H & M model photographs

I realise this isn’t a new thing. And I realise that H & M are not alone in this. But my eye was drawn by an H & M advert on this site and when I visited the H & M website I was appalled by the photos of models there. A lot of them are no doubt AI generated and modified, but they are presenting images of women who look unwell. I thought the fashion industry was moving on from representing women in this way. I was naive.

If this thread was about slagging off women at the upper end of a healthy bmi saying they looked unfit, lacked muscle, unwell there would be an outcry,

some of the words are shocking, emaciated, unwell, lollipop head, these are gorgeous fit and healthy young women, and everyone slagging them off knows it.

if simply reveals a resentment,

imaccoffeeaddict · Today 07:25

MyOtherProfile · Today 07:23

Then we are both shocked.
I'll leave this thread now as some posters on here clearly come from the Kate Moss school of nothing tasting as good as skinny feels.
I'll hide the thread so no point tagging me.

I’m a size 18 and can’t see they’re healthy 😂

Sartre · Today 07:26

Yep I just selected a sample from the app and they were all 5 ft 9 or 10, says in the description. I don’t know if it’s still the case but they are expected generally to be minimum 5 ft 8. I remember going on a GCSE textiles trip to a fashion show and one of the girls was scouted but they measured her and she was an inch too short at 5 ft 8 so they rejected her.

Safarisagoody · Today 07:27

alexdgr8 · Today 07:21

Yes. That looks bordering on emaciated to me.
Or someone who has been seriously unwell or is chronically ill.

This just reveals a resentment in you, quite frankly it’s embarassing.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 07:27

They will all be 5'9" - 6' and a size 6-8, this is healthy and this is what that looks like!

JustFrustrated · Today 07:29

We’ve moved so far from seeing healthy weights it’s sad.

i know lots of women that look like that. Some with effort, some without.

A quick google tells you that H&M models start at size 6 (UK)….

Goblinmusic · Today 07:29

Some comments here are so rude. I'm 5'11 and a size 6-8. I do not look unhealthy or emaciated!

imaccoffeeaddict · Today 07:29

GingerBeverage · Today 07:29

But they dont! They’re just healthy young women.

Safarisagoody · Today 07:30

GingerBeverage · Today 07:29

They don’t break the rules, this is about the posters own issues with their own bodies.

its something when you’re so resentful over slim young women you start writing things like emaciated

weight really is something many people are messed up about,

astrozenica · Today 07:32

They look slim but not unhealthy.

So many people think it's perfectly healthy to be overweight that they don't realise what a healthy BMI looks like.

littleburn · Today 07:32

That photo is of a tall, slim, young women. She doesn’t have stick-like arms or legs for goodness sake! If we accept that bodies come in all shapes and sizes, that includes women at the taller and slimmer end of the spectrum.

DemBonesDemBones · Today 07:32

@MyOtherProfilethat is a completely normal looking woman!

RancidRuby · Today 07:35

alexdgr8 · Today 07:21

You are being ridiculous. She looks like a normal young woman. All these models are likely to be late teens/early twenties, I was a size 6 when I was that age and I ate anything I wanted to. I’m in my fifties now and no longer a size 6 but my daughter is and she’s perfectly healthy.

People have a very messed up view on what is a healthy weight for an adult woman because of fashion. The models on H&M do look bordering on underweight and lack muscle tone (photoshop may have a lot to answer for with that) , but it seems entirely "healthy" to us for women because that's what we've been fed as the norm.

There's a lot of money to be made by convincing you that body type / weight is what's normal, usual and healthy.. So it will stay on trend.

Speaking generally, I agree. I also agree there are definitely some models on h&m who look an unhealthy weight.

I have an anorexic daughter and it's been eye opening for me. Someone said to me recently that she doesn't look anorexic. My daughter is significantly underweight - her periods have stopped, she has lanugo and her hair is falling out. We bought her prom dress in a size zero and she had to have it taken in. But that person was right - in the context of current beauty standards, she doesn't stand out as shockingly thin. Isn't that crazy?

We absolutely have lost sight of what a healthy weight is - not just at the overweight end of the scale. We seem to have this toxic mix at the moment where a large percentage of the population is overweight/obese but the beauty standard is extreme thinness. I would argue because of these two things we don't know what an actual healthy weight looks like. We are very quick to call out being overweight as unhealthy but very reluctant to recognise the dangers at the other end of the scale.

Safarisagoody · Today 07:36

MyOtherProfile · Today 07:16

This is not a healthy weight and not something I hope our daughters aspire to.

Don’t be daft now, that’s a perfectly healfhy looking young woman. Shame on you,

Agree, I have been very unwell and borderline emaciated- am 5ft and following a period of ill health bordered on below 6st, looking back on photos l look awful, protruding clavicle, sunken eyes… that’s looking emaciated. These models look fine.

I’m sorry about your daughter but these models are not in this category, most of them are a size 8,

What on earth do you look like if you think this is not a healthy weight? It’s a completely normal sized slim figure.

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter but a woman who is smaller than a size 0 absolutely will stick out as unhealthily slim.

whatsit84 · Today 07:41

My body looks like the girl in the spotty dress and I’m in my 40s, eat well, exercise and am a very healthy BMI. People think chubby is normal because that’s what we see most around us.

MrBlobbysNuts · Today 07:42

the jealousy of women who aren’t naturally slim strikes again 🥱

DancingNotDrowning · Today 07:44

That model is not too thin - I’m genuinely shocked that posters think she is.

she looks absolutely normal - people have lost the plot

Undercookedby10 · Today 07:45

imaccoffeeaddict · Today 07:16

No they don’t. They look healthy.

White dress is absolutely underweight. This is not health.
