Daughter broke neighbours bike

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:00

Basically as it says. Brand new bike which for some reason she jumped on when walking passed. No idea what she was thinking but it’s snapped something and seems can’t be fixed. I wasn’t aware until this morning when another neighbour mentioned it and gave me recommendations for where to go for a replacement.

Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids. I have spoke to my daughter but she can’t explain why she did it . It’s totally out of character. AIBU not to buy a new bike?

OP posts:

Why are pps saying OP is BU to do a reverse? Totally common and acceptable as has been cleared up by HQ.

sorry to hear about the bike. If you were nearby I’d give you one of the DC’s old ones. But also agree it’s likely something that can be fixed really easily. Likely as it’s the front wheel it’s the brake. If back
wheel could be gears but sounds like that’s fine. Now you know to avoid that family

Oh just realised it’s a reverse.

I don't know why people keep giving advice when it's revealed as a reverse. I hate them and think the o.p instantly loses all credibility.

Sorry to quote you, just using it as a jumping off point

Everyone hates a reverse. Just post the situation.

Especially on this situation where it would have been clear cut anyway

ColdAsAWitches · 23/05/2026 22:06

They don't have to. Why should they? It's not their fault it was damaged.

But it’s not fit for purpose if a child “broke it” within a few weeks?

Because in a reverse

The o.p doesn't have all the facts and feelings that the person they are pretending to be has (not saying relevant here, just in general)

Therefore they write the other party as a one dimensional villan so everyone rages at them and they then use it as evidence they are right

And also people don't like to made to be fools

RumPidgeon · 23/05/2026 22:15

What kind of feral child have you got that would „jump“ on another bike when walking past? Your own attitude speaks volumes..

I‘m sure neighbours have seen what happened. You should replace the bike and make your child apologise. How awful for the poor person it happened to.

ClayPotaLot · 23/05/2026 22:17

I was going to say that a brand new bike that breaks when a child rides it needs returning for a replacement as clearly not of a suitable quality. But now I see it’s a reverse so YABVU for posting a reverse.

Try taking it back for a replacement (if the stumping was not more than the bike would receive in normal use) or take the parents to small claims court as they clearly weren’t supervising their dc sufficiently so are legally responsible for damage he causes.

How long have you had it? Definitely take it to a store, this is from their site.

By deliberately jumping up and down on it. This isn't a defect, it's deliberate damage. It's not on Argos to replace it, it's on the other parents.

previouslyknownas · 23/05/2026 22:24

Just another useless parent bringing up the next generation of useless kids

pay for the damage
maybe then you might start parenting your kid

Feis123 · 23/05/2026 22:26

Obviously, you have to replace it and secondly, you need a psychological assessment of your child - this is not normal what she did.

BCBird · 23/05/2026 22:26

Thank you for the explanation marthathebest

JulieJo · 23/05/2026 22:36

Could you take it to a Repair cafe to see if they can fix it?

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 23/05/2026 22:39

So many people not reading the full thread...
Why post if you haven't read it?

Copperoliverbear · 23/05/2026 22:41

Buy a new bike

handsdownthebest · 23/05/2026 22:41

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 21:54

The bike was Argos so taking back there would be pointless. But we do have a local bike shop

I am sorry this has happened to your son’s bike.
Please go to your local bike shop and explain what has happened. If they can fix it they will. it might not be an expensive fix.
I’m a cyclist and would be gutted if somebody damaged my bike.
Also, put a post on your local FP asking for local bike mechanics. They can sometimes be more helpful than bike shops.

ACynicalDad · 23/05/2026 22:44

I strongly recommend secondhand Isla bikes for Kids most of the time we’ve sold them for only 10 or 20 quid less than we paid for them because they’re really good.

jdb9803 · 23/05/2026 20:06

or rage bait!!!!!

Got to be.
No one in their right mind would be that thick stupid to suggest it's just "kids being kids" when that "kid" not only went on someone else property without permission but also damaged it, yet still think it's not their responsibility to pay for the item to be fixed.

dailyconniptions · 23/05/2026 22:54

Annoying reverse. It's spelt pasT. Not passED.

SleepsAThingOfThePast · 23/05/2026 22:56

If one of my kids did that I'd be offering to replace it ! I have in the past with a Nintendo switch that my dc played and dropped although accidentally but still replaced it

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 23/05/2026 23:03

Ahh Just seen its a reverse. I was about to tell you you were being a knob!
Absolutely they should replace, I would if my child did this.
I hope you get it sorted.

dontletmedownbruce · 23/05/2026 23:06

Seems very unreasonable to buy a brand-new replacement. You should certainly pay for it to be repaired.

ToSayYouHaveNoChoiceIsAFailureOfImagination · 23/05/2026 23:15

Where do you live OP, my kid fancies doing a tap dance on a car. You don't mind if she uses yours do you? It's just kids being kids

I’m sorry, but your daughter, for what ever reason jumped on a neighbours bike, damaged it and you think they’re out of order for asking for a replacement.

I wouldn’t have waited for the request I’d have gone round pronto to pay for it.

There would also be consequences for her stupidity. If you let her get away with it she’ll assume she can do it again.

Nairsmellsbad · 23/05/2026 23:29

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:18

oh my! I didn’t expect such a strong response! @ThisSunnyBea got it. It was my child’s bike and that’s the response I got from the parents. Financially we’re struggling and I wondered if that made me over sensitive hence the reverse.

I am gutted tbh. I saved for ages for it and the kids are out in their bikes all day long here so that’s her left out. How he did it don’t know. He came over to say sorry which made me more mad 😡

The reverse and the fact that your child seems to have changed sex makes me think you are BU. Otherwise, just go to a bike shop and see what a repair will cost
