Where is everyone doing their supermarket shop from?

Hi,

I usually tend to do an online Asda shop but it’s costing a lot more recently. I used to go to Aldi but then would need to go to Asda anyway for a few brand things they didn’t have (that I couldn’t find a decent substitute for).

Recently Asda prices have also soared and I’m just curious as to whether it’s worth switching back to doing the bulk of it from Aldi and then going to Asda for the branded bits I need. With that being said I do have a toddler and it used to get tedious going to two different supermarkets so I started doing an online Asda shop for convenience but can tell a big difference in prices and their rewards system is rubbish.

Where everyone does their food shop from and how much they spend (if you don’t mind sharing!)

Thanks

Ocado. I was a Sainsbury’s in person shopper for years but their product expiry dates were too short and they didn’t have everything I needed in store. Tried Ocado and liked that everything has a minimum 6 days expiry dates and very rarely are there subs - just 2 items in 3 months. Cost wise it’s the same as Sainsbury’s and I’m loving the food. I do think the me of five years ago would be aghast at how much we now spend on the weekly shop now though.

Happyjoe · 10/06/2026 21:56

For branded or heavy stuff I use Ocado. I sat down once and compared prices of things like baked beans & cat food and it was the same as the tesco or sains down the road - I think sains was slightly more expensive. Ocado seem to have a lot of offers too as well as a huge choice of things. Their cat food selection is 600-700% larger than going to Tesco.

But I prefer to shop around for fresh items, so will pop to any of the supermarkets for bread or vegetables as I need them but handy just having a basket, rather than trolley and nip in and out. I am not a fan of Aldi or Lidl as what I have tried hasn't been all that nice. Looks nice but the taste not so and didn't keep.

Once our new home is ready to move into (one day!), I am gutted. Ocado don't deliver there.

Norfolklass2428 · 10/06/2026 22:00

I use Ocado, as I hate having to physically go and shop in a supermarket. Sometimes Sainsbury's online I have delivery passes for both of them. I also buy meat from the butcher.

I find shopping online allows me to keep track of what I am spending with our food shop going up week on week.

Meal planning is pain, but I find it saves money because I only buy what we need.

I have never had any issues with Ocado own brand products or delivery. The quality is very good.

I have online deliveries from all the other supermarkets, which have been hit and miss. I always go back to Ocado.

Paisleybuddy · 10/06/2026 22:02

Ocado. I find I only buy what’s on my list as I’m not in the shop so not tempted by offers etc.
I get meat from the local butchers and fruit & veg from the local greengrocers.

Sulgari · 10/06/2026 22:03

Waitrose. I use the vouchers and the multi buy deals and the essentials range. Great pricing and can get everything. It all gets eaten too, as good stuff, so no waste

PShelp · 10/06/2026 22:04

£100 budget for Ocado, arriving on a Friday night, £25 top up budget for Lidl usually on a Tues. Milk is delivered separately about £9 per week. We're a family of four, no pets and this includes all toiletries, washing stuff etc. No alcohol.

ToffeePennie · 10/06/2026 22:06

Lidl. For everything, except shampoo and conditioner as I’m a curly girl

BognorRegenia · 10/06/2026 22:07

Allergy home here too and I just stopped bothering with Aldi / Lidl as they don't cater for us at all.

Tesco is my go to.

I like Ocado for organic fruit/veg and m&s bits, plus they rarely give substitutes, but they ain't cheap.

Mine is a family of 4, 3 guinea pigs and an autistic child who is fussy with food.
£85 covers everything

I have two guineas. They cost me a fortune

user1494050295 · 10/06/2026 22:09

I shop at m and s for meat and veg and fruit. You pay a bit more for the fruit but it really lasts the whole week.

DamonFoxPackingUpNorthernSoul · 10/06/2026 22:10

Asda+staff discount 15%

Blueeyedmale · 10/06/2026 22:12

A mix between Asda and Morrisons sometimes farmfooods as they have some great deals on frozen foods Gosport pretty much has every supermarket but doesn't have a Sainsbury's which is sad as I like some of their stuff and seems pointless driving to Fareham for few bits

ChachiChichi · 10/06/2026 22:13

I've cut down on big supermarket shops(Morrison's usually) and have been using my local co-op as the prices have often been cheaper, they regularly have promos on loo roll and tea bags etc so even pick up a few big items.

Boxingshibes · 10/06/2026 22:14

Sainsbury's for most items, meat veg, staple foods, cat litter.cheaper than aldi with nectar. Iceland for frozen, home bargains for pet food.
Amazon for nespresso like pods - 100 fir about £12 on subscription.

EnoughRain · 10/06/2026 22:15

In person - M&S. Online - Ocado.

FolioQuarto · 10/06/2026 22:15

Waitrose, M&S, Sainsburys, Morrisons.

They're not the cheapest but we don't buy meat or alcohol so that is an automatic saving. Waitrose is best for fruit and veg, especially if you don't want a pack. I have bought one carrot, one mushroom, one shallot in the past if that is all I need.

I like going to different supermarkets on holiday, anything from Lidl to Booths.

pinkpony88 · 10/06/2026 22:17

I use Sainsbury’s and shop online. Been doing that for over 15 years so I’m pretty stuck in my ways now 🤭
I use a local butcher for meat and also pop to M&S for bits I fancy during the week.

Mindia · 10/06/2026 22:18

A mixture of Waitrose, Asda, M&S. Stuff like loo rolls, cans of Coke, cleaning stuff comes from Amazon.

FolioQuarto · 10/06/2026 22:19

Waitrose still put proper lids on their hummus.

That is my wanky pronouncement for the day 😂

ManyShapesOfPasta · 10/06/2026 22:20

Mainly Sainsbury's, sometimes Asda.

Unescorted · 10/06/2026 21:09

Aldi / Lidl for most of the groceries. Butcher for the prime cuts, in season vegetable from the local market / village vegetable shop , fish from the fish van. Random things from the Chinese, Indian and Persian shops on the way into town.

Very occasionally - Tesco or Morrisons. Sainsbury's if I want to use the car park conveniently located for the hospital.

I am retired and appreciate that not everyone has the time to use loads of different shops.

When I retire i plan to do exactly that

DeathMetalMum · 10/06/2026 22:24

Aldi/Tesco and the odd bit from Asda/Lidl all nearby within 10 mins on the same shopping estate. Have 10% staff discount from Tesco but some products are better quality or value from Aldi.

JaceLancs · 10/06/2026 22:26

I do Aldi or Lidl first - then carry on and get rest of shop in Sainsbury’s or Tesco - I like to alternate
Where I live all are near enough
I dislike Morrisons and Asda and can’t afford Waitrose or Booths for a full shop

TheyGrewUp · 10/06/2026 22:28

Tesco or Sainsburys for most things; Waitrose for a certain beer for DH and to see what's on offer on the meat/fish counter.

I spend £150 to £180 for two of us, includes all cleaning stuff and toiletries.

Aldi is on the wrong side of the bypass, Lidl is awful and I detest our local Asda which always seems scruffy and the staff are unhelpful. I would make myself like them if I had to.
