely would be worse off losing their nearly free houses

Larrythecatforpm · 14/06/2026 20:52

Doesn’t anyone remember that there was no “black hole” of finances like Reeves claimed? They absolutely do have the money for defence but choose not too.

Wednesday505 · 14/06/2026 20:53

caringcarer · 14/06/2026 20:18

Minimum wage has been put up year on year and above cost of inflation. It's harmful to businesses so the government has to try to strike a balance. My DS simply works more hours to up his wage.

Of course everyone can work extra hours, hey how about lowering the minimum wage to £5 an hour and then people can work 24 hours a day, would that make you happy?

Yes state pension should absolutely be means tested!

You clearly have no idea what living in the real world on a basic wage is like

Fine. Give us our decades of NI contributions back then.

In theory yes but any increase to the minimum wage will likely lead to more unemployment

Sgurrdubh · 14/06/2026 20:56

Before cutting benefits, how about investing in more tax inspectors, make sure that companies are paying as they should.

Why are offshore accounts allowed!?

Equalise tax from passive or unearned wealth with income tax.

Assess how much profit has been on the back of a company’s employees having to have low wages topped up by benefits. With a view to reclaiming it (nothing wrong with profit of course but how much is this costing in benefits?).
