Where is everyone doing their supermarket shop from?

Hi,

I usually tend to do an online Asda shop but it’s costing a lot more recently. I used to go to Aldi but then would need to go to Asda anyway for a few brand things they didn’t have (that I couldn’t find a decent substitute for).

Recently Asda prices have also soared and I’m just curious as to whether it’s worth switching back to doing the bulk of it from Aldi and then going to Asda for the branded bits I need. With that being said I do have a toddler and it used to get tedious going to two different supermarkets so I started doing an online Asda shop for convenience but can tell a big difference in prices and their rewards system is rubbish.

Where everyone does their food shop from and how much they spend (if you don’t mind sharing!)

Thanks

@mumofoneAloneandwell I know! Asda’s previous reward system was decent. They also did blue light discounts for a while too but it’s since stopped and you spend so much money and come out with hardly anything!

You can buy vouchers via the blue light app so at the moment you get 3.5% discount

Aldi / Lidl for most of the groceries. Butcher for the prime cuts, in season vegetable from the local market / village vegetable shop , fish from the fish van. Random things from the Chinese, Indian and Persian shops on the way into town.

Very occasionally - Tesco or Morrisons. Sainsbury's if I want to use the car park conveniently located for the hospital.

I am retired and appreciate that not everyone has the time to use loads of different shops.

A mix of Aldi and Asda, it pisses me off all the time how much my food shop costs, it’s doubled in the last few years.

Netcurtainnelly · 10/06/2026 21:14

Lidl, Asda. Mainly.

HarrietofFire · 10/06/2026 21:16

I get Sainsbury’s delivery with a midweek pass for £4 a month. They do Aldi price match on all the basics and I shop carefully for the Nectar offers. Veg from all supermarkets has no shelf life these days though so I buy that in the local Morrisons on the day I need it and while I’m there I get mince because the Sainsbury’s vacuum pack is just awful.

shellyleppard · 10/06/2026 21:17

I do an online shop with Morrisons. The main reason is they still provide shopping bags and will deliver it to the kitchen for me. Iceland and Tesco are bag free and I have to empty the crates by the door. Difficult when you have arthritis. So yes to Morrisons for their helpful staff.
Also the delivery pass is very cheap for the whole year and the minimum basket spend is £25.
Tesco and Iceland are £50 and £45 each!!

If I have to go, it's a mixture of Tesco and the Co-Op... because they are the only supermarkets within a reasonable distance. I've started buying some branded items from Amazon, because it's so much cheaper than the Clubcard prices. Oh, and sometimes I get groceries through the 'Too Good To Go' app if I can get there before the shop closes.

Limth · 10/06/2026 21:20

Main shop from Iceland. They have really good quality meat, fruit and vegetables.

Their tins are really cheap.

And they obviously do amazing food for a Saturday night beige bonanza. Their take away range is the best of all the supermarkets I've tried - closest to an actual take away

There's a few things they don't sell that I want each week so I do a top up shop at Morrisons.

I get a few things from specialist shops once a month - good quality garlic, cheese, tinned fish.

Turnedtochaos · 10/06/2026 21:20

I’ve shopped at Asda for years but decided to swap to Aldi last week!

Really annoyed with how much Asda has increased prices and I’ve earned 11p in rewards in the past few months.

Hoping to save at least a few hundred a month. Currently hitting £200 a week!

Sartre · 10/06/2026 21:21

Aldi, branded bits from Tesco, also go to home bargains for toiletries once a month.

tarheelbaby · 10/06/2026 21:23

I live very near to a 'flagship' Sainsbury's. I do nearly all my food shopping there, in person. This week, I noticed some 'price matched with Aldi' wine and it was nearly 1/2 price!

There's also a big Tesco nearby and I've tried it but I always have to 'mop up' at the Sainsbury's and most of the Tesco own-brand recipes (e.g. potato salad, 'finest' sausages, in-store bakery bread) are not to my taste (too spicy, too garlicky, etc) so I stick to Sainsbury's.

Friends tell me it's cheaper elsewhere compared to Sainsbury's, but going to multiple shops is a false economy (waste of time) for me. Sometimes, in passing, I call into Waitrose for one or two favourites but overall I find the selection is smaller and the prices higher. I couldn't do a 'big' shop there b/c they just don't have the range and the branded items I can check are deffo more expensive. (Years ago, a colleague's husband banned her from Waitrose and they saved £50+/month)

An auntie has several nectar cards in slightly different names and used to rotate them b/c the best offers are when they think you aren't shopping. So only using each nectar card occasionally, generated better offers for her on whichever card she's used least recently.

SP2024 · 10/06/2026 21:23

Aldi. I also get a few odd things from Tesco or Sainsbury’s they don’t have (thinking Tabasco, Calgon tablets) and fruit top ups as it’s on the way home from work. So gutted Aldi have stopped selling the oaty bars!

ToffeeCrabApple · 10/06/2026 21:24

Sainsburys and get it delivered

BotterMon · 10/06/2026 21:28

Ocado with top ups from local M&S and farm shops. Meat from local farmers.

I do love going to Lidl once a month or so as they do so much European stuff that costs a fortune at Ocado. We never buy alcohol or wine in the UK.

DancingInTheMoonlights · 10/06/2026 21:34

Aldi mainly and then Tesco if I can’t be bothered to do a shop, I will get an online delivery but buy only the Aldi price match products so I’m only paying the price of a delivery and that’s worth it if I’m feeling lazy.

There are also certain things that I need that I can’t get from Aldi - more niche things - so would go to Tesco for those.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 10/06/2026 21:35

We do sainsburys or occasionally Tesco.

The cheap fruit and veg from sainsburys is mostly really disappointing, I think lidl and Aldi are better but shopping online is so much more convenient

Putmedownfor5shagger · 10/06/2026 21:35

Mostly Waitrose with bits from Tesco and M and S too.

I know what's best in each and the best prices so I dont find my costs have changed that much. We do have to do a bit of supermarket juggling but they're all local and its ok.

DamnBuster · 10/06/2026 21:38

Tesco for basics and M&S for fruit, veg and meat.

Londonrach1 · 10/06/2026 21:40

Tesco and lidl. Asda and sainsburys are so expensive only the rich can shop there. No nearby Aldi sadly so it's a tesco and lidl for me

wendy1288 · 10/06/2026 21:43

Ocado, they price match tesco for lots of products and also have a really good well priced own range. Then I can also splash out on some nice m&s treats for the weekend

Happyjoe · 10/06/2026 21:47

user2466 · 10/06/2026 20:38

@Favouritefruitsthats very interesting. Did you buy own brand products from Sainsbury’s or branded products? I don’t mind own brand products but for certain things (fairy pods, fairy liquid etc) I get branded.

Ah, that's where we differ. For household stuff I buy supermarket own mainly, so much cheaper and doesn't tend to be tested on animals. Win win in my book :-)

WinterNightStars · 10/06/2026 21:48

Aldi for pretty much everything - ours is quite a new store, clean & well stocked. B&M / Home Bargains for toiletries etc. Asda/Tesco for odd bits we can’t get at Aldi. Only 2 of us but save around 30% overall.

Nsky62 · 10/06/2026 21:50

Mainly Lidl, bulk eco cleaning online, most meat butchers, I don’t drive, cat and I.
If a bulk shop online Tesco, expensive if no cleaning or meat

Comefromaway · 10/06/2026 21:51

It varies between Sainsbury’s & Aldi as they are both in my town.

I can’t always get everything from Aldi and we also use Sainsbury’s for the pharmacy & dry cleaning.

Every so often we drive to the next town and go to Morrisons & we sometimes call to Tesco on the way back from somewhere.

occasionally we will go to Asda as there is an Asda near to where father in law lives.
