British behaviour in holiday hotel

We are staying at a good all inclusive resort (yes, I know all inclusive is not high end, but this is about as good a one as you can get). I am just shocked and ashamed at fellow british people at breakfast time. Letting their kids make a huge mess by allowing them to get their own food. Huge amounts of wasted food. Multiple untouched plates left on tables. Total disregard for others barging round, blocking walkways etc. When did this become ok?? AIBU with expectations? Bear in mind this is not a cheap rubbish tui-blue type place. I dread to think what they are like!

I need to know where OP is staying. My money is on one of the cheaper IKOS. Maybe Sani.

And there was me feeling happy that I might actually be able to stretch the budget this year and go to a tui blue hotel.

They’re lovely. Beautiful pools, modern clean rooms. Lovely food and nice à la carte options too. Have a lovely time 😊

Ferreting · 26/05/2026 12:52

For people, for whom other people are hell, there are villas. There are even such things as catered villas. There are remote versions of each.

The staff aren't there to parent guests children and 'correct behaviour', and i can imagine a thread on here 'the hotel staff told my children off, how dare they'.

Yes, they should be checking and cleaning areas at intervals, but if as a parent you aren't confident that your child won't make a mess if they go up on their own, then need to accompany them.

The restaurant manager runs the restaurant. He directs staff if guests aren't behaving as they should. I've been on AI and Staff have told adult guests, not to stereotype but it's always been Russians, for the behaviour described, it is the job of the staff to see that hygiene protocols are followed. Especially if it is a decent hotel. Likewise it's always had to be Spanish guests that have been asked to confine were they smoke. The grounds people keep an eye out for H&S breaches, the pool supervisors have their roles. I don't know what type of places you visit were it is a free for all. Although, very often the German guests are built like brick outhouses, so a bit of pushing in the queue is just laughed at.

I’ve done two AI many years ago. One in Sardinia and one in Cuba where AI was the only option. DD’s school broke up a couple of weeks before state schools so we usually went then when prices were a bit cheaper. Only other children around were Scottish who also broke up earlier. It was all fine until our flight failed to leave due to a broken part which had to take the long way round as nothing could go via the USA so we ended up staying an extra three days. OMG the change in the place when the English arrived en masse. Shit in the pool. Food chucked everywhere, all night drinking and shouting in and round the pool. Effing and jeffing on balconies and shouting to mates across the complex.

And the wasted food was shocking.

Yes I’m a snob.

So English children are feral and Scottish children are angels? Sorry I’m not buying it and I’m Welsh 😂

This isn't my experience of Sani at all.

I've done AI 4 times with my family (2 in Greece, 1 Turkey, 1 Mexico) - yes it is the lazy option because you know what, I'm bloody exhausted from working full time and when I go away the last thing I want to do is hunt round local mini marts to cobble together a meal everyone will eat that I'll then have to wash up after. However my experiences have always been fantastic overall - great food and drink, good facilities, super convenient and low stress. I have noticed gluttony - people piling up a plate high with pastries / doughnuts at breakfast then leaving most of them untouched (eyes bigger than bellies) - and that bothers me but it's a minority and certainly not all Brits abroad. The place we stayed in Turkey was 90% Russian guests and it was shortly after the Ukraine invasion so that was the most unpleasant part for me (plus I got a bit fed up of dill on every salad - still not sure if that's Turkish, Russian or both)

Maddy70 · 26/05/2026 12:54

I live in a seaside place in Spain. As soon as the summer holidays begin the Brits stand out like a sore thumb , it's so embarrassing. Loud. Drunk no attempt to even say gracias (I'm not expecting fluency on a holiday but common courtesy)
Us and the Americans are dreadful (obviously there are lovely exceptions!

AMumWithWiFi · 26/05/2026 12:55

We went on our first AI holiday last year to a hotel that OP would not touch with a barge pole by the sounds of it. I haven’t experienced any of this behaviour. The children were generally well behaved and we didn’t have problems with people not queuing either. Maybe OP needs to pick a different type of holiday.

Nothing wrong with a TUI blue hotel. Problem is MN loves an Ikos hotel and anything else is slumming it.

Funny isnt it how people are only allowed to criticise the British, well specifically English. Call out any other nationality and you are immediately slammed as being racist. I find the French particularly obnoxious but just give them a wide berth.
Despite the fact everyone seems to hate British people, including our current government, every fucker and his dog wants to be here!!

There’s literally another post trending about similar behaviour in the UK during the bank holiday, so it very much has a consistent pattern, both abroad and in house.

I live near a bus stop that caters to the high school nearby and the place is absolutely fucking filthy every damn day because apparently these kids can’t comprehend the concept of not littering. I’ve never seen it anything like this anywhere else and I’ve lived in small towns and cities in two other countries.

Every country has their problems and bad tourists, but the UK does seem to have a problem with lack of consideration for the space around you, which then just gets exacerbated on holidays.

summershere99 · 26/05/2026 12:59

I think that is pretty standard behaviour in an AI resort, no matter how ‘upmarket’ or expensive.

I’ve only done one AI and I’m not inclined to do it again. Breakfast is a mass buffet designed to feed hundreds of people all with very different levels of hygiene/ etiquette.

Whosthetabbynow · 26/05/2026 13:00

Not all AI are like this. Go adults only.

Of course, Pinocchio. This absolutely happened exactly as you described. 🤥 🤣🤣🤣

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 26/05/2026 11:05

Ditto with living next door to other people then complaining that aren't SILENTLY using their own garden.

OP isn’t asking for anything more than basic manners and basic considerate behaviour and for parents to realise that little kids can’t get their own food because they will make a mess and make the buffet section unpleasant for other paying guests.

Expecting basic manners from people is not unreasonable or the same as expecting silence in a garden with NDN’s.

Wasn't there an old advert for one of the holiday companies where the kids all loomed on the horizon, wearing goggles and rubber rings and such, and then ran slow-mo to the pool? I was picturing exactly that 🤣

Always book villas, self catering or boutique hotels abroad. And actually I actively look for smaller or more off the beaten track places to avoid Brits full stop 😂

I said maybe we should try AI next time so I can really chill out and do nothing but everything described here is the horror I imagine from AI. Would not be my idea of a holiday at all. There must be some that are good (if anyone can recommend one please!)

YANBU @Scarfitwere - you would expect people to have some sort of decency but there you are. Sorry you are experiencing this.

Krazylegs21 · 26/05/2026 13:11

Ime I've found that the 'high end' hotels are worse for this behaviour. I've found the 'cheaper' 3 hotels have less 'entitled' behaviour and friendlier people. We recently stayed in a large beautiful 5 hotel in Greece and vowed never again. Smaller and cheaper from now on, and that's down to the attitudes of most (not all) guests.

ACR7 · 26/05/2026 13:15

You had me agreeing until the ‘cheap and rubbish TUI blue’ comment. Makes you sound snobby and tone deaf as you must realise that there will be plenty on here who don’t consider them cheap at all. I had a lovely week at one in gran caneria last year. Spending more money doesn’t equate to better people/parenting.

vitahelp · 26/05/2026 13:16

I’ll never complain about Brit kids again after our last holiday where we had to deal with some mental Russian kids - an 8 year old girl squaring up to me in the pool for being in their part of the pool, never experienced anything like it! That was a very expensive hotel in exotic location as well so not a budget one.

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 26/05/2026 13:16

Just thinking about the ‘cheap tui blue’ that would cost me £6k for my family of 5 in school holidays 😂

You’ve hit the nail on the head - very wealthy parents often leave their kids to run wild. I can only assume they are used to having a nanny there.

Woahtherehoney · 26/05/2026 11:08

Please don’t call TUI blue type places cheap and rubbish. They are still over £3k for a holiday and is the best that people can afford - don’t shit on others!
