I realise this isn’t a new thing. And I realise that H & M are not alone in this. But my eye was drawn by an H & M advert on this site and when I visited the H & M website I was appalled by the photos of models there. A lot of them are no doubt AI generated and modified, but they are presenting images of women who look unwell. I thought the fashion industry was moving on from representing women in this way. I was naive.

I just ordered from H&M last week. I didn't see any unwell looking models.

imaccoffeeaddict · Today 06:57

They look fine.

I say this as an obese person. They look like they’re healthy weights.

Safarisagoody · Today 07:01

Can you give an example. These are not ai generated and I can’t see any unwell looking women on h &ms website, I just checked and they all look gorgeous and healthy,

is this just an issue you’ve got as they are slim?

MyOtherProfile · Today 07:05

I haven't looked on H&M recently but I did look on Zara not long ago and had the same thought. I found it quite worrying.

What on earth are you talking about, the Zara models are also gorgeous and healthy looking.

the issue thays worrying is when people can no longer recognise a healthy weight.

Agix · Today 07:13

People have a very messed up view on what is a healthy weight for an adult woman because of fashion. The models on H&M do look bordering on underweight and lack muscle tone (photoshop may have a lot to answer for with that) , but it seems entirely "healthy" to us for women because that's what we've been fed as the norm.

There's a lot of money to be made by convincing you that body type / weight is what's normal, usual and healthy.. So it will stay on trend.

Oh the irony of your last sentence.

What is ironic about that, of course it’s a worry if some people have got to the stage where they think a healthy weight looks unwell.

MyOtherProfile · Today 07:16

This is not a healthy weight and not something I hope our daughters aspire to.

Thays not true, they don’t lack muscle tone or bordering underweight, they are slim yes. They are simply your typical model look, and they won’t be using underweight models. It’s clear to see these are healthy fit young women.

if people want upper end of bmi or overweight models, then the likes of Zara and H&M is not the place you will find them, snag maybe,

That is a completely normal body. It's what i look like and I eat a normal healthy diet and exercise 3 times a week.

Don’t be ridiculous. She looks perfectly healthy!

BusterGonad · Today 07:18

I think when a model looks like she has a huge head compared to her body then she is underweight. In the 90s it was called lollypop head.

Hummusanddipdip · Today 07:19

Tbh I think its the unflattering poses they tend to stand in, or maybe the lack of a "typical" make up, they are made up to look makeup free, its not what we as a western society are used to seeing.
They dont look unhealthy to me

MrsCarmelaSoprano · Today 07:20

No pics so far are of unhealthy looking models.

This is a healthy weight!
DD is this shape and in the middle of the healthy BMI range!!

Yes. That looks bordering on emaciated to me.
Or someone who has been seriously unwell or is chronically ill.

tilypu · Today 07:21

I just took a look at the swimwear section as I thought that would be the best place to see the issue - but there's no issues to be found!

The models look great.

I'm old enough to remember when models truly looked emaciated - thankfully (after a huge uproar) things have moved on from then.

CaptainMyCaptain · Today 07:22

It's what I looked like until my mid 50s although I wasn't that tall. I was not anorexic.

Sartre · Today 07:22

imaccoffeeaddict · Today 07:16

No they don’t. They look healthy.

Do they not? I think those examples look perfectly healthy personally. We forget how tall most models are. These women will likely be 5 ft 9+ and most likely naturally thin. Also, models have historically always been thin, it’s only recently we’ve seen a wave of “body positivity” aka overweight models to help make the average woman (also overweight) feel “normal”.

Don’t be stupid! You can usually see in the description what size the models are wearing. It’s usually sizes 6-10.

What I don’t get is that if these were plus size models, nobody would start a thread dissecting their bodies. So why is it acceptable when they’re slim?

MyOtherProfile · Today 07:23

UniquePinkSwan · Today 07:21

Then we are both shocked.
I'll leave this thread now as some posters on here clearly come from the Kate Moss school of nothing tasting as good as skinny feels.
I'll hide the thread so no point tagging me.

delicioussoo · Today 07:23

They are slim and look nice, not underweight. I think we’re used to seeing young people waddle now.
