To wonder why anyone would want to live in America?

allergon842 · 07/06/2026 17:06

I follow a woman on Instagram who moved from England to the States and someone commented "America is only great if you're white, rich, and healthy".

Putting aside Trump/politics, I've always found it weird why anyone would want/would have wanted to live there. I understand if you're from a developing country, but I don't see the appeal for anyone who comes from Europe. The lower taxes and opportunities are enticing, but if you can't make it, you can fall very easy with the lack of a safety net. It seems to be only decent if you're a top earner ($100,000+).

I think there’s a lot you have to ignore if you live in any privileged, white, professional bubble. The plight of the poor, violent crime, the impact of your lifestyle on the environment …

It is not “privileged” to have chosen to work to get and then maintain a professional career.

Maybe you’re right. Hard work should be rewarded. But it depends if the opportunities you relied on are available to everyone and if you care about the low-paid workers who work damn hard and do the tasks that everyone relies on but few notice.

However, if you blithely assert that you and your social circle would be better off in the US due to higher wages and fewer taxes, then I’ll wonder if you’ve considered the bigger picture.

I agree with this and the mindset illustrates the sizemic cultural difference that I can't get my head around.

And if you blithely assert that decades of study then diligently working your way up in a cut-throat profession while also bringing up a family is privilege then I’ll leave you to your ignorance.

Why does it have to mean that? I know loads of people who have done just that, including me but they still have what is referred to as a 'social conscience'. This is something that was installed in us by our parents and families. It is not all about the self in the UK.

I think with that post you have just proven the cultural differences point!

Low paid workers are low skilled. It's a job anyone can do. Supply and demand.

So, what's your point? You do realise that all humans are equal don't you.

I don't think we're all equal.

OneTealShaker · 08/06/2026 13:53

It’s usually people with closed minds and some kind of misplaced superiority complex about their small lives in this declining, increasingly poor country who look down upon people choosing to relocate to America.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 08/06/2026 13:55

I would earn 6 x as much and am sorely tempted atm.

Quine0nline · 08/06/2026 13:58

Sales tax varies from state to state but 4% to 9%. Vat here 20%

House sizes - mainly detached - less neighbour disputes.

Race - the last few years apart (and only certain areas) - if your a good hard worker and contribute then you're ok.

Those who wish to sing, always find a song- people don't need to move to the U.S. to be successful.

Personally, I don’t see guns as an issue. Sure, you see in the news the horrific cases of school shootings but we have an abundance of knife crime here in the UK… which sometimes I wonder might be preventable if guns were legal. In fact, women (and men) might be able to protect themselves from rape and crime more if criminals knew that everyone had a gun. Sure, they’d also have a gun but I can’t stand the notion that guns in America are ‘scary’… sure there needs to be more vetting so that they don’t get in the wrong hands but it’s in the constitution

So, essentially, you want a replica of the old Wild West🤔.

Because anyone who says anything like, "America is only great if you're white, rich, and healthy," is a rage baiting saddo along with the person who posted it on MN for comments.

well yes, because I follow amazing, very rich Black US women on fb or youtube etc...who have various occupations

There is privilege involved in being clever enough to access that kind of career though, no? Not everyone can do well at GCSE and A level because not everyone has the type of brain that is good at such things. How can someone with a couple of GCSEs work their way up to a three figure salary?

Rrnraf · 08/06/2026 15:13

Do you think a rapist or a murderer is as equal as a person as someone who doesn't commit crime?

Having a growth and can do mentality helps.

DNA affects how easy studying feels. Hard work affects what you actually do with your ability.

What's that got to do with Low skilled workers. Are you more important than low skilled workers?

I don't think I even know what a 'growth mentality' is, are you American. I don't know anybody who speaks like that in real life, in the UK anyway. To me it's therapy talk.
