DH and I disagree about Soap 😳

anotherdaytosmile · Yesterday 12:27

DH has put a fresh bar of soap out today, his trusty Imperial Leather. He thinks it’s a classy soap based on his childhood perspective in the late 1970s. I think it’s one step up from carbolic. I want Jo Malone soap 😢

AIBU - imperial leather is pure luxury
AINBU - what next, waxy toilet paper?

Ahh the good old Imperial Leather family soap. Usually with one of your dad’s pubes stuck in it. Sometimes interchanged with Camay, Zest or Shield. The 80s was the best time for soap.

That made me laugh.

Soap is what gets you properly clean. Hand wash and shower gels are far less effective. I always use soap (proper not dove etc) on under arms, feet etc. imperial leather is fine.

Edited

I much prefer soap as everything else comes in tons of plastic packaging that will take hundreds of years to biodegrade. I get the organic ones in paper wrappers.
We have to stop this disposable culture.

Is that a thing? I like the sound of that and am guessing it makes everything smell nice? Does it keep moths away too?

Yeah. It was for nice smell. We had them in every sock drawer etc. Like ever lasting airfreshener and when they stopped smelling they went by the sink for the original purpose.

HeyThereDelila · Today 12:36

I love Pears, Palmolive (reminds me of late DGM), and Coal Tar Soap (reminds me of my other late DGM!)

YABU OP.

He uses Dercos shampoo and Vanicream conditioner and then Dr Bronner soap on the body. He finds it doesn't make him itch. They are both available on Amazon. The coal tar was a bit harsh.

Thank you .
I have some of the liquid Dr Bronner soap , (almond is my favourite ) I fill one of those hollow plastic scrubby brush things and use in the bathroom. Smells lovely ,
It's 18 in1 use so safe for skin, laundry , cleaning ( great on the floor as I have cats and don't want them getting anything nasty on their paws )

Goes off to look up Amazon. for soap bars .

Me!

Me too! I like simple the best. It's a real pain when I go the dd1 or dd2's as they only have shower gel.

Radical idea: why don't you have TWO soaps on the go, then everyone's happy?

Not very radical it has been suggested at least a dozen times already.

My MIL used all simple stuff and her skin is amazing!

FatRosie · Today 13:12

@70isaLimitNotaTarget , isn't that just very expensive floor cleaner.

Venicelagoon · Today 13:15

I just love the post about the cat licking the bath ! Mine loves soapy skin too ! I cant stand my husbands Palmolive.....so I do understand the OP.

@70isaLimitNotaTarget , isn't that just very expensive floor cleaner.

It lasts ages and cleans well .
I only need a tiny drop so it works out good value .
I've got a steamer too for deep cleaning but a run round with a mop for quick cleans .

I don't think I'd use it on my skin but it says it works for that too.
I haven't used on laundry in the machine as it is really foamy but good for handwashing .

BaronessBomburst · Today 09:43

@TerfOnATrainRituals products are natural anyway and don't contain SLS etc.
Which one do you use on him? My favourite is Ritual of Aruveyda, which is rose scented. I quite like the cedar and orange range too but I forget the name.

It is Rituals of Karma, the turquoise one. Smells divine on him 😁

HarshbutTrue2 · Today 13:26

Soap is yukky and slimy.
I have used imperial leather and pears in the past. I also once had chanel soap - a pressie. I have also got some small posh bars of soap from hotels.

Since moving into the 21st century we use hand wash, shower gel and bath cream/oil/ bubbles.

If you want to be classy use rituals. They have a refill service. Carex also does refill bottles. I think imperial leather does hand wash too.

Shower gels, rituals and dove. Bath stuff: Rituals, Dove bubbly stuff and others. I think if I was splurging on Jo Malone I would prefer bath or shower oil to hand wash.

And yes, I know Dove isn't environmentally friendly. I apologise but I love it and it suits my delicate skin.

TroysMammy · Today 13:49

I wouldn't class it as luxury but I do like the clean smell of it. I no longer buy it because to me it's a man's soap. My partner uses Original Source mint and teatree shower gel which makes your bits feel like a polar bear has licked them 😁.

IamEarthymama · Today 13:51

I love bars of soap!
we were a Pears household growing up but then I fell for the shower gel hype.
However about 25 years ago I realised that my sore skin and outbreaks of psoriasis were caused by shower gel, washing up liquid, detergents.
so we are a eco laundry household and we use soap in the shower.
Like a pp I use persimmon soap for the nooks and crannies and olive oil soap for hands.

FatRosie · Today 13:55

@TroysMammy , How you know what your bits would feel like if a polar bear ...?

Try washing yourself with it. "Oo missus" 😁

FatRosie · Today 14:11

I have got some but it's not for my privates, I'll stick to soap thanks. Smile

I’m in the 21st century and use soap, it’s not slimy. I use a soap bag so it dries in that
I want to smell nice and shower gel doesn’t work in my armpits. I find being clean is classy

InterIgnis · Today 14:44

For a scented soap try also Le Labo and Diptyque. Both have longer lasting scent than Jo Malone, and Diptque especially will fill the whole bathroom.

My favorite soap is Turkish hammam soap, an olive oil one.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · Today 15:00

I think you're both far too posh. We use Lidl bar soap as I find IL does not lather.

JHound · Today 15:16

I use imperial leather - I like the smell and it does not irritate.

Never attempted Jo Malone but I assume it would be overly perfumed.

Squirrelsnut · Today 16:10

I make my own soap sometimes. It's pretty easy and you can make it absolutely perfect gor your skin, depending on the oils.
But I also love a browse in TKMaxx at the Italian soaps.
