What popular places are overrated?

Following on from another thread, what places do you consider overrated that are popular?

Hotel Chocolat = over priced, at best average tasting, would much rather Cadbury's at a fraction of the price.

Amorino = our local one gets packed, as in queue's outside the shop packed. Over priced, very average ice cream, that they seem to be able to charge a premium for because you can mix flavors and it's a cue little flower shape.

Dominoes, Pappa Johns, Pizza Hut = unless there is a deal on very expensive for what tastes very processed pizza.

Gail’s bakery and Legoland Windsor.

My immediate thought was Bettys… don’t get the hype at all.

London is no more of a hilarious answer than Paris.

Tbf I find opinions like 'Paris is overrated' as an overrated opinion. It's almost like people go to these cities, plan their trip around doing all the major tourist landmarks, then act annoyed and surprised that they're full of long queues and didn't live up to their expectations.

When we took DC to Paris instead of wasting hours queuing to go up the Eiffel tower we spent hours picnicking in the sunshine on a patch of grass overlooking it. We got to relax and marvel at it's beauty whilst enjoy some great food from a local bakery.

You queue for hours, shuffling up hundreds up stairs shoulder to shoulder with strangers, only to stare out at a view of Paris that doesn't contain the Eiffel tower in it and you're surpised it wasn't an amazing experience?

Much prefer Paris. London is pretty awful was there last week

It's a JFT (just for tourists).

Never been to Betty’s because the ones in both York and Ilkley always have queues down the street and it just doesn’t seem worth that for an overpriced scone.

Oxford is pretty overrated. I did my post doc there so lived there for a bit. The tourists drove me absolutely bonkers. The pavements are just so narrow and they stop dead in their tracks with zero warning so you end up running into the back of them. Some of them do stupid shit like standing in the middle of the road for a perfect insta shot… Bikes, so many bikes. Everywhere was just rammed constantly. Lots of annoying tours as well blocking the entire street.

I loved lots of individual elements of it- Cowley was my fave, loved Pitt Rivers, the Ashmolean and the natural history museum. The little cocktail bar/book shop in the covered market. The tourists ruin it, it’s too small to handle them.

Love love love Oxford. Yes the tourists are crazy but it's very special

Oh I like it there!

You might like Stockbridge too then?

Gingercatlover · Today 18:36

Agree with Betty’s so overpriced and tiny portions, definitely wouldn’t queue to get a table there again.

Lovemycat2023 · Today 18:38

Anywhere that does “bottomless” food and drink. There are loads of restrictions,
it’s never worth the money, just give us a decent portion to start with (Cote, I’m looking at you and your bottomless fries)

Even if they're low cost ingredients, you have to pay someone to make the food, serve it and clear up. You have a manage the finances, pay rent, gas, electricity, council tax, sundries.

Yes but there's no real skill in making pasta or pizza

OMG that place is amazing! As a lifelong Asterix fan I spent an embarrassing amount of money in the gift shops!

It was so much more laid back, rides were better, less people.

Lentilcakes · Today 18:49

Agreed. I think people go expecting this super hyped up over romanticised place and wind up disappointed. I’m half French, my family really detest Paris in the same way lots of Brits hate London I guess. It is grimy and simply dodgy in parts (Montmartre for example is hideous at night).

I found Montmatre/bottom of the sacre coeur awful last time I went which was about 7 years ago. We went at Xmas time so it was really busy (and very cold, don’t do it folks!) and we were hassled by hawkers touting their crap and bring very intimidating. I was trying to get DH away from them. I’ve always loved Paris but never had an experience like that around that area and found it was clogged with Lime scooters, and didn’t have quite a good vibe as it used to.
And I live in London so v much used to a capital city!

I think if you look at as an independent place it's fun, but if you compare to Florida you will be let down.

The food is awful as well.

Totally agree with you on food being really awful at Disney!!

Yes, yes and yes!

Also the staff were so nice, I found the people at Disney to be downright rude. We have a video of Obelix asking me for a kiss and then doing his bashful act. It was joyous!

I'd love to go at Christmas. I bet it's a lovely atmosphere.

Scotland…. But for no other reason that the cold. So much potential but spoilt (for me) but the fact i spent most of my visits just feeling cold (and I only visit family there in the depth of summer

Dublin - too much forced "craic"

Madame Tussauds - well past its day

San Francisco - so expensive, run down with a big issue with homelessness

I 100% agree with all 3

Rivers, whenever I go anywhere with my parents they want to take a ‘nice walk along the river’ - no mum, I haven’t travelled into central London from the rural Gloucestershire to walk along the side of the fucking Thames, why not go on a boat ride or a museum or the shops or something we don’t have at home in our tiny market town!

sorry, it’s good to get that off my chest!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · Today 19:41

Brighton - so run down.
Centre parks - expensive, damp, grotty accommodation and activities that are all done and dusted by 10am, leaving a boring day of nothing to do. There are really only so many times you can go on a bike ride, and it’s no fun swimming in a pool that is rammed with people. I really can’t see the attraction of the place. Couldn’t wait to go home! Worst holiday I’ve ever had.
Cadburys chocolate - used to be amazing, now it’s horrible.
Christmas fairs/pantomimes/parties/hype/forced fun- basically I hate Christmas!
