Where is everyone doing their supermarket shop from?

Hi,

I usually tend to do an online Asda shop but it’s costing a lot more recently. I used to go to Aldi but then would need to go to Asda anyway for a few brand things they didn’t have (that I couldn’t find a decent substitute for).

Recently Asda prices have also soared and I’m just curious as to whether it’s worth switching back to doing the bulk of it from Aldi and then going to Asda for the branded bits I need. With that being said I do have a toddler and it used to get tedious going to two different supermarkets so I started doing an online Asda shop for convenience but can tell a big difference in prices and their rewards system is rubbish.

Where everyone does their food shop from and how much they spend (if you don’t mind sharing!)

Thanks

I use Ocado, I find it easier to keep an eye on the total using online shopping and I like Ocado as you hardly get any subs!

I did an experiment at the start of the year, I did an online shop at every supermarket buying pretty much the same thing. I was so so surprised the cheapest was Sainsbury’s!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/06/2026 20:35

I'm in the same boat! Just pissed off at giving money to asda and getting nothing on rewards!

I combine sainsburys, tesco and aldi! At least tesco and sainsburys reward you a bit!

I'll pop to asda for specific things on sale, like 30cans of coke zero for 8.75, and then check out their discount section, but otherwise I've moved on!

Forgot to mention I do the weekly top ups at my local Lidl and although I can see that their prices have also gone up (I guess that’s just across the board) their rewards system has been great as points build up quite quickly and can be redeemed for money off vouchers (Asda no longer does this)

I do Tesco.

Aldi & Lidl are vile, and I don’t like the quality of anywhere else.
Sainsbury’s is too far away and I can’t afford Waitrose.

user2466 · 10/06/2026 20:38

@Favouritefruitsthats very interesting. Did you buy own brand products from Sainsbury’s or branded products? I don’t mind own brand products but for certain things (fairy pods, fairy liquid etc) I get branded.

We do Aldi in the car for bulk stuff - oats, cereals, biscuits, loo roll, pasta, rice, some fruit and veg, pulses, oils, maple syrup, nuts etc. as much cheaper.
then Waitrose on foot for ‘fresh’ deli type stuff and nice ready meals.
they probably balance each other out in terms of overall cost.

user2466 · 10/06/2026 20:39

@mumofoneAloneandwell I know! Asda’s previous reward system was decent. They also did blue light discounts for a while too but it’s since stopped and you spend so much money and come out with hardly anything!

I do the vast majority in Lidl, with the odd bits from Tesco.

Loulou4022 · 10/06/2026 20:40

Lidl as I hate food shopping and it’s a small store so I can be in and out in 20 mins! I get a bit naffed off though that a lot of their stuff has short use by dates.

a bit of both really, probably 50/50. Brands such as Coca Cola and Heinz ketchup but Sainsbury’s own brands for things like pizzas and fresh soups.

user2466 · 10/06/2026 20:43

Forgot to mention one of the main reasons I can’t stick to Lidl or Aldi alone is because my daughter has a dairy allergy and although Lidl and Aldi do have some dairy free options, I find the range better generally in the bigger supermarkets

I buy most stuff at Aldi with a trip to Morrisons every couple of weeks for a few bits, and the odd trip to the health food shop/international shop for pulses and spices. Love Aldi as I can be in and out in under 15 mins.

user2466 · 10/06/2026 20:44

@Loulou4022 yes one thing I hate about Lidl is the food goes off quickly! Every time I buy potatoes they start to bruise deeply within a day or two. SO annoying.

Lidl all day long. I save about 30 quid on my weekly shop rather than Tescos. Used to get my booze from tescos on same shop. There's plenty of choice in Lidl.

gingercat02 · 10/06/2026 20:46

I only do online, you aren't tempted by offers or random shit you don't need.
We use morrisons, they do free delivery for NHS.

Cioccoholic · 10/06/2026 20:47

Tesco! I am subscribed to the £7.99 a month scheme that gives me 10% off a £200 shop twice a month, so when I’m organised I save £32 a month plus clubcard discounts and points.

For top ups I use my local Morrisons.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 10/06/2026 20:48

Tesco for big items and savings. Waitrose and M&S for everything else.

I think that applies to most places these days. Asda and Tesco are no better - my local Tesco barely has any fresh fruit or veg these days - unless you like to focus on a tomato and banana diet.

Buscobel · 10/06/2026 20:51

I prefer to see what I’m buying and check best before dates. Aldi is the quickest to get round and there are two reasonable ones near us. The local butcher for a treat and occasional Sainsbury’s or Tesco.

tillyandmilly · 10/06/2026 20:54

Tescos for household items and some vegan food - Marks and Spencer for weekend treats - I don’t like Lidl or Aldi as their fruit and vegetables are poor quality -

untamedheart · 10/06/2026 20:56

Aldi. No issues with fruit and veg, mine is a busy, well stocked immaculate store
I do an occasional shop elsewhere for Sainsburys gherkins, Lancashire farm Greek yoghurt and cottage cheese

Ocado and topping up from Tesco/m&s

DysonHoover · 10/06/2026 21:00

I was a die hard Lidl shopper but they pissed me off when they changed the Lidl plus scheme. Still go there for some things like the big bags of rice and coffee beans, but I've been experimenting with home delivery from various places. I really like ocado and there are decent discounts on the first few shops. Never had subs and the shopping comes in bags. Plus they price match and give you a coupon for the difference. Sainsburys is second choice for home delivery

PauliesWalnuts · 10/06/2026 21:04

Dairy and prawns - Lidl.
Fruit, veg, meat, fish - local market (I live near a really good northern proper market)
Everything else - Sainsbury’s.

Heardy · 10/06/2026 21:05

I also hate shops that are so big they take ages to get around. I usually go to Waitrose but once a month go to Sainsbury’s for the things like shampoo etc which are cheaper there.
