American Influencers who terminated for T21.

Has everyone else seen all the hatred online for the social media influencers who have decided to terminate a pregnancy due to a diagnosis of T21?

I have no idea who the couple are but today my social media feed is full of really abhorrent articles, videos and posts aimed at them (and about termination in general) and I’m just horrified.

Unsurprisingly they are in America, but even so.

I’m assuming the couple have been streaming videos about the pregnancy since the start and this announcement seems to have sparked absolute outrage.

Ok, the Influencers must have realised that some people would be upset by their decision, but at the same time, those same people must understand that although couples choose to have terminations based on medical conditions it’s still usually a very difficult and upsetting decision for them to make.

Has anyone else seen it?
I’m deleting as much of it as I can from my timeline but it’s constant.
They are even getting death threats.

It’s like a witch-hunt, it’s disgusting 😢

Nobody is forced to continue a pregnancy. It’s just about at what stage they can’t force the state to intervene in their pregnancy any more, which is quite different. The state isn’t getting women pregnant, quite the opposite - we have a spectrum of free and highly reliable contraceptives so we don’t get pregnant. But if we do, I don’t think it’s a human right to force the state to intervene at any stage we like to then end that pregnancy. Medical staff have feelings and the vast majority will not want to terminate a healthy 30 week pregnancy, and we shouldn’t make them.

No one opts for an abortion at that point unless it is incompatible with life.

I'm not going to take a stance on the decision of the couple as I know these things are never straight forward. I do think they might have got a different response if they had said, "We don't think we can handle this, American health care system not friendly for this, worry about what happens to our child when we can no longer be here, etc," they might have got a friendlier response.

I have to admit that if I was a parent currently considering this issue for an unborn child, I'd be rather rattled by all the people coming out saying they got that diagnosis and the baby was born perfectly 'normal'.

That sounds as though they may have just had the first " risk" screening test but not an actual amino. My DD was given a 1 in 7 chance of downs from nuchal fold test but the amino actually ruled that out

Also, I had an abortion, at 31 years of age, I was in good health, but the baby was draining me of everything. It was literally killing me and by the time I got to 10 weeks, we had to TFMR because I was dying. I have two other children and a husband to think about: the newest baby wasn’t even a baby at that point, more of a leech that was draining everything from me before my day had even started. I was so poorly I couldn’t do anything so TFMR it was.

Good grief; a ‘leech’? That’s how you talk about a developing human? I have sympathy for your situation, having been through full blown medicated hyperemesis with DS, but you sound like you’re in denial frankly. A 10 week fetus is noticeably human shaped and has most of its anatomy at that stage. And that’s not a TFMR it’s a termination because you struggled being pregnant.

Good for you? Many do have abortions for that type of sickness. I don't blame them. Also sounds like a medical reason to me.

Sartre · 07/06/2026 08:14

It’s likely due to the big pull from certain advocacy groups not to allow late terminations for DS, I know Sally Phillips has been particularly vocal in this remit. I watched her docu a few years ago and understood her points but I feel it’s always unfair to insist everyone else makes the same life choices as you because yours were definitely right.

Raising a child with any disability is far more difficult than an able bodied NT child, irrespective of how amazing the disabled child is. Terminating at such a late stage must be utterly harrowing, nobody is opting to do that for the hell of it.

Down syndrome isn’t incompatible with life unless there’s additional reasons, this couple still chose termination quite late.

Seriously though calling a developing baby a ‘leech’? Thats pretty horrible IMO

Well technically it is a parasite hence why the woman's immune system is suppressed. Why does it matter how she describes it?

What happened to a woman having the right to choose what she wants to do with her body?

DontBuyAnotherBook · 07/06/2026 08:22

I will.choose the same action should it happen as we are trying for another.

It’s not just her body though, it’s the baby’s body too. Nobody is forcing women to become pregnant unless they are raped but that is a very small minority. Therefore they ‘chose’ what to do with their body, and this is an unlikely but still not impossible consequence.

As early as possible, as late as necessary.
Wishing autism on a child is vile.

Why? If they can’t cope with Down Syndrome then they definitely won’t cope with a child with non verbal autism. I’m pointing out they relied on the scan being perfect but that doesn’t always show the disability.

I’m not on social media but my DS1 is and he contacted me yesterday about this. He writes about and advocates for disability rights. Some of the comments in support of the couple were also horrific if you were a disabled person reading them and seeing what others thought your life was worth.

That’s SM, though. Everything has to be 100mph and hotter than the sun.

They also say things simply to be an arsehole.

Define as late as necessary please? Would you support "abortion" at 39 weeks?,

I think in choosing to have a baby, you accept that there is a chance you won't be having a "perfect" child.

But there no need to continue with a pregnancy if you know about problems before birth

No, your comprehension skills are severely lacking. I said I hope their next child doesn’t appear perfect on the scan but then goes on to have autism or similar, as they wouldn’t cope.

You’ve read it as ‘I hope their child isn’t scan perfect, but has autism’ which is entirely different.

I didn’t, FFS.

Ok. Got it. I apologise, but you really have framed that strangely.

Whipped myself into a frenzy?? What the fuck?? Where the hell are you getting that from

If that's not what you said then it's very poor writing as it certainly comes across that way

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 07/06/2026 08:31

I think they’re both a couple of arseholes. Being ‘Influencers’ is the most vapid, shallow, load of bollocks.
And i know money is always the motive behind it.

They knew full well the response they would get.
There’s no more divisive subject in America than abortion.
They knew, and must be thriving on all the attention: good, bad, and vitriolic.

A proper pair of cunts.
