To think benefits need to be cut to fund increased spending on defence

This is absolutely necessary. Keir Starmer shouldnt have backed down the last time. But now with the current situation with Russia drastic steps need to be taken. We simply can't afford to sustain the current benefits bill with the armed forces so depleted. The money is needed to increase defence.

Apparently they can't wait to tell you from what I've seen on here.

Or they overhear them in their gardens. Because us "scroungers" have weekly meetings in our gardens where we discuss our benefits.
Or we are in Wetherspoons at 8am and bragging about it too.

Why is it anyone on MN who goes on about benefit mum's with SUVs and tattoos, nails, going on 8 trips to the Maldives a year etc. seems to know the ins and outs of what those people are claiming.
So, what are they claiming? Have they showed you their UC journal? Their bank statements?

I am on UC and most of my social circle are. We rarely talk about benefits and what we get. We have more interesting things to discuss TBH.
So why are strangers with SUVs and gel nails telling you about their finances?

They probably don’t know the ins and outs, but they know the person doesn’t work, yet has the extensions, hair and nail, the desingna clothes…seen in the fancy car.

I think you missed the point about zero hour contracts. Get 4 hours work in a week, and you can't get a job elsewhere incase you get offered more hours... and if you turn them down you risk not getting more.
If you are in a cushy FT job then you are privileged because the job market out there right now is bloody awful.

I think you missed the point.
Nobody forces people to go on zero hours. Get a job which works for you. If there are none in your area - move. That's what millions of migrants do. They go after jobs. Nobody owns you a living unless you are severely disabled or care for such person.
No jobs available in your are is not an excuse.

Not working does not mean they are on benefits.
Why does anyone care?
I can't get worked up about what other people are doing at all. Life is too short. Water your own grass.

Oh yes, because someone with no job has the couple of £k needed to just up and move. BTW the rental market is also pretty shit too.
Tone deaf.

why does anyone care? probably because some of us pay for this. Because our taxes go up and up with no improvement of any services. Because every penny of income tax paid in this country goes on welfare, on funding people who don't work whilst many of them could.
So it is very much our own grass in any cases.

But use a little bit of critical thinking so we all can agree that benefits is less then wages right. So why would you think that someone earning less then you could afford these things if you can't is it that you're terrible with money or is it that its not actually true and its what the daily mail and reform government want you to think. Do you honestly believe someone relying solely on benefits is having multiple holidays a year, buying designer clothes driving around in brand new cars. Like really actually think about it

This, and those on welfare and leeching from those who work have the constant victim mentality that they have the worst time ever!!

@XenoBitch I have to jump through hoops daily at work & it’s exhausting to be continually scrutinised. At least you only have to do a meeting occasionally 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's nowhere near the same thing.

Just hope you only experience it in the work way, not the benefit way. Disability can occur to anyone over night. It did to me, literally overnight. .

it's ok that you don't understand. It's not OK to claim you have it worse.

Well they have more disposable income,
no clothes to buy for work
no transport for work
no child care to pay (we all know any free childcare doesn’t go to those who work)

In what jobs? There are 2.6 active job seekers for every vacancy out there. And not every vacancy is a full time job that will take someone on benefits. They include zero hour, MLM shit and ghost jobs where job sites just want your info.
And the people on benefits are also not accessing the same services you are either.
But that is a case of financial mismanagement within the powers that be. But it is easier to blame people on benefits though, even though we are feeling the same pinch as you.

Where is this vast amount of disposable income I'm supposed to have because I'm on benefits? Clearly I must be doing something wrong.

Yep, I don't see this in real life at all. The people I know on benefits struggle all the time. In my own circle, two are using food banks due to having their money cut. They are not showing up in an SUV with extensions and new nails. They are using their bus pass, and wearing worn out clothing.
It is just red top paper trope shite, and for all the people who claim to be in high paid jobs etc, they sure are gullible when it comes to believing what the press tells them.

how? How are you “feeling the same pinch”
when you don’t have to pay to get to work, have work related expenses, because you’re on benefits you have access to so much.
in Scotland those on “not in work” benefits, get free school meals, money for uniforms and extra money in school hols to replace the free school meals…how are they feeling the same pinch as those in min wage jobs?

When I worked, I was in scrubs. I was not paying for them.
Try harder.
I could also walk there.
I don't have kids.

Just means test state pensions, taking into account property value too.

UC mostly subsidises employers so they can under pay workers and keep them in precarity.

Whereas overall pensioners are the wealthiest generation in British history, those who aren’t will survive the means test.

Absolutely not, so those who have worked get fucked over to give more pension Credits to those who’ve never contributed? Nope!!

This, and those on welfare and leeching from those who work have the constant victim mentality that they have the worst time ever!!

Do you want to trade lives work my part time job but there is a catch you won't get to walk your kids down the aisle or meet your grandkids as I don't have a normal life expectancy. Do you want to take 50 plus pills a day that make you feel like shit. Do you want to spend half your life in hospital. Do you want to try multiple different drug trials in hope that something will work or repeated surgeries that have caused more harm then good do you want to have to regularly travel up and down the country to see specialists as you can't see the consultants locally. Do you want the dvla to take your driving license of you. Do you want to need over 12 hrs of sleep a day just to function. Do you want to never go on holiday again as no one will insure you and the couple of companies that will the insurance costs more then your holiday. Because il happily swap because a cushy 9 til 5 then spending evening and weekends enjoying life sounds great . Being able to actually book days of work for fun stuff as all my annual leave is used up on appointments any after that which there always is i have to take unpaid. Still want to swap because I do

How on earth is that relevant then? And am assuming you’ve paid towards nhs pension? You happy with the view of those on this thread that therefore you are no longer entitled to state payouts?

Absolutely not, so those who have worked get fucked over to give more pension Credits to those who’ve never contributed? Nope!!

Those who are wealthy, and have private pensions, and oversized valuable assets do not NEED a state pension.

Why should we subsidise that ?

Get rid.

Its the fact people seem to genuinely believe it. Like have they never actually stopped to realistically think about it

When I worked, I had a uniform provided and I also was in walking distance.
If you have commuting costs, then move closer. I bet that will get push back though.

My food costs are the same as someone working, and my bills are too. In fact, my bills are higher because I am home more.
I am still affected by a council wanting to change bin collections to monthly instead of fortnightly. I am still affected by less buses running, still affected by less police being about to respond to calls etc. Still affected by long waits for ambulances.

They don't because they don't actually know anyone on benefits. They just read about us in the paper.

Depends on which benefits you are talking about.
