Where is everyone doing their supermarket shop from?

Hi,

I usually tend to do an online Asda shop but it’s costing a lot more recently. I used to go to Aldi but then would need to go to Asda anyway for a few brand things they didn’t have (that I couldn’t find a decent substitute for).

Recently Asda prices have also soared and I’m just curious as to whether it’s worth switching back to doing the bulk of it from Aldi and then going to Asda for the branded bits I need. With that being said I do have a toddler and it used to get tedious going to two different supermarkets so I started doing an online Asda shop for convenience but can tell a big difference in prices and their rewards system is rubbish.

Where everyone does their food shop from and how much they spend (if you don’t mind sharing!)

Thanks

Ocado, there are very rarely any subs and I like the ranges they stock. But we buy our meat from the butchers because we have some really excellent local ones with incredible meat.
I went back to Tescos a few years back when they jumped into bed with M&S because I felt their whole selling point was a whole lot of pre-prepared and pre-packaged foods, lots of UPF stuff and we don’t eat that way but their fruit and veg has always been way better than Tescos and I went back to ocado at the start of the year. It’s absolutely fine.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 10/06/2026 22:34

Tesco online.

I like their fruit and veg which is the most important thing for me.

BadBadCat · 10/06/2026 22:35

Ocado, shopping online is much easier and you can keep a track on your total and price comparisons so much more easily.

ElvirRamcic · 10/06/2026 22:38

Tesco, mainly because there are two quite close to us. I prefer Sainsbury’s but it’s more awkward to get to.

I buy meat from the local butcher and fish from the local fishmonger.

I do make the occasional visit to M&S Food, but only for odds and ends, and treats.

StarDolphins · 10/06/2026 22:41

I usually do a mix of Waitrose and Ocado and some stuff from Aldi but I find Aldi really expensive now and don’t like the quality. However, I want to Morrisons last week as we were near there and I got tomato’s and a bag of salad and a jar of mustard and was very impressed, toms and salad really fresh and comparable with Waitrose and a lot cheaper. Plus the mustard had no nasties in it and much less processed than the one I get in Waitrose so I’m going to start getting more from Morrisons I think.

WorthySloth · 10/06/2026 22:44

Tesco scan as you go for my big shop although I tend to use the smaller local Tesco which has less distractions. Morrisons for top ups because it’s walking distance.

I get 15% off at Morrisons and either 10 or 15% off Tesco depending on where it is in the pay cycle as my husband works at Morrisons and daughter works at Tesco.

Booboobagins · 10/06/2026 22:47

I do a mix...

Lidl/Aldi for basics, M&S/Ocado for main, Morrisons occasionally and Farm Foods for frozen fish and for the dogs, frozen meat cos it's cheaper than pets at home raw food 😜

I'll sometimes bag tesco but that's rare tbh.

YourWinter · 10/06/2026 22:52

Main weekly shop in Morrisons, I like the loyalty scheme, it has a good butchery and fish range (though sadly not wild Alaskan salmon). I can get a variety of bones there to make bone broth for the dogs. I like their Californian sourdough, tiger bloomers and salt and pepper bloomers. They stock (whole) milk from Graham’s dairy. Their yellow sticker reductions are haphazard but can be really good. They’re near Home Bargains, where I get toiletries, paracetamol and hay fever tablets, bird food, poo bags, chia and flax seeds, and Graham’s butter, and near Just For Pets, where I get raw dog food and natural chews.

Then a small shop either at Waitrose, for my preferred cat litter, salmon, cheddar, or Aldi, for Greek yogurt, organic apple cider vinegar, and laundry powder, and next to M&S for excellent instant coffee. Or Tesco if I’ve timed it for the reductions, I get some of their products price matched to Aldi, don’t rack up many Clubcard points but it’s worth getting some. I go to a Sainsbury’s about once a month or so. I don’t like Asda at all, and Lidl is both a longer drive, and grim compared to our small Aldi.

I don’t like grocery shopping online, so probably not much help!

NC780 · 10/06/2026 22:54

Mostly a combination of Waitrose or Ocado and our local refill shop (for various food pantry items, cleaning materials, most toiletries - this really brings costs down, especially since we replaced lots of cleaning items with spirit vinegar and started using bar soap instead of hand soap and shower gel!). We also get an Oddbox delivery for fruit and veg so we plan around that.

Barney16 · 10/06/2026 22:57

Ocado. It's brilliant. The delivery people are wonderful, never substitute anything and they price match. Fruit and veg are v good quality.

justjuggling · 11/06/2026 01:18

Online Tesco for main shop which I tend to do every 8 days. Few nice bits from Waitrose on a Friday so we have some treats for the weekend and generally avoid top ups.

Meadowfinch · 11/06/2026 01:27

Dried and tinned goods, fruit & veg and dairy from Tesco, our closest large supermarket.
Meat from the village butcher.
I make all our bread, ordering wholemeal flour in 16kg sacks from Wessex Mill.

I shop once a week, no top-ups. I spend about £60 a week for two of us.

ExOptimist · 11/06/2026 01:29

Do the big shop at Sainsbury's in store every couple of weeks. It's only a couple of years old, it's got wide aisles, great parking and never crowded, even at Christmas. I often go about 6.30 to 7pm and there are excellent reductions such as half price meat, bread for 25p etc so if I see them I get a few for the freezer. Their veg is very good quality and variety and they sell free range chicken and outdoor bred pork.

I used to do my shopping at Tesco which is near the Sainsbury's but it is always heaving and the parking is terrible. There's a Tesco express in my village which I use for top ups, it's fine although everything is a more expensive than at a large store.

I go to Aldi once a year at Christmas because the past few years they've done an excellent free range chesham bronze turkey which has been delicious, not cheap though, costs 70 quid!

OneThreadOnlybyN · 11/06/2026 01:34

Tesco - online home delivery

veg is great & lasts ages. They give 'use by' dates online & let you know on delivery if something has a shorter use by than stated on website so you can return it to the driver. Refund if you weren't told when it was delivered.

I have used them at least 8 years & had very few issues. The few I did have were sorted to my satisfaction & they've gone out of their way for me when I was admitted to hospital & when I came home.

they price match. But the quality is better.

OhThePotential · 11/06/2026 02:48

Marks and Spencer once a week, costs between £70 - £90 for two adults. A top up shop of milk/fruit etc from Tesco once in between, another £20.

Things have gone up a lot but with a few adjustments to what we buy we’ve kept the amount we pay about the same for the last few years.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/06/2026 03:05

Sainsburys
Lidl
Occasionally Aldi (bit further away)
Occasionally Waitrose online

DilemmaDelilah · 11/06/2026 05:08

At the moment, Morrisons as delivery is still free for NHS workers. However, as my delivery the day before yesterday was 5 hours late with only one update, when it was 3/4 hour late, I am rethinking that. They also substituted frozen jumbo whole tail scampi with frozen potato waffles.... 🙄

I occasionally use Ocado - I like their products and rarely, if ever, get any substitutions. Also Morrisons no longer does a reduced fat sour cream and chive dip (I use it to make coleslaw) and M&S do, so we can order than from Ocado. We top up with fresh fruit and veg at least once a week, usually from Lidl, and I like Lidl's low GI brown bread, or Sainsbury's taste the difference multigrain, so if we need bread between shops we get it from there.

ForWiseRoseCat · 11/06/2026 05:20

Sainsbury's, Tesco and Aldi for my main shop (whichever takes my fancy and depending on what I need). Waitrose for veg (they still sell potatoes and carrots loose) and they have a deli counter. The farm shop for fancy cheese. Tesco for bread.

HoraceCope · 11/06/2026 05:24

tesco
sainsbury <top ups> and waitrose <for specifics>, odd thing from asda, less now they dont have any rewards, occasional from lidl
waitrose now have a reward app and their plants are really good

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 11/06/2026 05:26

Mix of Aldi, Asda and farmfoods mainly.

Farmfoods have some amazing deals, 2 tubs of fage Greek yogurt is £5. They have mu extra strong cheese for 99p etc. It's always worth a mooch !

suki1964 · 11/06/2026 05:34

Lidl for the main shop

Tesco for the bits Lidl dont stock plus any club card offers that make sense to buy

Every few weeks I will go to Sainsburys for a handful of items that only Sainsbury sell and whilst Im in the vicinity I do a Marks and Spencers sweep of the YS and meal deals, plus their West Country cheddar which is to die for and is as cheap as chips

If Im in our town centre , Ill have a dander around home bargains and Savers

And surprisingly the local spar. Their special offers are very very good , Im still working through the Branston beans I got last year - 4 cans at £1.50

Nat6999 · 11/06/2026 05:40

I use Ocado, I honestly don't find it much more expensive than Sainsbury's & love that I can buy M & S food online. I also love the fact that they still bag the shopping, being disabled it is so much easier than having to bag everything up at the door. I sometimes will do a top up shop on Deliveroo from Sainsbury's if I forget something & thankfully this does come ready bagged.

FrenchT0ast · 11/06/2026 05:55

Sainsbury and M&S for some fruit when going in person. Waitrose( next to no subs, great offers, easy to use) and Riverford online normally.

hattie43 · 11/06/2026 07:25

Waitrose for main shop. M & S for treats .
Aldi for bulk buying of dustbin liners , washing powder , washing up liquid .
Butternut Box delivery for dogs .
Im very lucky as we have all the supermarkets close by except Morrisons

Bikenutz · 11/06/2026 07:28

I use a wholesaler who delivers. I don’t use supermarkets. The downside is that you need space to store the goods - for example, most cans come in cases of 12, and there’s a minimum spend. Some people split a delivery with friends.
