To be pissed off at housing tenants

To be pissed off at this
We live in a nice area, there isnt much available to rent. The last 4 bed was 4500 a month that came up 2 months ago.
We were renting at 3000 a month an older house but it needed work and the landlord decided to sell so we moved out and living in a temporary small flat further away from kids schools waiting and waiting for 6 months for a house to come up.
We have heard from several friends that in the area the council have moved a problem family in to a large house in one of the roads. They dont work, 4 kids, police round all the time, stolen car crashed into a lampost, kids out the front screaming, teen age boy being arrested.
Anyway, these absolute scummers are living for free in a house we would love..
Whilst I am paying 40 percent tax and effectively homeless with 2 kids. Waiting for a house to come up that I can afford as 4500 is out of budget and property is scarce.
I am basically paying for these people to live in a house i can not afford to live in myself.
Am I a Mug? Should I move countries?
What is the fecking point in working anymore.

@southerngirl10 90% of social housing historically and currently is allocated to British nationals so no it isn't.

I am so fucking sick of racist liars.

CaptainMyCaptain · Today 14:42

B1anche · Today 13:34

Yes, I'm surprised OP didn't mention the massive TV and spending benefits on cigarettes and botox. Have I missed anything?

A big dog?

XenoBitch · Today 14:42

Problem tenants got to be housed somewhere.
By all means be mad at their behaviour, but being mad about what you pay in rent compared to them etc seems pointless to me.

SnoopyPajamas · Today 14:43

Why do you need a 4 bed house if you only have two kids?

£4,500 isn't "out of budget". It's obscene. Strange you're not angrier about that?

I grew up on a council estate crammed full of "problem families". You'd have got some sympathy from me for this family's behaviour, but you clearly feel only the poor should have to put up with this, so I don't give a fuck, actually. If £3k a month rent was ever within budget, life on the dole would be a rude awakening for you. But feel free to put your money where your mouth is and sign on.

Nice bit of racism going on here 🙄

RollOnSunshine · Today 14:43

If neither of them work and they need state funding to get by then whats the point them being in society? Put them in jail and they can have their meals and limited leisure facilities for free. Pop the kids into care - not going to do them any worse.

I am fed up of money being spluffed up the wall on such oxygen theives when the NHS and education systems are on their knees.

I don’t think it is unreasonable to be frustrated, and I do think the sarky responses to the issue at play is part of the reason the right and farage are getting a foothold. If reasonable people won’t listen to what is actually happening and throw around accusations of being a bot, being daily mail, being X, Y and Z, rather than engaging, then we get what we deserve.

FWIW I see why you’re frustrated. But you’re frustrated at the wrong people. That family are working within the the rules of the system and living where they have been given. Just because it’s social housing it doesn’t mean they pay rent, it might mean they are supported in that, but that’s not the same as being free. And using the word ‘scummers’ rather details your point.

But people need to be housed across the country AND private rental costs are skyrocketing. Both are true.

Completely agree with this.

It’s the equivalent of calling anyone who comments on the changing demographic of their area racist or anti-immigration.

Everanewbie · Today 14:45

@Enigma54 what is racist about prioritising your own citizens before making provision for those from abroad?

HairsprayBabe · Today 14:49

@Everanewbie 90% of social housing is allocated to British nationals, historically and currently, what do you call that if it isn't "prioritising our own citizens"

dontletmedownbruce · Today 14:50

I work with this kind of family. Until you’ve been close to it, it’s impossible to understand how corrosive the problems are that are the result. (Sorry for tangled syntax, I’m typing in a hurry.)

I don’t understand why people have been so sneery about your description and language. You really have my sympathy.

Heres a bit more “Daily Mail bingo” for the broader Mumsnet audience, and to show solidarity to @op: my Romanian next-door neighbours, while they do work a couple of shifts a week, don’t seem to work very much. They are frequently out in the garden, summing themselves, as I prepare to go to work or return from work. The dad of the household usually pops out to the gym mid afternoon. I suspect they carefully cap their hours at 20 hours per week, to make sure they are eligible for top-up benefits. Meanwhile, I’m in an identical house working all the hours.

Expect a barrage of comments that these people deserve it. The only people that do is those with actual needs eg people with disabilities or families where the parents at least work but work long hours in minimum paid jobs.

The truth is there's just a lot of scroungers in this country who go on about there being no jobs or jobs being taken by foreigners. The truth is they're either lazy or know that benefits will give them a better quality of life. Then you've got the ones that pop out multiple babies yet are not fit to be parents and are top priority for housing.

Yes, op, you have every right to be annoyed, but let's face it, nothings going to change anytime soon and if anything, things will get worse.

Cheeseandolivesplease · Today 14:52

I do think that if you are at all able, you should be going out to work to provide for yourself and your own children, and to contribute to society.

SparklyHam · Today 14:52

I don't know what's so unbelievable about the OP.

Social housing for a 4 bed is rare, the council and housing associations will place somewhere there regardless of the problems they will cause to the local community because it's the only suitable housing they have.

And there's a rose-tinted spectacles idea that if you put problem tenants in a nice area where they don't know anyone or are not known, they'll appreciate it and settle down to be non-problematic.

Except they don't usually.

They cause just as many problems as they did before. Except this time the do-goooders can say 'they're not being accepted by the local community', they're being 'targeted' for complaints.

Nah, they're antisocial, feckless assholes. Always were and always will be. Give them a mansion and they'll destroy it in a few months.

Kirbert2 · Today 14:53

You live in a flat and own a property as a landlord and you think you are ''effectively homeless''. Are you actually serious?

They will also have to pay rent like anyone else. I doubt any LHA is going to fully cover £4000+ in rent.

You have not seen these people yourself. You heard from some friends……

Bananalanacake · Today 14:54

I completely agree with you.
I used to work with a woman who would come in and brag about listening to her neighbour having the shit beaten out of her by her abusive partner, she refused to do anything because 'once the lazy cow was dead she couldn't claim any more benefits'. I pulled her up on it and explained maybe she can't work because her partner prevents her doing so. The main point here is,, those who work resent those who can't be bothered and get everything given to them for free.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · Today 14:54

So you do own a house. You're just using it for rental income rather than living in it. Bring out the tiny violins for the struggling parent who wants two houses.

loislovesstewie · Today 14:55

Pssedoffathis · Today 13:35

Its a factual thing that is actually happening. I don't read the daily mail.
Maybe I would be worthy of empathy if I gave up my job and started a tirade of antisocial behaviour and didnt parent my kids properly..

So what's the answer then? Don't house anyone and have people with children living on the streets?

EmeraldShamrock000 · Today 14:56

Firstly it is not for free. It’s part of a government scheme. Secondly Yabvu calling people who live in social housing a scummer.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 14:56

Where do you suggest they be housed OP? We need a programme of building more social housing. People are being left behind. To buy a home needs a decent deposit. To rent privately now requires a large deposit. I loathe that some are pulling up the ladder because they’re all right jack and looking down on others. Who do people think they are? Seriously?

BillieWiper · Today 14:56

Right so I get deleted for saying that someone sounds hateful in their clearly goading OP. They suggest leaving the country and I agree with them?!

Yeah ok. Absolute nonsense.

FromRwithL · Today 14:57

Couldn’t agree more OP but you’ll get flamed for this thread. People aren’t allowed to complain these days without being accused of hate speech.

We need a complete overhaul of the benefits and social housing system with only people who actually need support getting it, not every lazy sod who runs to their GP claiming depression or with health conditions caused by obesity.

MrsTerryPratchett · Today 14:58

You're angry with the wrong people. The commodification of housing, the general downgrading of good support for struggling families (outside benefits), the large classes (meaning kids don't get individual attention) and on and on.

If you threw the people out of the house the parents would be homeless (more expensive) and the kids would be in care (much much more expensive). And the kids would have trauma and even less chance of a successful life.

HairsprayBabe · Today 14:58

Most social housing tenants are not feckless and work shy:

25%–29% of social housing lead tenants are retired.
27%–29% of lead tenants work full-time.
22%–25% are unable to work due to disability or being an unpaid carer of someone disabled.
7%–8% are unemployed and are able to work
