Earliest time to cut the grass tomorrow??

I’m on a new build estate, so lots of people living around me. I need to cut the grass tomorrow but want to do it as early as possible to avoid the heat - health conditions make it too difficult once it warms up. Obviously I don’t want to be a dick though 🤦‍♀️

What’s the consensus? 9am???

10 on a Sunday. In theory, 9 on a Saturday is OK, but we waited til 10 this morning.

Pinkgin00 · 30/05/2026 19:48

After 9am, I would expect most people would be awake from this time.

JontyGentooey · 30/05/2026 19:48

Haha I asked Chatgpt this very question this morning and was told 9am at the earliest. I cut mine at 9.30. Neighbours didn't seem to care. Some of them let yappy dogs out far earlier than that.

Agreed. It might not be a byelaw but it's nice to have one quiet day a week.

Its my only day off. It has to be Sunday. It might be nice for you but not realistic for others.

I'd have said 8am, that's hardly the crack of dawn.

Support12 · 30/05/2026 20:06

9am on a saturday, 10am on a Sunday

Ha, I love the range of comments on this.

The 7am/8am crowd - you’re sociopaths 😂😂

To those saying do it tonight - not possible unfortunately. I literally have a window tomorrow morning to get it done.

To those saying it’s not hot tomorrow - who knows, maybe it will cool down. But the crux of question could still stand on any hot or cold day… what is the earliest acceptable time on a Sunday morning?

I think 9.30/10.00 seems to be acceptable by the majority??

Yep; 0930/1000 is perfect. It’s nice that you care.

Quokka2 · 30/05/2026 20:23

You don't need to worry beyond 9am

dizzydizzydizzy · 30/05/2026 20:26

look on your council website. Mine says 10am on Sundays for DIY. I know this is mowing the lawn but it is a very loud and annoying noise, similar to DIy.

NCTDN · 30/05/2026 20:40

Well there you go. I never knew that the council website world give that info. Here’s mine :
residents mowing their lawns on Sundays are generally advised by xxx Borough council environnemental health to wait until 9:00 AM to avoid causing a nuisance.
While the exact earliest time isn't strictly defined by a specific bylaw, noise nuisance laws apply <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=web&rct=j&url=www.netmums.com/home-garden/the-exact-time-you-should-mow-the-lawn-on-saturdays-to-avoid-neighbour-rows-damaged-grass-and-council-fines&ved=2ahUKEwiyrbWv4eGUAxW6ZkEAHWEdNLsQy_kOegoIAggACAAIBRAC&opi=89978449&cd&psig=AOvVaw0Eop0y9UIh09C_Llin8d28&ust=1780256222787000" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Environmental Protection Act 1990.

I'm also surprised by local bylaws. Looks like we could have some fun with these.

In my city I'm specifically prohibited from taking a bull aged more than 10 months old for a walk unless I keep it under control. Can anyone beat that?

The earliest acceptable time for annoying noise is 9 am, all days of the week.

8am

Too early

Bristolandlazy · 30/05/2026 21:25

Ten is early enough, Sunday is a day of rest, lie in day for many people. One person can ruin lots of other people's Sunday morning.

BashfulClam · 30/05/2026 21:27

In France on a Sunday you can only mow between 10&12. I wish we had the same laws when wine fucker starts up a mower at 8 on a weekend. I want a long lie!

Just to jump on this.. what time do people think is acceptable to mow until in the evening? We are very much an ‘asleep by 9.30.. up at 5.30’ family during the week due to toddler and work etc. My neighbour mows his lawn until 9pm/10pm any time it’s hot (and therefore all windows are open!) and I’ve been raging about it every time but not sure if this is more normal 😂

Robogob · 30/05/2026 21:33

Not before 10am on a Sunday.

Magpiegrave · 30/05/2026 21:35
Bjorkdidit · 30/05/2026 21:36

People mow their lawns when they have time to do it and the weather is right.

Sometimes that's 9.30/10 pm at this time of year. There's lots of other noises that are annoying, dogs, children, music etc.

But surely I could say the same about doing it at 8am on a Sunday which a lot of people seem to think is abhorrent?

Obviously I wouldn’t do that but just feels a bit inconsiderate when there seems to be unwritten rules about morning mowing!

It’s a minefield isn’t it? A lot of young kids are in bed for 7, but I don’t think many people would say that no one should make any noise after 7pm in case it woke babies/kids up. Yet people generally agree that adults shouldn’t be woken in the morning.
We’re early to bed and early risers due to a disabled child. In the summer our neighbours regularly have guests round in their garden and they keep us awake until midnight ish, yet it would be frowned upon for my disabled child to play in the garden and potentially wake them at 7am.
Realistically, neighbour noise is just a fact of life.

FruAashild · 30/05/2026 21:44

You always get the night owls on these kind of threads who insist anything before 12pm is antisocial (but don't seem to realise that means they should make no noise after 6pm in return because of baby bedtimes). Realistically, 8am is perfectly legal but most people will wait till 9am. Surely most people sleep in the front bedroom though and so won't be affected by someone mowing the lawn before they get up? Personally I don't find garden noise annoying.

But what if the only time you have to do it is 8am on a Sunday?

Bjorkdidit · 30/05/2026 21:49

So that's when they do it. I wouldn't do it then because the grass will probably be wet so it will take ages to cut.

To clarify my previous post was about what it said in local bylaws, which few people take heed of.

mooseybroon · 30/05/2026 22:03

Absolutely no earlier than 10am and I would suggest 11am is far more reasonable.

9am
