AIBU to resent the mess and antisocial behaviour from bank holiday visitors?

I know I am going to get flamed for this thread, but I have had enough.

I live in a beautiful area, with a lot of tourism, and as such on good weather bank holiday weekends it becomes packed with people from outside of town. No problem with that, I knew when we were buying it was a popular place, and it's good for local business's.

But with it comes rubbish, mess and anti social behavior;

Does anybody else have to put up with this?

Because I have eyes.

If everyone who lives there is like you, i'm sure lots of people would happily give it a wide berth.
You sound vile.

There are many countries where littering is practically unheard of and anyone who does is viewed very badly.

Clearly a population can be raised / taught not to litter. So I guess the question is what are such countries doing that we in the UK are not?

While it should be the responsibility of all parents to teach their children not to litter, clearly that isn't happening so maybe it could be taught in schools. Hammered home from an early age, those kids grow up to be adults who don't litter and who teach their children not to litter and over time there is a culture shift resulting in clean streets.

Its got to start somewhere and if people could look at the issue without getting defensive then perhaps it could be solved.

I really don't think this is an income thing, in Bournemouth we have an influx every summer and often from the more affluent/expensive South East. It is galling though to see the place wrecked when so much is spent on maintaining the front.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 26/05/2026 13:31

I live near a big holiday area and spend the summer in my back garden, because the influx of visitors makes everywhere very unpleasant. The mess, the crammed public transport, the feral dogs . . .

tiptoethrutulips · 26/05/2026 13:38

YANBU about antisocial behaviour

I'm just as disgusted at the state of the roads travelling to/from anywhere ... old tyres and rubbish just left rotting alongside every single motorway and A road. Coming back from any of the ferries, litter everywhere along the roads. I've never seen this on the continent, especially the tyres just .... left. We've taken to counting them on our drives. Pretty embarrassing, frankly.

I don't, and don't pretend to.

Then how can you say it’s people who couldn’t afford to live there that have created the issues? Genuine question because your logic isn’t making any sense.

coulditbeme2323 · 26/05/2026 09:52

It really does.

Actually I think you’re wrong there.

I’ve lived in coastal towns (probably even more ‘exclusive’ than yours…! Full of celebrity holiday homes etc) for years, and far and away the worst tourists are the monied London types (not all of them btw, but a noticeable minority).

Not so much litter but they buy expensive toys like boats and have little idea how to use them, or get into trouble in the sea and need the coastguard. Like I said yesterday I had to stop a group of them opening the chain to the bascule bridge - they literally would’ve suffered at best broken legs had I allowed them to continue. The woman (who I will say was expensively dressed) looked at me like she was licking piss off a nettle. Her hubby was a bit more reasonable and persuaded her to put it back. She wouldn’t listen to me of course.

Because some things are obvious, but you know this.

Yes we all know what you mean. But there are too many exceptions to be phrasing it in such a snobby, certain way.

Genuinely wealthy people are usually fairly modest in their appearance, a few super wealthy people I know would be described at best as scruffy. They've either made it and have the approval already or have never had to seek approval from others. Have you never heard the saying 'money talks, wealth whispers?'.

So what are you talking about? What are the identifying features? For example I know you are financially insecure because of the time you commit to talking about money here. So what are your examples?

Let’s not all pretend we don’t know what OP means in an attempt to force the obvious out of her. She means people with regional accents, tattoos, revealing clothes, turkey teeth, fillers, ADIDAS/NIKE everything, deep fake tan etc

It’s fine to say generally there is a correlation between ‘class’ and financial status, and how you are presented. But I don’t think it’s anywhere near as clear cut as OP is making out, especially since the middle classes really don’t have that much more money than the working classes anymore and that gap is closing. Also because it’s easier to create wealth and move from group to group.

I really don’t!
What you are saying is that you are judging that people cannot afford to live in your area from either their personal appearance - clothes, hair, ethnicity perhaps and/or their accent.
Whichever it is, you’re wrong and being a judgemental twerp.

We all know it’s going to be tattooed men with their shirts off beer bellies a splif on the go chugging fosters cans shouting at Hayden, Zayden, kayden and little Porsche to behave.

Mums going to be all false nails and false lashes maybe animal print outfit with her bottle of lambrini on the phone to her mate Becky.

Those are the people op is saying visit her area.

Though that description sounds like skeggy 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ not very rich tbh.

I genuinely don’t know what she’s referring to. How can you tell on a glance that someone either has or has not got a certain income?

I have learnt something today - I had no idea what a bascule bridge is, but I JFGI. Next time I see one, I will casually use the word.

You cant but how somebody presents themselves generally, as a sweeping very blunt rule, correlates with ‘class’.

For example do you think somebody with neck, face and knuckle tattoos are more or less likely to be public schoolboys than a man with no tattoos at all?

PS - I most of my family have some tattoos before anyone starts.

Ibetthatyoulookgoodon · 26/05/2026 14:19

coulditbeme2323 · 26/05/2026 09:39

The locals don't act like it, people come to visit who couldn't afford to live here and the behavior stinks.

How do you know what they could afford?

I have tattoos as do my family members. I also earn enough that I suspect I could buy a home in OPs tinpot town.
What she is saying is that she is looking at people and judging them hard as mot having the money she does.
Unpleasant all round.
