Effing noisy neighbours

I don't actually care if I am being unreasonable. Long story short, neighbours moved in at the backend of 2023. Then spent 4 months to extend the back of their house to include one of the current ubiquitous grey internal kitchen/ living spaces (yawn). Problem is that the space they created is so cavernous that we can hear everything when the concertina doors are fully open. I've been party to some interesting convos, I can tell you.

DH has now installed a 'sound system' outside on our patio. Mostly to drown out the inane chatter and kids' screaming etc. Good for us as we get to play a lot of great stuff going back (e.g today I played Mogwai, Daft Punk, Blondie and so on). But in the back of my mind I can't get the Terrifier movies out of my head 😹 I am sure there are quite a few of us around with a dark humour streak.

You’re not their neighbour are you?! Talking in your cavernous grey kitchen?!😁

😂

Most certainly not.

Wouldn’t bother me. You sound jealous of their extension. You’ve invested a lot of time nosing in and earwigging. Tell you what, you swap with me. We have “CUNT” shouted in the street. “You’re a fucking piece of shit” oh and “you’ve nevva been a muvva to meeee” then the police. What I wouldn’t give to be disturbed by neighbours in a nice area living normal lives.

Bloody hell that sounds like something in an episode of Eastenders. Just awful. Poor you!

Matsukaze · 25/05/2026 20:18

Never understand the point of people posting in AIBU when they realise they probably are being unreasonable but don't care anyway. But maybe that makes me unreasonable.

Shelleyblueeyes · 25/05/2026 20:49

Jaffapedigree · 25/05/2026 16:42

Or out the front,on the street, like mine are doing now.

Classy.

GallusQuine · 25/05/2026 16:56

You have no idea how echoey this space is that they created.

What about planting some trees?
I have to agree with some others on here - you are actually coming across as the nuisance neighbour yourself.

Jaffapedigree · 25/05/2026 20:58

Yup, and previous experience tells me that they'll be violent if I confront them (been physically threatened by them before now, police called, etc. Didn't stop the behaviour).

grumpygrape · 25/05/2026 20:59

GallusQuine · 25/05/2026 17:10

Hilarious. Once someone complains about their irritating neighbours they are deemed to be 'on the sauce' . Whatever that means. A term that is totally demeaning to women as a whole.

I think 'on the sauce' is gender neutral. What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Please let us know, is grey 'going out' or 'going out out?' 😊

JG24 · 25/05/2026 21:02

People talking is fine...playing music outside is awful.
I have no desire to be forced to listen to other people's music.

That's not good. You shouldn't have to feel kike that in your own neighbourhood.

What can you do ? They are unlikely to change. People who find that sort of behaviour acceptable don't see any problem.

What about your other neighbours how do they feel.about it ?

They're all friends with each other, I'm the newbie (even though I've been here eight years now). Plus, they're council tenants so there's a no hope of them being evicted. The only time their behaviour was curbed was when I took a diary of incidents directly to the housing officer. It was an extensive, detailed diary that had dates, times and the direct effect on me written in it.

Shouldn't have to deal with all that crap.

What's holding you back from moving ?

Job, mortgage, cost of property now. I've got 16 years to retirement (can't afford early retirement), 14 years left on the mortgage. Once I've retired, I'm looking to move somewhere cheaper and with less neighbours! Parts of Scotland look appealing.

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 25/05/2026 21:59

I really don't understand these posts. If you don't like other people and can't tolerate norman human behaviour, why live next door to them? You're expecting them to whisper in their own house, then vindictively playing music loudly. It's mad.

Jaffapedigree · 25/05/2026 22:01

This particular neighbour has also tried to threaten tradesmen I've had to the house, until one of them, a particularly large fellow, called hus bluff and squared up to him. The little runt scurried back behind his door when my tradesmen didn't back down!

Vivienne1000 · 25/05/2026 22:05

Someone suggested you live in Aberdeen?
Therefore they won’t be opening their doors very often? And please do tell us what colour your kitchen is….

That's a flipping long time to have to live next to this lot.

Like you say they're not going anywhere if I was stuck with them I would really consider my options and see what might be doable.
Good luck.

Was that a response to me?

In answer to why I chose to live here; it was a very cheap house, and my last chance really, considering my age, to get a foot on the property ladder. Plus, even though I visited the house quite a few times at different times of the day to check out the neighbourhood, it was always quiet because we bought in winter.

Then my partner and I split up and it was either buy him out or sell, and buying him out made more sense at the time.

Trust me, I'd love to win the lottery and buy somewhere far away from anyone else, but it isn't happening.

Most noise isn't a problem, but nightclub volume drum and bass for hours during the day isn't fun or a normal level of suburban nouse.

I can't leave my job because the pension is too good and anywhere else in the area is too expensive now. I'm fifty one, been in this job just over a year, and it's my only pension. I have to stay in it.

One set of neighbours are dreadful-the family are her,him and their 2 adult dds,3 cats and 2 dogs

They are council and we own (context-im not a snob at all)

They think they own the street (they think we rent so we get 'im telling your landlord to throw you ouuuttt!')

They have 2 dogs, one Is fine but the other is a yappy small breed

It yaps at everything-they haven't bothered to train it and seem to think that yelling at it/smacking it/ignoring it will stop it barking non stop

It comes into our garden (we've tried everything to keep it out as they dont bother) and shits everywhere

God knows what they've called it but in their accent it sounds like they are yelling 'rape!rape!stop it rape!' every 5 minutes

Sling in 'nothing compares 2 u' or 'it wasnt me' on full blast for 12 hours a day with them screaming at each other over the top of the music and what sounds like them slinging plates and mugs at each other

Then she'll get it in her head that we've done something (we havent) and she'll start threatening us over the hedge (last time it was for putting my washing out and before that, because i was at home and not at work as i was off sick-shes never worked a day in her life-im not benefit bashing,we need a system to catch people during hard times but shes proud of it 'working people are fucking mugs!' apparently)

He'll come home,(they are comitting benefit fraud as he doesnt technically live there) we're forgotten and she'll start on him-dog still barking, them still yelling 'rape!' at it,plates and mugs being slung at each other, him screaming 'all he does is work then come home to do everything you lazy cow!',she'll scream back at him and music still going full blast

Rinse and repeat every single day

The year after they set their house on fire was bliss-it was so quiet but they moved back once the house was rebuilt

The other side are lovely

My neighbour has a sound system in his garden he treats everyone living around him to his taste in music whenever the weather is nice. He thinks he’s so cool. I think he’s a selfish twat.

wherearethesnacks · 25/05/2026 22:47

You are the nightmare neighbour for playing music in your garden.

Why don’t you report them for benefit fraud? And steal their dog and take it to a shelter.

SummertoAutumntoWinter · 25/05/2026 23:37

My neighbour is watched the F1 from their garden last night - volume up! I knew someone Italian had won when I could clearly heard the national anthem at 11.15pm! Selfish!
