To ask for suncream recommendations because I am sick to death of covering every inch of my body?

I am 99% sure my mother has lied to me about my father and she actually procreated with Casper the friendly Ghost.

I am so pale that I am translucent in places. I turn pink within seconds in the sun. Yesterday I was out for probably a grand total of an hour in a vest and im still pink. I used SPF50.

Ironically I love the sun and I am a heat seeker. I cannot stand wearing long trousers and tops all day, especially when I’m active in the sun. Ideally it’ll be a mist that I can spray over my shoulders while out and about to keep coverage up, but I think at this point I need an industrial strength one. Any recommendations?!

Don't use The Altruist sun cream as it turns you green and also has zero protection. It is
recommended/advertised a lot on Mumsnet

Why do you say it gives you zero protection?

I swear by Dermalogica Sport spf 50 cream. It isn’t cheap, but absolutely amazing. Rubs in beautifully and I’ve never burned whilst wearing it, 🤗

I’ve been using Boots Soltan factor 50 for a few years on me (Irish heritage very fair) and my very pale husband and therefore we made very pale blond hair, blue eyed children 🫣

We went to theme parks the last three days and only topped up once a day. Everyone is still white 😂

I absolutely recommend solar buddies as an application method (to the point people think I’m on commission, I’m not they are just amazing! My childminder bought them after seeing the one I sent to hers for DD). DD (5) and DS (9) can apply their own using it and do an amazing job as shown by neither of them burning.

I find the liquid creams work better than the sprays on us.

This is by no way a brag or humble brag of any kind but for context we’ve been to Thailand, Maldives and Greece in high season last couple of years and I absolutely swear by Aldi’s factor 50 spray. It’s better than anything else I’ve tried both supermarket and high end!

I agree with you. I like the Aldi sun cream and I am very fair with red hair.
I have lived in Spain and did not cover up (I hate being sweaty and covered), and the kids wear normal swim wear, as I did at their age.
Nobody has burned. Well darker skinned DH did, because he didn't put enough on or reapply it.

Clothing wickes sweat away from your body, keeping you cooler compared to naked skin. Even with spf skin can only tolerate so much UV each day, no matter how much spf people apply.

Spray protection still needs rubbing in to work effectively, it will also stain and damage your clothes unless completely dry when you dress, which won’t be happening when out and about.

My husband is very pale, he can manage about 1.5hrs a day with well applied spf50.

ParentsTrapped · Yesterday 21:37

@itstoohottofunction I am very pale (Irish redhead) so I do understand the issue. I wear LaRoche Posay Anthelios on my face and then just slather factor 50 kids suncream everywhere else. However, I would never ever expose shoulders/décolletage in the sun - I just cover up.

I don’t really understand what you’re saying about discomfort - think about what people wear in hot countries around the world - it typically involves lots of material. Provided it is natural fibres and loose fitting this is actually more comfortable and less sweaty than exposed skin. It’s much easier to throw on a linen shirt than to struggle to rub suncream into your own back.

Summersongroses · Yesterday 21:40

My nickname is Chalky…. I use the Garnier Amber Soleil Sensitive F 50. It’s the only one that doesn’t make my skin come out in hives in the sun. I also wear a rash vest in the poll and sit in the shade!!! I bought a long handled gadget for applying sun cream on my back as I solo travel, it wasn’t perfect but it did the job. I feel for you as I’m in the same boat!

RumNotRun · Yesterday 21:47

I am also corpse pale. Years ago I won a hamper of the whole Ultrasun range. I took a few of them on holiday to Jamaica, applied 30-60 minutes before leaving the house and didn't burn at all which was a miracle! I'd been to Jamaica the previous year, used normal sum cream (probably Nivea) and burned so badly that I had to buy cropped trousers and an oversized t-shirt to wear every day.

I cannot recommend P20 (the brand, but the factor 30 or 50 one) enough. It’s slimy and it stains white clothes yellow but my god it works. You could have been describing me with your opening post but ever since I heard about this it’s been the only suncream I will ever use. It holds up perfectly under Florida in August sun. It doesn’t need reapplying either as it’s a once daily so that solves your reapplying alone problem. I swear by it so much that on one Florida trip, when the airline misplaced by bag with it in, I got my mum to overnight me some out as they don’t sell it in America.

Everyone's different. That one didn't work for me at all ! I got burnt wearing it

Boots Soltan Once (Kids one is good for sensitive skin).

SellFridges · Yesterday 22:03

I am also a fan of Soltan Once. I apply the Factor 50 in a morning and may need to top up vulnerable bits a few hours later but I be never burnt through it.

Ultrasun 50+.

itstoohottofunction · Yesterday 12:26

Yes it is. I need to be able to apply to my back while alone.

Sprays and mists don’t give enough coverage though.

PS5Gamer · Yesterday 22:20

I am almost translucent, Ultrasun 50+ works the best for me. The oil is amazing.

suggestionswelcomed · Yesterday 22:26

I am regularly in 40+ degrees. UV sleeves are cooling and avoid the need for sunscreen on the covered parts. Wide brimmed hats with a long back work well too. I usually use a SPF 50+ zinc based mineral sunscreen.

When you're in your 50s, you'll wish you just covered up. It's less faff than reapplying sunscreens everywhere all the time too.

Maybe I will, or maybe I won’t.

I’ve lost a lot of weight and I’m tired of hiding my body behind big oversized shapeless outfits

I really like hearing this! I feel like a lot of recommendations are just so expensive

Altruist here. I find the spray bottle easier than the tube of cream, but it still needs rubbing in not like a mist. Feels totally unsticky and leaves no white marks when inevitably touching clothing when reapplying.

It's worth it to protect yourself, especially your more exposed areas. The consequences aren't worth going for anything other than the best. Not to say cheap can't also be excellent.

The best is sometimes out of reach for those of us who can’t afford £60 on suncream for one trip

ForeverTheOptomist · Yesterday 22:52

I've got really sensitive skin, but it's easier now than it was when I was a child.

I tend to use Piz Buin. They do an all day one which is less labour intensive.

It's costing more than that for my DH to get a couple of spots chopped off his face on Friday, which are probably nothing but just in case. I'm sure there are good cheaper options. He's just always been a bit slack with covering up.

Alturist. Went to watch the cricket earlier this week - all day sitting in the sun.

My teenage dd doesnt tend to burn (her dad is asian). My skin will burn on a cloudy November day. Dd begrudgingly sprayed herself with some nivea factor 50 mist before we left the house, but i still noticed her shoulders pinking up a bit after a couple of hours of sitting in full on sun. Id slathered myself in alturist and magically didn't burn at all. Not even my cheeks and nose.

I do find alturist a bit of a bugger to rub in, it goes on thick and white but eventually seeps in and disappears. Worth the hassle for the not getting burnt protection though.

I’ve got such pale skin I glow under UV lights. No joke!
I swear by the Soltan One Day long factor 30 spray for the first morning application when I’m in a hot climate. It’s lighter than the cream version I find the factor 30 works just as well as the 50 without the extra claggy feeling. This really does protect my skin for hours, but it is a bit oily and does stain clothes. I do try to spend as much time in the shade where possible though.

I also use the Biore UV Aqua Rich watery essence spf 50 - specifically the Japanese NOT the British one - on days I’m wearing white clothing as it doesn’t stain and feels like nothing on the skin when it’s dried down. Annoyingly the one that’s available in boots isn’t the same and does stain. I have to buy that from a specific website and it takes ages to arrive but it’s the absolute best I’ve tried although it doesn’t last as long as the soltan one day long so needs reapplication. For anyone that has sensory issues with suncream I can’t recommend this one more highly.

I like the soltan dry spray for a quick shoulder and arm top up.

I love biore but haven't noticed a difference between any particular country's products...? Where do you get your Japanese version?
