To ask for suncream recommendations because I am sick to death of covering every inch of my body?

I am 99% sure my mother has lied to me about my father and she actually procreated with Casper the friendly Ghost.

I am so pale that I am translucent in places. I turn pink within seconds in the sun. Yesterday I was out for probably a grand total of an hour in a vest and im still pink. I used SPF50.

Ironically I love the sun and I am a heat seeker. I cannot stand wearing long trousers and tops all day, especially when I’m active in the sun. Ideally it’ll be a mist that I can spray over my shoulders while out and about to keep coverage up, but I think at this point I need an industrial strength one. Any recommendations?!

Yes that is why I copied out the top results - what extra info do you need? All the top five passed the sun tests, do you need allergy/ingredient type info (I have access)?

I’m just curious to read so see if I’ve used any of the bad ones!🤣

P20 smells and is a pain to put on but it’s always worked for me, even on the beach, and I don’t reapply through the day

Malibu do a factor 50 kids clear oil spray that I really like (I use it too!).

I traveled around Australia one summer where temperatures reached 45 degrees. I am very sensitive to the sun. I used E45 SPF 50 and never got burned at all. I was so impressed that I wrote to the company afterwards and told them, something I’ve not done before or since.

Because I can’t reach that far down, I don’t want to get it all my clothes, and im not going to carry a scabby fake tan mitt around to re-apply!

I wouldn’t carry a fake tan mitt around either (don’t even own one, tbh).

I suppose I simply have a somewhat difficult time picturing your clothing-situation. Do you prefer backless tops?

I just don’t see how reapplication would be an issue with regular shortsleeved shirts or vest tops.

But you could just try the spray sunscreens and test whether they offer enough protection?

I am northern Scottish celt and as our God Billy Connolly says, we have to warm up through blue and grey before we even get to white.

I swear by Reimann spf 50 but only the sensitive skin version. I get it on Amazon and it lasts so well and I never burn.

Looking down the list they cover the big names like Ambre, Nivea, Piz Buin and all the main supermarket brands. The three above are the only three from those categories which outright failed.

The tests cover SPF labelling accuracy, performance on UVA and UVB at least up to British and EU standards as well as fuzzier points like ease of application and how it sits on the skin. The top five passed all the tests and did reasonably on the fuzzier points.

I think the shocking point was that one of the failures is 30 quid a bottle!

I’m guessing OP is like me and burns through clothing and needs to reapply under it or at least the edges of clothing

Snakesontheplane · Yesterday 13:44

why are you so determined never to cover up? If you are this pale, surely this is the the most sensible thing to do during the hottest part of the day? Sorry to be blunt, but I’ve just had skin cancer. We all need to cover up. And to be clear, I’ve always used sun cream (just obviously not as well as well as I had thought).

Plsudb · Yesterday 13:47

I am extremely pale and don’t expose my shoulders in this kind of weather - absolute no-no, cream not a substitute for covering.

PortSalutPlease · Yesterday 13:47

I am ginger. Here are a few things that work for me:

  1. layering. I use a serum, moisturiser, primer and body lotion that all have a high SPF.
  2. a clear sun mist spray is the answer to all your back coverage and reapplying woes - Ambre Solaire is the best but the Asda, Tesco and Aldi ones are all decent. Because you don’t need to rub it in and it doesn’t stain clothes you can just spray it everywhere with wild abandon to make sure you’re covered.
  3. don’t forget your scalp! You can get specialist scalp ones or use a lightweight one like the ambre solaire over make up mist.
  4. even with all the spf in the world, you should still be covering up at the hottest part of the day, and taking breaks from the sun.

Have you tried a UV umbrella? I’d still use sunscreen if out for a long period, but if it’s just a walk, or bbq/beer garden, these can be good. Very common in east Asia and there are nice styles. Doubles as a rain umbrella. You just have to put up with idiots yelling at you that it’s not raining…

Used this yesterday as a redhead, didn’t burn
it’s a mist

Seconded! I use this on my very, very pale teenager who has sensitive/reactive skin and it’s bloody brilliant.

I just stick my hand slightly under the edges of clothing and rub in the sunscreen. I suppose some people may not feel comfortable doing that in public but I personally believe that the benefits (sun protection) are far too good… 🤷‍♀️

Do you burn under all kinds of (summer appropriate) fabric? Or only the super thin, light ones?

itstoohottofunction · Yesterday 13:50

I just don’t want to faff about with cream. I just want a mist for the day time to make reapplication easier to

Altruist. I've never burned with it even in the Maldives. I would never trust a spray on sunscreen, and they still need to be rubbed in anyway.

Girlwithavibe · Yesterday 13:52

I'm super pale and I have ginger hair I used P20 factor 50 avoid direct sun and ways sit in the shade !
I'm in and out the house alot I'm still super pale !

I’m much the same OP. Try French sunscreens, they tend to be pretty good. La Roche Posay Anthelios for the face is fantastic and make up goes over the top of it really easily. I’ve also used Bioderma Photoderm Paediatrics spray on myself and my similarly cursed 11 year old in the brutal August Florida sunshine without either of us burning. This one sinks in really nicely and leaves my skin feeling moisturised rather than greasy/slimy. Mists just don’t cut it for us, we’ve used Banana boat mists in the past and they’ve been useless and feel greasy and horrible. Also worth trying Malibu scalp sunscreen spray, which is great and smells delicious, plus the Garnier over make up spray sunscreen, but I always start with the LRP face sunscreen before I put my make up on and then just top up with the spray throughout the day. All factor 50, goes without saying!

Girlwithavibe · Yesterday 13:53

Cream is better than the sprays that's when miss spots also the sprays ruin nail polish !!!

Redhead. Unless it’s actual UV clothing and a parasol, I burn
currently hiding inside

Sunscreen only delays sunburn. It doesn’t prevent it.

For example, if you burn in 10 minutes, then SPF 30 should stop you burning for 300 minutes IF applied perfectly and you haven’t sweated or rubbed any of it off.

You are still far better off wearing a hat and long sleeve shirt.

My favourite sunscreen as someone who burns in 10 minutes is Altruist SPF 30. I generally find that SPF 50 doesn’t feel as nice on my skin, and it’s a very small amount of additional protection (97 vs 98% of UV rays blocked).

BeardofHagrid · Yesterday 13:58

I wouldn’t use a spray sunscreen! I have heard they are not safe for our lungs (nano particles).

This. I’m very pale and have had two bouts of skin cancer, both on my face. On days like today I wear factor 50 on my face and neck (I do this every day), a hat and a long very thin cotton dress - I find that much cooler than bare skin. I don’t sit in the sun.

I know this isn’t what you want to do but it works for me!

P20 is highly recommended with trail runners.

All day on the Ridgeway, Sun from above and reflecting off the trail and not a hint of burning.
