British behaviour in holiday hotel

We are staying at a good all inclusive resort (yes, I know all inclusive is not high end, but this is about as good a one as you can get). I am just shocked and ashamed at fellow british people at breakfast time. Letting their kids make a huge mess by allowing them to get their own food. Huge amounts of wasted food. Multiple untouched plates left on tables. Total disregard for others barging round, blocking walkways etc. When did this become ok?? AIBU with expectations? Bear in mind this is not a cheap rubbish tui-blue type place. I dread to think what they are like!

We go to a ‘Tui blue place’ that is adults only and really quite lovely. But we go adults only because we can and because when we didn’t we were on the receiving end of badly behaved children and parents who paid no attention to their children.

Money doesn't buy class, OP.
Read into that what you will.

In my experience British people are not as you describe.

Perhaps you’ve never experienced German, French or Italian hotel guests at breakfast. Or increasingly Russians.

70Cats · 26/05/2026 11:53

Would never again go on AI. It was full of drunks.

In Malta, Russians were increasingly getting that reputation a few years ago.

Maybe i'm wrong about tui blue. What i mean is the places with big film characters dressed up, people drinking to excess, feral kids etc. If valuing polite, decent and considerate behaviour makes me a snob then I guess I am.

I am an even bigger snob. Wouldn’t go AI if it was free. Genuinely.

What's wrong with letting kids get their own food?

How long have you got?

GasPanic · 26/05/2026 11:59

The whole point of going AI is to be lazy. No thinking. No effort. Just trooping backwards and forwards between the pool and the dining hall.

So probably not surprising that a load of slackers turn up.

You were either in a tui.hotel or not surely you know who you booked with?

@Scarfitwere YANBU!! I'd be mortified to be English!

This is why I stay in a half board hotel that will be mostly foreign people there and just a handful of "well trained" English! The uncouth don't tend to bother with places where they don't speak English and serve "foreign stuff" to eat! My kids are well trained and polite!

I'm a teacher in a state secondary school and I really think we need to go back to basics with parenting, and give parents a guide book on how to raise a child!! We took a Y7 residential trip with 100 kids, and the amount of kids who can't use a knife and fork, don't sit at a table to eat, take more food than they intend to eat etc... is shocking. We also banned phones, and the kids didn't know how to socialise. By the end of the week, they were finally having a laugh about the stuff they'd done all week rather than talking about what someone else had done on TikTok.

“Foreign’ and ‘English”?..please ,please just stay at home for the sake of us oiks.

If you are going to go on holiday somewhere where there are lots of people, you will always encounter undesirable behaviour to some extent. It sounds like you need to go somewhere more isolated, where this sort of thing can't get to you and ruin your holiday.

I usually do UK breaks (disabled son) in a cottage for this reason. I need people to tolerate my son (who can't help his disabilities) as much I need to tolerate other people being people.

You have to work out what you value more - a convenient package holiday in the sun, or somewhere more isolated away from behaviour you don't like. Sadly you can't have it all.

I think OP's point is that it's Brits. It's usually Brits, and it's down to poor parenting. We used to have a holiday chalet in France in a place not generally frequented by Brits. It was lovely and relaxed, civilised and quiet, even with lots of French, Dutch and German families around. I remember one day, at the Centre Nautique in the town, there was a rowdy bunch playing a stereo and trampling the flowers. The behavior was so out of character for the place and drew lots of attention. I was so ashamed when it became obvious they were English. We are, sadly, as a society, shameless and proud.

Honestly I don’t think it’s the price of the resort that’s the problem. I’ve stayed in AI hotels in Benidorm and the mams (and dads) are on it helping their kids. You sound like a frightful snob.

I assume that was not the Flamingo Oasis then, I stayed there around 15 years ago and still grimace when I think about the place!

What's wrong with letting kids get their own food?

Unreasonable waste is wrong.

There is nothing wrong with a child getting their own food. There is something very wrong if a parent fails to parent them IF they get so much as too waste.

I think we all know the difference

Funiculus · 26/05/2026 12:05

@Dollymylove

Funny isnt it how people are only allowed to criticise the British, well specifically English. Call out any other nationality and you are immediately slammed as being racist. I find the French particularly obnoxious but just give them a wide berth.
Despite the fact everyone seems to hate British people, including our current government, every fucker and his dog wants to be here!!

Literally took the words out of my mouth

Sorry I posted twice there. But 💯 agree with you @Dollymylove

Ablondiebutagoody · 26/05/2026 12:09

Judgemental snob

Metromayhem · 26/05/2026 12:11

TUI blue is upper mid range to premium. Me and my husband stayed in an adults only Tui blue last year and it cost £1600 each for a week in low season!! Hardly cheap. Stop being snobby to try and make yourself sound better than you are, nobody’s buying it.
YABU. There are badly behaved people of all nationalities. My children are capable of getting their own food sensibly, not going to stop them because you don’t like it.

So you are seeing multiple examples of this behaviour every day and at every meal time? Realistically, how many families is it and how nosy are you that you can confirm that they are all British? You might find you'll be able to relax enjoy your holiday if you stop gawping at the other guests and analysing their every move. There is always going to be waste from a buffet and people including adults who barge in. It's probably in your best interests to purchase your own villa and hire a private chef to save mingling with the riff raff. Oh and charter a private jet while you're at it as you're clearly a person of means!

What's wrong with letting kids get their own food?

Dirty hands, to start with, they handle handles with them. Often their little fingers also stray into the food, they lick them and repeat. They are not as tidy around the hotplate and salad bar, leaving a trail of food behind. When they carry their plates, they are a hazard, as few of them know how to move carefully. I accompanied mine to the food stations, asking them - what would you like and then put it on their plate.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 26/05/2026 12:15

We go adults only Tui blue & we've always had a great holiday. No scrum at mealtimes, minimal mess.

What you're describing is poor parenting and that happens regardless of the money you have.

You sound like a real snob OP.

Backedoffhackedoff · 26/05/2026 12:16

Wait until you see the Russians/ Germans/ Dutch, you’ll keel over 😆

Backedoffhackedoff · 26/05/2026 12:17

Btw it’s not 2003 anymore, no AI holiday is cheap
