AIBU to resent the mess and antisocial behaviour from bank holiday visitors?

I know I am going to get flamed for this thread, but I have had enough.

I live in a beautiful area, with a lot of tourism, and as such on good weather bank holiday weekends it becomes packed with people from outside of town. No problem with that, I knew when we were buying it was a popular place, and it's good for local business's.

But with it comes rubbish, mess and anti social behavior;

Does anybody else have to put up with this?

Ahh this is why you haven't talked any sense throughout your thread.

I get it now, you think it's against the rules...

i don't agree with you about the class of people though - that's just snobbery!

It's not snobbery, it's actual stupidity.

The OP is basically saying that money makes people decent.

So if a murderer or rapist got out of prison, bought a lottery ticket and won £10 million, that'd automatically make them a better person.

We see this daily not just on bank holidays. We live near the NC500 and the behaviour of some is outrageous. So far this year we’ve seen numerous people empty their camper van toilets in the loch, have had motorhomes try and “wild camp” at the gates to our drive (including setting up tables/chairs/BBQ), “wild camp” in passing places leaving their rubbish behind, have bonfires on the banks of the loch leaving disposable BBQ’s behind as well as their drink bottles… the list is endless. Don’t get me started on parking in carparks and panicking when the barriers are closed at night. Yes some support local businesses but more often than not they’ll stock up from one of the big supermarkets and leave their shit behind them, we found two discarded tents last week along with their rubbish from the weekend. Mountain rescue have been busy with idiots climbing in trainers or sandals the last few days and being totally unprepared for the conditions at the tops of the summits. Another issue we’ve had is people with those fucking bully dogs on the loch shore, it’s as if the rules don’t apply here and they let these things run free without muzzles, four times this week already we’ve asked them to move on or muzzle them. Twice these requests were met with astonishment because “but there’s no no-one around”, well I’m around, so either muzzle them or I’m calling the police. Wankers.

Edited to add don’t get me started on those tent box things folk have on the roof of their cars and think they can park up anywhere to “wild camp”. Half of them haven’t even heard of The Scottish Outdoor Access Code when you mention it to them.

It's a real shame the OP has started a really useful thread about litter and antisocial behaviour and then immediately sidelined it by making it goady about class/income.

I agree. Selfish people come in all socio-economic groups.

But the council /gov should be able to provide extra bins etc for a couple of days a year.
our council have removed all lay-by bins to stop people dumping stuff, which has worked -but they could also stick a few more bins out

Our council put lots of extra bins in busy park locations over sping/summer snd people still leave mess or don't even bother bagging up their rubbish. I find it so frustrating and cant understand the mentality of people who willingly leave litter around.

Feis123 · 26/05/2026 11:04

Eh? You will be flamed for other people being swines?

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 26/05/2026 11:10

I worked in retail and hospitality for years. There is no correlation between income / wealth and how considerate someone is.

My parents lived in a place like that . On hot days we didn’t usually go to the centre or the beach but we got to enjoy its beauty all year round. I remember it as really really busy, queues for ice cream etc but not really so much for litter. tCount your blessings OP.

Me too. It is a bloody nightmare.

People chuck their rubbish everywhere, including dirty nappies! Every year there are fires on the moors from disposable bloody bbqs.

We also get selfish parking, yelling, booming music, etc.

I understand its their holiday and im glad they enjoy coming here, and that's great, the local economy needs it but is a little consideration re noise and parking really too much to ask?

Is it too much to ask to not chuck rubbish all over the place?

Is it too much to ask to not leave bbqs that end up starting fires?

I dont get it. They come here because its beautiful and they leave it looking like shit.

Is that what they want to see? Is that where they want to holiday? In a noisy village with rubbish everywhere, booming music, roads blocked with cars, dirty nappies in fields and fire engines on the moors?

Imagine sharing those holiday snaps!

No, its not everyone, of course its not. But its enough people for us to be left clearing up a load of shit every fucking time.

Exactly this. Except that the whole conversation gets reduced to peoples class or income purely because the OP blamed the visitors 🙄

FelicityShagsWell · 26/05/2026 11:17

Why are people using Covid as an excuse for this? People like this would have had this mindset in 2019 and before.

The locals don't act like it, people come to visit who couldn't afford to live here and the behavior stinks.

As others have said, your original post had a point - areas that attract large numbers of people can attract significant anti-social behaviour, which is a massive pain for people who live there.

However, you deserve to get flamed for this. I live in an increasingly busy touristy area, and I can assure you that (a) some locals absolutely do act poorly, both where they live and where they go to on 'holiday', and (b) being wealthy doesn't exempt you from being an arsehole, or demonstrating antisocial behaviors.

I've actually challenged antisocial behaviour here (examples include letting dogs chase my livestock, hanging poo bags in trees) and been told "I'm local, I can do what I want." You might believe it isn't locals because there's less of it in winter, but some of that is because those locals only come out in the good weather too, and it's more noticeable where there's a lot of it.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 26/05/2026 11:19

YANBU, I also live in a popular tourist area. However, I find that the local groups of youngsters that meet up on the beach are also the ones who leave it in an absolute tip. It's not just the holidaymakers.

Yep,

I had to stop a bunch of Londoners from unaliving themselves yesterday as they tried to take the chain off the bascule bridge and cross it when it was about to open!!!!

When I stopped them the woman looked at me like dirt on her shoe. I await the Tripadvisor review about ‘unfriendly locals’ 😂😂

Surely you can’t mean that only people who can afford to live in your village are capable of, or should be expected to, respect your environment?

Pretty sure that in the days before I could afford a nice house in a nice place I used not to play loud music and leave disposable barbecues in farmers’ fields.

Well if there’s no where to put it and you have kids, coats, buckets and spades to carry it’s not that easy

Well you carried it on to the beach no problem, so carry it off again!

You said "the whole conversation gets reduced to peoples class or income purely because the OP blamed the visitors"

If you hadn't missed the fact the OP stated that those responsible for the litter and antisocial behaviour 'couldn't afford to live there', then you'd know it wasn't just because she 'blamed the visitors'.

Take a rubbish bag with you, and take your rubbish home. There’s absolutely no excuse not to.
