Daughter broke neighbours bike

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:00

Basically as it says. Brand new bike which for some reason she jumped on when walking passed. No idea what she was thinking but it’s snapped something and seems can’t be fixed. I wasn’t aware until this morning when another neighbour mentioned it and gave me recommendations for where to go for a replacement.

Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids. I have spoke to my daughter but she can’t explain why she did it . It’s totally out of character. AIBU not to buy a new bike?

That'll teach me to read all the ops posts before replying 🤦🤣

Have you taken it to a bike repair shop @Fortheloveofpizza? Preferably an independent one rather than halfords, unless the frame is snapped/broken it can absolutely be fixed, my kids crank fell off on the bmx track today and someone who knew what they were doing had it sorted in 5 minutes! All the other bits an pieces are replaceable and generally pretty affordable (like under £20 for generic parts)

oh my! I didn’t expect such a strong response! @ThisSunnyBea got it. It was my child’s bike and that’s the response I got from the parents. Financially we’re struggling and I wondered if that made me over sensitive hence the reverse.

I am gutted tbh. I saved for ages for it and the kids are out in their bikes all day long here so that’s her left out. How he did it don’t know. He came over to say sorry which made me more mad 😡

Everyone hates a reverse. Just post the situation.

Cyclebabble · 23/05/2026 21:34

Hi OP I am a keen cyclist. I am sorry your child's bike got damaged. It is however unlikely that it is damaged beyond repair if the front wheel is just not moving. A local bike shop should be able to have a look or if you have local cycle co-op, they will do it for free worth a google and an email. Also locally if you have a shed- a mental health group for people retired (mostly but not exclusively men), then looking at this kind of thing for free is right up their street. Good luck all is not lost. Of course if there are costs, I do think it is for the other kid's parents to fork out. Accidents happen, yes they do, but we are all accountable for our children.

Laura95167 · 23/05/2026 21:35

Personally I wouldnt need to be asked to replace it because id have offered.

How old is DD?

Why are you so blaise about her inability to explain jumping on another child's bike with enough force to break it? Where are the consequences?

Kids being kids would be like if she used the bike and accidently crashed it. Not deliberately jumped on it and broke it and didnt tell you.

I think its embarrassing that you dont immediately feel responsible for her deliberate and bad behaviour.

YABU

edit

Just seen this is a reverse.

Again I could understand if another child used the bike and crashed it and broke it, being understanding and saying well its an accident.

If your child deliberately breaks something belonging to someone else should be held accountable by their parents and repair or replace it

ToadRage · 23/05/2026 21:36

I am gobsmacked you think you should not replace the bike. It is someone else's property that was broken by your daughters carelessness so you definitely should replace/repair the bike, apologise profusely and make daughter apologise as well. If it was my daughter, I would also punish her in some way for being careless with something that doesn't belong to her.

StephensLass1977 · 23/05/2026 21:38

You are a nightmare neighbour. You deserve to have the police called on you. Yes, you replace it! My goodness, if I'd done that as a kid, I'd be marched round to apologise, got absolutely bollocked, and my parents would buy a new one immediately, which I'd pay for in some way (fewer presents, etc).

Proper parents and not the entitled muck you get all too often nowadays.

ClairDeLaLune · 23/05/2026 21:39

Are you actually being serious? Of course you should replace it. What do you think should happen, that the neighbour should be out of pocket? How is that fair? Jeez no wonder your kid has no respect for someone else’s property with a parent like you.

YourWildAmberSloth · 23/05/2026 21:41

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 21:27

Thanks all. I honestly don’t know what’s broke. The front wheel is seized and won’t move when he peddles. When I walk it on back wheel it’s fine so seems it’s front. Wheel looks fine, can’t see anything bent etc.
It was a handy man that looked at it as I don’t think it would be worth paying a proper repairer. The bike was £140 . I’ll check and see what a repair would cost at a bike shop

Something similar happened with my son's bike years ago - one minute it was fine and then suddenly the front wheel seemed to be locked in place, apparently it was something to do with the brake but was fixed in minutes (literally 5 minutes) and for free at my local bike shop. Your neighbours are dicks, their child would not get the chance to touch any of my child's toys again.

But YABU for doing a reverse!

CaesarAugusta · 23/05/2026 21:43

Deleted having discovered it's a tedious reverse.

Witchonenowbob · 23/05/2026 21:44

Bloody reverse!! YABU!

Pearlmaster500 · 23/05/2026 21:46

This post just proves how many of us don’t read the full thread before leaving comments 😂

BCBird · 23/05/2026 21:46

Can't believe you think this is kids being kids. Evrn if your daughter and neighbour don't get on this is appalling behaviour

BCBird · 23/05/2026 21:48

No idea what people mean by a reverse Sad

Depending where you got it from, it might be worth taking it back to where you bought it and asking their advice about the damage? Might help you figure out if it can be repaired.

alternatively a lot of bike shops will take a look for free and quote you for the repair, if it’s repairable?

ParmaVioletTea · 23/05/2026 21:52

Is this a reverse?

Because otherwise I can’t imagine being such a low-life that you think you’re being reasonable not replacing a brand new bicycle broken by your daughter’s unhinged behaviour.

i thought I’d read it all on here, but this is bare-faced scum-baggery.

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 21:54

The bike was Argos so taking back there would be pointless. But we do have a local bike shop

OP posts:
Littlestmoo · 23/05/2026 21:54

It’s likely just the front brakes locked on, it’ll be a simple adjustment if that’s the case, take it to someone that knows bikes. 👍🏻

ParmaVioletTea · 23/05/2026 21:55

Ahhh yes, a reverse!

So now you know that all of us think your neighbour is a bare-faced scumbag.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 23/05/2026 21:58

It sounds like the wheel has buckled, a new wheel should fix it. Take it to a repair shop, there is likely a community one, put a shout out on facebook or something.

Imthefunfriend · 23/05/2026 21:58

You got it from argos, totally go for the replacement then! Just take it back and say they have to repair or replace it. Go in person with the bike. They take back stuff all the time.

BCBird · 23/05/2026 21:48

No idea what people mean by a reverse Sad

It's where someone starts a thread from the opposite pov. So in this case pretending to be the mother of the bike breaker instead of the truth as the bike owner. Hope that makes sense

It wasn't op child, this is a reverse

You wouldn't be this chill if a child broke your belongings. So easy to state in this situation that you would be just fine!

Of course you replace whatever damage your child is responsible for

They don't have to. Why should they? It's not their fault it was damaged.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 23/05/2026 22:08

Of course you should replace the bike. Make your daughter do chores to pay you back. Why would you think that the other child should miss out on a bike.
