To ask for suncream recommendations because I am sick to death of covering every inch of my body?

I am 99% sure my mother has lied to me about my father and she actually procreated with Casper the friendly Ghost.

I am so pale that I am translucent in places. I turn pink within seconds in the sun. Yesterday I was out for probably a grand total of an hour in a vest and im still pink. I used SPF50.

Ironically I love the sun and I am a heat seeker. I cannot stand wearing long trousers and tops all day, especially when I’m active in the sun. Ideally it’ll be a mist that I can spray over my shoulders while out and about to keep coverage up, but I think at this point I need an industrial strength one. Any recommendations?!

Hello, another vampire.

i use ambre Solaire sp50 (or 30 and reapply regularly) but i also put shine brown on top.

i have no idea why, but since i started doing that last year, ive not burned once.

did it to my daughter yesterday and the only
place she went a bit pink was the tops of her feet where we hadn’t applied it?

Is that a tan enhancer?

I’m the same as you and Aldi factor 50 has always done the job!

I am a pale pale person, and my poor kids are even paler. I survived a full day at a theme park yesterday using Nivea invisible finish 50 cream (for my DD who doesn’t like sprays) and Nivea 50 protect dry touch spray. I highly recommend.

I’m pale too and work outside so have a double whammy - Soltan Factor 50 reapplied every two hours works perfectly. I never burn.

bumptybum · Yesterday 12:51

First of all, are you using the right quantities. So many people think if it’s an spf 50 then if they apply any amount of it then they will be getting the spf 50.

obviously that makes no sense. You need to use 2 mg per cm² of skin to get the stated spf. Studies show that in reality most people use about 0.5mg per cm2 of skin.

the correct amount is roughly

  • 2.5 fingers on the face and neck,
  • 8 fingers on the chest and back,
  • 4 fingers on each arm,
  • 1 finger on each hand,
  • 6 fingers on each leg,
  • 2 fingers on each foot

by fingers it’s what is shown in this image. It’s not exact but close enough.

it will likely seem a ridiculous amount at first but that’s what is needed. Otherwise it’s no surprise if people get burnt. And of course clothes rubbing, swimming, towelling off, sitting on surfaces, sweating all remove it so it needs to be reapplied regularly.

That’s why it’s often more achievable to apply and then after it’s dried also wear a loose linen short or similar and a hat with a wide brim.

those sprays are close to useless unless you hold them so close you are squirting more than spraying and then you have to rub it in anyway. Studies have shown that spray typically results in an spf 50 ending up actually providing an uneven coverage of between spf 7&14

I’m glad they actually exist!

I’ve just been for a walk in ankle length trousers and a t-shirt and it’s so hot that I need to find a good SPF, I can’t cover myself like this everyday

I have acne, Rosacea and also eczema on my face, so have to be very careful in the sun.
I always use Ultrasun. 50+ .Its advertised on QVC.I got a set of 3 , face.body and a lip sunscreen for about £30.
Its good stuff.

Dermatologists don’t recommend mists afaik.

too difficult to actually know whether you’ve applied enough (and most people definitely do not apply enough at all). Sunscreen mists will also disperse, so quite a bit may not land on your skin.

Are you applying enough? Most people don’t.
Use waterproof sunscreen and apply much more than you think you need. And check the use by date of your sunscreens!

A cream will be fine for the morning. My issue is that when I can’t get myself naked while I’m out and about and use a take tan mit & back reaching tool, I’ll be buggered

Nivea kids spray - goes on green but then turns clear. Factor 50. It’s brilliant.

traitorstraitors · Yesterday 13:26

But regardless of what sunscreen you get you will need to cover every inch of your body that’s exposed to the sun?

Which? regularly update their testing on suncreams.

The most recent I can find suggests best buys (ie must pass all the SPF tests) were in order:

Garnier
Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced Sun Spray SPF 50+

Nivea Sun
Protect & Moisture Lotion SPF30

Boots
Soltan Protect & Moisturise Spray SPF30

Sainsbury's
Sun Protect Moisturising Spray Lotion SPF50+

Hope one of these helps.

The same test has a couple of “don’t buys” - each of them failed aspects of testing:
Morrisons Moisturising Sun Spray SPF30
Ultrasun Family SPF30
Asda Protect Moisturising Sun Lotion SPF30

Performance and price were not closely correllated.

why would you have to get yourself naked to reapply sunscreen to exposed areas?

My dermatologist doesn’t recommend mists / sprays (and a quick internet search seems to agree with her).

But if the sunscreen sprays work for you? Fantastic. 🤷‍♀️

Because I can’t reach that far down, I don’t want to get it all my clothes, and im not going to carry a scabby fake tan mitt around to re-apply!

The key is to reapply constantly OP. Get a good aerosol sun cream and just keep spraying it on every 30 mins or so. Doesn't matter how good your SPF is, if you don't keep it topped up then you'll get burnt.

Are you wearing something backless in the sun all day? You either need to bring a suncream applying friend or cover up or go indoors out of the peak UV times.

Yes that is why I copied out the top results - what extra info do you need? All the top five passed the sun tests, do you need allergy/ingredient type info (I have access)?

Strappy tops yes. I’m travelling solo.

I am paler than casper and turn bright red in minutes.

Parsol p20 in 50+ as your base layer all over then spray down with a clear waterproof spray - Lidl’s is surprisingly good.

Let each layer dry in before you add the next.

Spray new layer before you leave the house then top up hourly.

A big hat also helps keep sun off the back of your neck and shoulders!
