AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

@coulditbeme2323
I get the point of your post. I really do. I'm often astonished at how much money I "have" to spend on the most boring things (replacement swim goggles, bin bags, school socks, toothpaste etc).

But... Your post also hit me in a sensitive spot. I almost never (maybe once a month at most) have a drink out. If I do, I have whatever is cheapest - normally a diet coke. If I eat out I always, always have tap water (rarely eat out at the moment).

I just don't do the cafe lifestyle that the vast majority of my friends do. I avoid meeting people for brunch etc, or if I do I just have a drink.

£50 for brunch for two of us makes my head spin.

Life wasn't always like this, I had WAY more disposable income pre children. Post children and post fucking VAT on education, I can safely say that even when I am at the end of myself with exhaustion we will still be eating at home, even if it's pasta pesto or fridge tapas!

One day I hope to be wealthy enough to go and have brunch without hyperventilating inwardly...

Edited

You could easily have brunch out if you didn't choose to pay for private schooling.

How many kids do you have that 5 days of food costs £180?! £36 a day, not including the meat or bread!

3 kids.

Totaldramallama · Yesterday 13:49

What do you usually do on the weekend op, if swimming, brunch, takeaway, and visiting multiple shops is 'nothing'. You went to so many different shops and food places and are now confused you spent a lot of money over the weekend. This thread is so weird.

3 kids.

Working out the total amount you spent on food (Tesco, butcher and sourdough) you're spending £45 a day on food so if you're wondering where your money goes, that would explain it.

You can get other stuff at Tesco's apart from food!

£50 for brunch is outrageous.

Yeah, Sunday Brunch hubby only at Bills £50

"Hubby only" my arse!

£50 for brunch is outrageous.

Okay cool, I’m American and spent $1,500 on a brain MRI yesterday, so I’m struggling to be horrified by ‘we somehow spent money while staying within a mile of home.’ Like… yes, life costs money? What’s exactly is your point?

Also, have you not been out to brunch lately -- it's easily $70 now for a family of three.

Well if you bought loads of home stuff then of course that's expensive.

If you spend all weekend shopping for nice things then yes, you are going to spend a lot of money. And £180 on online shopping- especially if it wasn't food- definitely "counts".

What a weird thread.

Yep apologies, I saw that after I'd posted.

Sorry if people are really that interested, but I promise you it's very dull.

And I am going to round up for ease.

Saturday morning £4 coffee while youngest two had swimming club.
Saturday ordered Tesco's £180 for Sunday (can't really count that)
Saturday £30 at Boots on shower gels, toothpaste etc.
Saturday Butchers £45 on chicken breasts and burgers
Saturday evening Chinese takeaway for 2 adults and 3 kids £70

Sunday £10 on coffee x2 with husband
Sunday £5 3 Famous Five Books from charity shop
Sunday £4 Sourdough from Gails
Sunday Brunch hubby only at Bills £50
Too good to go Rodeo donuts £8
Chopping Boards TK Max £15

I told you it was dull!

With this sort of lifestyle, it sounds as though you don’t really need to worry too much about what you’re spending. Congratulations, I guess. Your ‘doing nothing’ bears no resemblance to my ‘doing nothing’. Mine doesn’t involve going out for coffees, going to restaurants or shops. It involves being in my house and going out for a couple of walks and I can do that without spending any money at all.

It would be very easy for you to reduce or eliminate most of those expenses so I’m sure you could ask for advice on that if needed- lots of MNers are really good at budgeting.

😂😂😂😂
You're as bad as the OP.

Whatever.

Theres no way i'm considering taking kids to a regular swimming club & having a coffee there as an 'event'

or buying 3 kids books at a charity shop as 'going out shopping'

& the day buying a chopping board is a luxury .....

Frankly, I don't care what you think that makes me.

The only thing we agree on is we need more Lego! Always.

Agreed.

I wasn't trying to make out like I was hard done by, but that it's easy to spend so much money doing fairly run of the mill things.

I think between 500-600 doing absolutely nothing!

If you didn't spend anything then the money should still be in the bank.^

But surely you know that those things cost money, whether they’re a ‘treat’ or not? So at the end of the weekend, when you realise that the things you’ve bought have cost money, would you be surprised enough to start a thread about it?

@User7649527 hi, I don’t think you are an idiot whatsoever, and I’m sorry youve been getting a hard time in this thread about your choices, which are your business! Honestly being able to go out for brunch… is often much nicer than going out for brunch! Especially if it’s a convenient mid level brunch.
I think you’re doing brilliantly, and your children are so lucky to have you.

This 💕

& I think the VAT on school fees was a bad decision.

@User7649527
but you didn't help yourself by just bluntly saying whst you said in your first post.

I mean I have literally listed out what I spent and where.

Not sure in what world that is vague.

Terrible, look fantastic - taste awful.

Krispy Kreme (which are also on too good to go) much better at half the price.

Thanks. That's definitely consistent with what I've read - apparently they're stale and dry!

And at full price insanely expensive as well.

Look great, clever names, but really poor.

Mirrorxxx · Yesterday 14:23

It’s so easy to spend a lot on not much. I think I spent
£70 M&s food
£8 2 sorbets
£3 parking
£4 bread at the bakery
£3 post office
£50 lunch

TheWineoftheChicken · Yesterday 14:24

Well this thread has definitely made me realise why there are so many people on MN saying things like ‘we’ve got a high household income but nothing to show for it’. People are just frittering money away without seemingly realising that spending small amounts of money a lot of times adds up to a lot of money! This is why money management should be taught in schools, so many people haven’t got a clue.

luckylavender · Yesterday 14:25

What about the other £179? Why did you have to say the bread came from Gails?
