What's hated on MN, but insanely popular in real life?

Disney World
Starbucks, Costa, Nero etc
Center Parcs
A sensible political stance
McDonald's

What else?

So being conservative is a sensible political stance? OK.

Eh?

I think you get a lot of polarised views on here whereas most people in real life are more moderate. Plus there's always tendency in some quarters not to like to be associated with popular things because popular = "common".
Take McDonald's as an example. If you believed what you read on here it should be deserted most of the time because it's terribly bad and the only people you will see in there have 17 feral children but only one tooth. Strange how they manage to stay in business really as so few people admit to buying food there! And there'll be even more criticism of anyone who has ever let their child eat a happy meal, with a picture being drawn of pasty, obese children who have never seen a fresh vegetable in their lives, unlike the critics' children who live on quinoa and kale and wouldn't even recognise the McDonald's logo.
Of course those stereotypes do exist, but not in the numbers you'd think from posts on here. There are plenty of people who eat a wide range of things but get a McDonald's or similar once in a while when they're in a hurry, out late or travelling etc. Is it a particularly healthy choice? Should you buy it every day? No of course not. But once in a while it's not going to kill you and it is often quick and convenient. But it has become demonised so nobody likes to admit that they went through the drive through on the way home from a late activity or work once or twice last month which is probably a much more common scenario than either "wouldn't even know what it is" or "practically lives on the stuff".

I don't see Mumsnet poster as absurdly liberal anymore. In the past yes, but now so many posts are to the extreme right and probably more a reflection of wider societies direction with the openness of hostility to migrants and people on benefits.

Yep - and at risk of throwing a lighted match onto petrol, I think the feminism forum skewed it right (ironically) when the whole GC thing shifted from being a critique of gender roles and how those impact women (the traditional second-wave feminist view that women are oppressed because of their sex) to align with hard-right conservatives who hate trans people but also hate women having agency over their own bodies, socialism, and brown people.

As someone that is absurdly liberal myself I have actually noticed the opposite. There are a lot of very right wing posters and views on here and it’s been getting worse of late.

I think MN used to lean quite liberal but not anymore.

I agree. It’s massively right wing. Partly the Reform crowd that have infiltrated all social media joined recently and partly the American contingent on here that has become much more prevalent in the last couple of years.

Weddings.

Most people I know make every effort to go to a wedding - one of my DDs got married last year (midweek, no less) and everybody who was invited came to it, friends and family.

Mumsnet is not 'absurdly liberal.' As someone who leans left, I find it pretty right-wing most of the time, with an explosion of horribly Reformy views recently. But clearly there are people on here who think that makes me a communist.

There are people of all political stripes on Mumsnet. There are indeed some central casting metropolitan liberals. There are True Blue Tories, there are Reform supporters, there are Corbynite lefties, Greens, you name it.

It really irritates me when people say its "all liberals" as if there were some editorial committee of the great and the good. It's not a newspaper.

Well, regarding Brexit, it seems that some who voted Leave have regretted their choice. Especially as there seems to have been some misinformation in the publicity eg £350 million for the NHS or whatever it was.

Also, it was a close vote even at the time, with some people not voting. So there are an awful lot of people about who either didn’t vote Leave back in 2016, or regret their vote now.

Complaining about your mum or dad, because someone will come along to say you're lucky to have yours & what I'd give for my mum/dad to be here so they can feed my kids shit/go against my rules/talk about me behind my back.

Complaining about anyone who gives free childcare. Apparently this gives the person free reign to do whatever they want in your house and you either have to put up with it or pay for childcare
