To be pissed off at housing tenants

To be pissed off at this
We live in a nice area, there isnt much available to rent. The last 4 bed was 4500 a month that came up 2 months ago.
We were renting at 3000 a month an older house but it needed work and the landlord decided to sell so we moved out and living in a temporary small flat further away from kids schools waiting and waiting for 6 months for a house to come up.
We have heard from several friends that in the area the council have moved a problem family in to a large house in one of the roads. They dont work, 4 kids, police round all the time, stolen car crashed into a lampost, kids out the front screaming, teen age boy being arrested.
Anyway, these absolute scummers are living for free in a house we would love..
Whilst I am paying 40 percent tax and effectively homeless with 2 kids. Waiting for a house to come up that I can afford as 4500 is out of budget and property is scarce.
I am basically paying for these people to live in a house i can not afford to live in myself.
Am I a Mug? Should I move countries?
What is the fecking point in working anymore.

@Whosthetabbynow In that case my husband and I are 'scummy renters" - we've been privately renting for over a decade now. Social worker and teacher. So "scummy"(!)

Her view, not mine. It’s utterly vile and there’s only one scum and that’s her.

Er, no she isn't:

Yes she is

And if push came to shove, she would definitely kick that family out to house her own family...

If neither of them work and they need state funding to get by then whats the point them being in society? Put them in jail and they can have their meals and limited leisure facilities for free. Pop the kids into care - not going to do them any worse.

I am fed up of money being spluffed up the wall on such oxygen theives when the NHS and education systems are on their knees.

It costs around £50k-£60k pa to keep someone in prison, so that would be bloody expensive.

You can get low life anywhere - I’ve known some that actually owned their home, or rented privately.

Social housing, nowadays, is based on perceived need. If you’re registered for social housing , it’s just that they have greater priority than you. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I'm surprised OP didn't mention the massive TV and spending benefits on cigarettes and botox. Have I missed anything?

I can't imagine any council allowing someone to turn down multiple properties for no good reason. Some rules do differ but I haven't heard of any council not having any policies at all about refusing properties and allowing people to turn down property after property after property.

That's what they said, i'm not sure how many they turned down but the children's needs and it having to be suitable for their dog ruled several out.

Sounds like some may have been ruled out for genuine reasons then regarding their children's needs, not just because they fancied a bigger house with lakes.

I could only bid for certain properties based on my child's needs too but I was very careful about placing a bid as I knew it was almost certain that I'd be offered it due to my banding priority and accepted the first house I bid on.

Again bollocks - unless it's a guide/assitance dog there is no provision for what's suitable for a pet in the housing allocation rules.

There are a lot of benefit apologists on here but I agree with you @Pssedoffathis

Why can't we call this out for what it is? Adults not working and kids causing trouble being given a nice big house in a good area that they will no doubt not look after.
Yes that is a massive assumption but is based on previous experience.

A previous neighbour of mine has 5 children with their partner both of whom have never worked. They have been moved several times due to anti social behaviour and have now been housed by the council in a 6 bedroom barn conversion with 5 acres of land and 2 lakes.
I'm lucky to own a lovely place myself but couldn't afford that and I don't think it's fair that unemployed claimants get priority over those in employment.

OP it must be very frustrating.

A 6 bed luxury barn conversion? Well, I live in social housing, worked all my afult life, and I’ve worked in social housing, for years, so I wouldn't get too upset.

That type of social housing is rarer than hens teeth….in fact, do leave off. 😂😂😂

@dontletmedownbruce How do you know (or claim to) quite a lot about your NDNs working hours/shifts or whether the one of them goes to the gym or are 'summing' themselves in the garden - when you are working all hours?

Their country of origin is not relevant

OP is a landlord.

And therefore personally responsible for the commodification of housing.

Neither have I, and I worked in homeless prevention and resettlement for many years, in a city and 3 different borough/district council areas.

I’m aware of how often they are at home because I live next door to them, I can hear them through the poorly soundproofed wall all day, and my husband is retired so he’s here more often than me. x

Country of origin isnt relevant but should be, as NI contributions are supposed to pay for benefits.

Heronwatcher · Today 16:59

Eh, so you own a house which you are renting out, you’re earning enough to pay 40% tax and pay a ridiculous amount of rent each month and you think you’re the one that’s hard done to?

I completely agree, evict the scummer family so they all starve on the streets and you can waft between the house you own, the old house that the scunners used to live in and your new rental. Excellent 👍

Heronwatcher · Today 17:03

I am basically paying for these people to live in a house i can not afford to live in myself.

This makes no sense either. You could afford to live there until the landlord decided to sell it (their decision). You’re actually just making this up now.

Besides which you also have the option of selling your other house to buy somewhere too- which I imagine isn’t something available to the “scummer” family.

Yes, she is

Plot twist. I am also a landlord. Which no dount will enrage many people. And I know this as it was one option I was looking at to let my property in another area. Council are offering over market rents to landlords..
I can't sell my property atm as I have a young family living there and I know property is scarce there too and I am not going to evict them and do that to them
I just want to rent in a particular area for the time being

Well thank you for the correction. The OP seems to show more consideration for her own tenants than for the people she assumes are "scummers". How very lovely of her.
