To think all knives including religious ones should be banned, after what happened to Henry Nowak

BritIndianGal · 04/06/2026 15:19

A more sensible thread this time. I think all carrying of knives should be banned with no religious exemptions allowed , the law should be called the Henry Nowak Bill ....in memory of the young man who lost his life

It should be fairly easy to make it a requirement that legitimate knives have to be transported in a way that makes it as difficult as possible for them to be grabbed and used violently. For example, not tucked straight into a belt, but encased in a lockable box or lockable sheath.

How would you know ?

How would you know if anyone was carrying a concealed knife as they go past you ?

The killer's knife wasn't concealed. It was worn on display on the outside of his clothing.

BritIndianGal · 04/06/2026 17:01

Wasnt part of their alleged conversation about the knife itself, as it was visbly worn on belt? My point stands

No to all Knives in public

There is a big difference between carrying a knife for your job and because you believe in something. I think many people, me included, have had enough of ‘because my religion requires it’ and I can’t believe it’s in law that Sikhs can carry a weapon in this way. It’s another example of allowing peoples beliefs to encroach and take priority over standards and norms in the uk. Whilst I agree that people will still carry knives, it is done illegally and there is no confusion in law.

I also wish people would stop saying that the muslim faith and Sikh faith are peaceful. There are bad apples in every group, the difference is most of us are just going about our lives within the laws and not expecting special treatment.

The Sikh faith is peaceful.

Would you also ban circumcision and kosher slaughter? I would personally ban 1 but not 2.

I agree. I can’t see what possible excuse people have for carrying around a blade. Ban anything over a two inch penknife that is carried habitually

Chefs? Tradespeople?

ChatGpt said a lot of sikhs agree as well,

We just need the law rolled out

No knives to be carried in public, including chefs and fencers

What about campers? How would private chefs do their job if they cannot take their equipment between home and each place of work.

ScaredButUnavoidable · 04/06/2026 17:13

BritIndianGal · 04/06/2026 16:51

The point is, lets make it as difficult for them as possible as we can

Do you think the type of people who have it in them to kill other people actually care what the law says they can and cant do?

Murder isn’t legal - but killers still do it.

You can make knife carrying illegal - but people will still carry them if they want to.

The law enables punishments to be issued after wrong doing has occurred, but it doesn’t have the power to prevent a certain action or behaviour from occurring in the first place.

Evil people will do what they want to do regardless of the Law.

I once read an article about a woman who was (seemingly randomly) pulled over and had her car searched. She was prosecuted for carrying sharp knives in her car, along with other utensils.

The police apparently failed to notice the food van that was hitched behind the car...

Reading that has just made me realise I drive around with sharp knives in my vehicle all the time. It’s a small camper van and I leave cutlery etc in the cupboards, but if I ever got randomly pulled and searched, there’s many things I could use as a weapon should I be so inclined.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2026 16:09

No. Stupid kneejerk bullshit.

I disagree.

I don’t see much threat from kirpan-wielding Sikhs.

I do see a much bigger threat to public faith in (and indeed reality of) neutral justice if we maintain carve-outs to public safety laws for specific named religious groups.

Permit everyone or no-one to argue a belief-based need to carry a knife.

BritIndianGal · 04/06/2026 15:42

Well at least the ceremonial ones can be made plastic or like a stuffed cuddly toy make like someone said on another thread

None of us are ever going to be able to unsee that video again

So what jellycat ceremonial knives ?

TheWytch · 04/06/2026 17:20

The trouble with this type of knee jerk reaction is that it only inconveniences those of us who carry a knife that we need.

Those who wish to do harm with a knife will continue to carry them illegally just as they do now.

Chefs? Tradespeople?

Why I say habitually, there is a difference between a chef on their way to work versus getting dressed to go to Tesco and taking your knife with you. If the police could stop and search - find a knife and you say “I am a chef on my way to work- here’s my restaurant number to check” fine- if you say it’s just something I always carry- then I’m sorry that’s not on.

Yes I’d ban both of these as well. And halal slaughter. If your religion requires your meat to be slaughtered in an inhumane way then you can become vegetarian.

Will Vickrum Digwa albe allowed to carry his ceremonial sword is prison?

if not, it shows that the state regarded it as a weapon rather than a religious accessory all along.

They will take belts and shoelaces too. Should they be banned?

I couldn't bring chocolate coins in. WEAPONS.

How is a chef supposed to work if they can't carry their knives with them?

How are you supposed to carry knives home from the shops to use in the kitchen?

Knives crime is a problem and ceremonial knives are something to think about banning, but you need to apply a bit of common sense to these things.

Hiddeninthetrees · 04/06/2026 17:39

BritIndianGal · 04/06/2026 16:56

Im opposed to them being worn on one's belt, being 18 cms etc

I would not carry one even to a birthday party.. I would just use a table knife borrowed from the premises where the party was. Accidental use by a kid etc

We often have birthday cake at the park, not sure they have them freely available there!

Edited

You are carrying a knife and you have a receipt to show it was bought that day- fine. You have a knife case and give me your restaurant phone number and I can check you’re on shift-fine. You have a knife and you’re carrying a birthday cake- fine.

You have a knife because you always put it on when you get dressed -just in case. Not ok.

Yet another thing for the police to be spending time one

Assuming the restaurant has a landline. And assuming the police officer can believe whoever answers the phone.

Looks like the serious thinkers are still at work.

What if someone is self-employed and works alone?

Do you not think the police have better things to? Hmm

Re-reading the PP, you could actually understand that they themselves would personally be out enforcing the new world order - they didn't mention the police to be fair (although I presumed as well ....)

TonTonMacoute · 04/06/2026 18:01

You cannot ban all knives, it's utterly ridiculous.

We need to focus on root causes, whether cultural, joblessness, poor education, lack of role models, lack of discipline in families and in schools.

In more than one recent case it has been found that the police and other authorities have received several warnings about people, which they have ignored, and that person has gone on to murder - Axel Rudekabana and Valdo Calocane being only the latest two. That total lack of any proper investigation and effective intervention what we need to clamp down on first and foremost.

The rise in knife crime is a symptom not a cause, and many knives used in crime are illegal anyway, banning them will change nothing except make life difficult for everyone else.

I’m an artist on the way to work an in-person session for no pay. It’s purely for the collab. I am carrying multiple blades of various shapes and sizes as part of my work. They are all in cases because otherwise, ouch. Am I ok?
