To be pissed off at housing tenants

To be pissed off at this
We live in a nice area, there isnt much available to rent. The last 4 bed was 4500 a month that came up 2 months ago.
We were renting at 3000 a month an older house but it needed work and the landlord decided to sell so we moved out and living in a temporary small flat further away from kids schools waiting and waiting for 6 months for a house to come up.
We have heard from several friends that in the area the council have moved a problem family in to a large house in one of the roads. They dont work, 4 kids, police round all the time, stolen car crashed into a lampost, kids out the front screaming, teen age boy being arrested.
Anyway, these absolute scummers are living for free in a house we would love..
Whilst I am paying 40 percent tax and effectively homeless with 2 kids. Waiting for a house to come up that I can afford as 4500 is out of budget and property is scarce.
I am basically paying for these people to live in a house i can not afford to live in myself.
Am I a Mug? Should I move countries?
What is the fecking point in working anymore.

Yes, I'm surprised OP didn't mention the massive TV and spending benefits on cigarettes and botox. Have I missed anything?

Remember when flat screen TVs were what the Daily Mail et al hated people with benefits having? Before that it was satellite dishes and Sky. Not sure what it is now, tattoos?

If neither of them work and they need state funding to get by then whats the point them being in society? Put them in jail and they can have their meals and limited leisure facilities for free. Pop the kids into care - not going to do them any worse.

I am fed up of money being spluffed up the wall on such oxygen theives when the NHS and education systems are on their knees.

Not working is not a crime.

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 15:00

I live in a mixed area with social and private and 90% of the people who can work, do work.
Everyone does their bit.

HairsprayBabe · Today 15:01

@RollOnSunshine "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"

Yep, it is now "80inch flat screen TVs" because they finally clicked that you can't get anything other than flat screens anymore.

It is also nails now.

Of course you can move countries. Where are you off to?

You should be in charge.

Great idea 💡 💡 💡 💡
if you became homeless and/or jobless for any reason,I'm sure you won't mind going to jail and your kids getting put in care 😘 😘 😘 😘

loislovesstewie · Today 15:05

I love the way that people think that prison and putting children into care is a magic solution. I mean places in care are just freely available aren't they? And being in care isn't a walk in the park. And what happens when prisoners are released with nowhere to go to?.

toottoot3 · Today 15:05

Are you homeless though? Nope, declaring yourself in same position as those in great distress doesn't help your case, you where paying £3k a month in rent, in an area which has much higher rent...
These are choices, sounds like you have plenty but decide to feel sorry for yourself, who knows what others are going through, I would rather a lot of other folk as neighbours than someone spouting poison, it's not a good look on anyone

How on earth is barn conversion with 5 acres of land and two lakes owned by the council and used for social housing? I find this hard to believe.

It is true, they kept refusing houses offered as too small as they didn't want the children to have to share bedrooms so the council rent it from a private landlord.

It is a very well known property locally due to the previous owner being well known and those that are aware of the situation are not happy as don't feel it is fair and the property and grounds aren't being looked after which is a shame.

Nowhere to go and no job.... oh wait, they end up back in prison because they are unemployed.

Thirteenblackcats · Today 15:08

Agree OP. It’s very frustrating. Hope you get sorted soon. 4500 is a lot a month, would a mortgage work out cheaper?

FlowerSticker · Today 15:08

CoffeeCantata · Today 14:32

All together so that they can only wind up each other.

They tried that.... Look at the projects in NYC and see how that turned out...

Does not put you in full knowledge of the facts .

You can go on housing list too. Tho maybe low down On list.

HairsprayBabe · Today 15:09

@loislovesstewie not to mention it is fucking Victorian, we used to have prisons for poor people - they were called workhouses I thought as a society we had moved past dehumanising the poor.

Holdonforsummer · Today 15:09

£4500 per month in rent? Where on earth do you live? I am in South East London and you could get a mansion for that. I know it’s not what you want to hear but maybe try moving somewhere cheaper. Good luck.

Twins3007 · Today 15:10

"scummers" maybe not the right word, but I totally agree I know someone living in a 4 bed, driving a brand new Mercedes and raking in over 3k a month on UC and also help towards rent and council tax. Why do people on here slag off people that work hard and pay 40% tax , any bonus for working even harder is eaten up by tax, but not allowed to say anything about people taking the piss. I am not saying everyone on benefits takes the piss but I know its very easy to work the system,

I have moved countries a few times. There is homelessness/housing crisis all over. The places there isn't really, places like Finland and Singapore, either have 80+% social/government built housing or very very small levels of financial variability and a LOT of social programming.

But in those places OP would be an immigrant and I'm fairly sure the same people who don't like benefits/social housing people are the same that don't like immigrants.

OP put some energy into making things better for you, and not worse for others. Look at The Shift about housing commodification.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 15:10

FreyaFromTheFens · Today 14:16

There are a lot of benefit apologists on here but I agree with you @Pssedoffathis

Why can't we call this out for what it is? Adults not working and kids causing trouble being given a nice big house in a good area that they will no doubt not look after.
Yes that is a massive assumption but is based on previous experience.

A previous neighbour of mine has 5 children with their partner both of whom have never worked. They have been moved several times due to anti social behaviour and have now been housed by the council in a 6 bedroom barn conversion with 5 acres of land and 2 lakes.
I'm lucky to own a lovely place myself but couldn't afford that and I don't think it's fair that unemployed claimants get priority over those in employment.

OP it must be very frustrating.

Really?

ThatsNicer · Today 15:12

Welfare/benefits etc. are supposed to be a safety net for the weak and those fallen on hard times not a long term lifestyle choice.

I doubt she would get on it at all given that she rents out a flat.

SwatTheTwit · Today 15:14

I 100% support social housing existing but having lived with a Problem Neighbour myself - if not THE Problem Neighbour in our area - I 100% understand how frustrating and insane it feels.

He managed to single handedly make everyone’s lives miserable in our building.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 15:14

Pssedoffathis · Today 14:26

This is exactly my point. I think people are in denial if they think this doesn't happen.
I guess an analogy would be a wealthy parent and their two children. One is feckless, hasn't worked a day, destroyed their parents house, steals their parents car and drives it into a wall and is mean and horrible and is having to be bailed out financially for their own decisions. The other is dutiful, works hard, looks after the whole family if sick, cleans their parents house, never asks for a penny.
The parent gets sick, the dutiful child looks after them.
Then in the will the dutiful child gets nothing and the nightmare child gets the full estate.
I think social housing is a good thing, to be clear. I like the fact we have it for those in need. But what about respect and being a good citizen. Surely that should be a requisite for being given a helping hand. I wouldnt help someone who destoyed my house and my peace. Took my money and stuckk two fingers up at me
But some people take the absolute piss and also the system is just not fair when dutiful people get fuck all.

As long as it’s not near you eh?

floppybit · Today 15:14

Everyone accusing the OP of playing Daily Mail bingo probably haven’t experienced the misery of being insecurely housed with young children - I have and it’s utterly miserable. It isn’t fair. and of course OP is not being unreasonable to be upset by this.
