AIBU to resent the mess and antisocial behaviour from bank holiday visitors?

I know I am going to get flamed for this thread, but I have had enough.

I live in a beautiful area, with a lot of tourism, and as such on good weather bank holiday weekends it becomes packed with people from outside of town. No problem with that, I knew when we were buying it was a popular place, and it's good for local business's.

But with it comes rubbish, mess and anti social behavior;

Does anybody else have to put up with this?

Why would you get flamed for that?

it’s perfectly normal and reasonable to expect visitors to your area to take their rubbish home with them and not leave a trail of destruction behind them.

this weekend I’ve seen someone letting their kid potty next to their car parked on our village green and leave the contents and toilet paper behind 🤢

the dog poo bin is overflowing with general waste so people have just piled their bags of rubbish around the bin

theres a load of broken glass on the village cricket pitch from a broken beer bottle where the kids will be playing this weekend.

it is upsetting

I thought you meant people you were hosting!
I used to live in the IOW. Some of my friends in a few towns it’s 80% second homes and they quite enjoy the peace off season, but also enjoy the buzz when all the DFLs arrive! There’s not a lot of mess as they either don’t make any or the town is set up to clean it all up. There’s no antisocial behaviour as such either, at most a bit of noise from the rather inebriated people at the end of the night. One of my friends runs a hotel and two of us rent out holiday homes (mine is on a holiday park), and there’s no issue. Keeps the local economy going (now about those ferry prices…).

I don't know why you think you will be flamed for saying this OP. It's the truth.
So many people have absolutely no respect for the environment.

On our local Facebook page the volunteer litter pickers often post photos of the bags and bags of detritus left by the day visitors. Including multiple towels, items of clothing and toys -just left in the beach. Remnants of barbecues, rubbish, food wrappers. It's disgusting.

And the mindless vandalism in beauty spots is heartbreaking

Definitely Covid seemed to alter a lot of people's mindset into not giving a damn

coulditbeme2323 · 26/05/2026 09:39

The locals don't act like it, people come to visit who couldn't afford to live here and the behavior stinks.

I live just outside a town that is very popular on sunny weekends - I have to stay away. If I go into town today there would inevitably be puddles of sick and so on.

Ah you might get flamed now for mentioning the difference in income between the residents and the visitors who leave mess. Well off people have been known to leave rubbish and plenty of poor people are considerate.

SandwichSuperstar · 26/05/2026 09:44

I know I am going to get flamed for this thread, but I have had enough.

Eh? Why would you get 'flamed'? 😳

There are loads of threads like this every year from people living in tourist spots, who say exactly the same thing.

HangingOver · 26/05/2026 09:45

I feel happy when I see the beach full and people enjoying the gorgeous weather. I felt a bit sorry for them yesterday though, I think when people's airbnbs or hotels are quite a ways away from the beach and parking is competitive people stay out waaaaay longer than they should and get badly burnt. Yes the drunks are a bit annoying. You get the occasional total rotter doing a shit in the sand dunes but generally speaking they have a nice time.

Oh the 'couldn't afford to live here' might get you flamed though...

Mess and antisocial behaviour is just that.

It has nothing to do with anyone's monthly income.

I was at a busy beach yesterday and was upset to see how many bottles were just left on the pebbles some broken glass, so dangerous for people with bare feet. However I would expect the council to employ litter pickers for bank holiday weekends to keep everyone safe.

Bohoskirty · 26/05/2026 09:50

I live in Cornwall and it's been really busy here. I haven't noticed any litter or even any dog poo on beaches.

I'm really impressed actually. ☀️

Monstermissy36 · 26/05/2026 09:51

I’m went for a run at the beach this morning and it was absolutely full of rubbish on the prom, bins overflowing and people had just continued to pile rubbish up next to them. The seagulls have had a field day! Pretty sure the council go and clean it ready for the next lot today though!

how do you know people can’t afford to live where you do… that will get you flamed

We don’t get too much mess here to be fair. Day trippers do, however, seem to be incapable of parking within a single parking space, we have limited parking because many houses are on paths with no car access and it’s very frustrating when people park badly reducing the amount of parking spaces further. Also, they are incapable of walking on the pavement. Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean you can saunter along in the middle of the road. Yes, it is a lovely harbour area, but it’s a working fishing harbour surrounded by houses, there is quite a lot of traffic of people trying to go about their normal lives.

Why can’t people clean up after themselves though. The council will do it - but they shouldn’t have to. Also most of the visitors are from out of area so don’t pay council tax locally- it’s visitors leaving the mess, but locals paying to have it cleaned up.

weareallcats · 26/05/2026 09:56

Don’t be a snob op. It’s the volume of people, not their individual socioeconomic backgrounds.

I was 100% with you until that “couldn’t afford to live here” comment.

It’s poor people you object to

Kadiofakit · 26/05/2026 09:58

I don't even live in a tourist area but suburban London and it really upset me when the local park is turned into a pit. Why on earth do people think it's ok to leave their rubbish. So upsetting and incredibly annoying for us dog walkers. Just waiting for a massive fire as people are bringing bbq's and not putting them out properly

IncompleteSenten · 26/05/2026 10:05

Me too. It is a bloody nightmare.

People chuck their rubbish everywhere, including dirty nappies! Every year there are fires on the moors from disposable bloody bbqs.

We also get selfish parking, yelling, booming music, etc.

I understand its their holiday and im glad they enjoy coming here, and that's great, the local economy needs it but is a little consideration re noise and parking really too much to ask?

Is it too much to ask to not chuck rubbish all over the place?

Is it too much to ask to not leave bbqs that end up starting fires?

I dont get it. They come here because its beautiful and they leave it looking like shit.

Is that what they want to see? Is that where they want to holiday? In a noisy village with rubbish everywhere, booming music, roads blocked with cars, dirty nappies in fields and fire engines on the moors?

Imagine sharing those holiday snaps!

No, its not everyone, of course its not. But its enough people for us to be left clearing up a load of shit every fucking time.

coulditbeme2323 · 26/05/2026 09:52

It really does.

Well no it really doesn't actually.

It's to do with whether people are decent, thoughtful and well mannered.

Not their bank balances.

But the council /gov should be able to provide extra bins etc for a couple of days a year.
our council have removed all lay-by bins to stop people dumping stuff, which has worked -but they could also stick a few more bins out
